Who posited that democracy was the final step in the evolution of governance? It seems, rather, to be an introductory step. It should be teaching cultures the basics does/don'ts of how to run an entity, so that they can evolve into a more progressive form.
What does this mean? The US hasn't employed true democracy on a national or state level in any meaningful way pretty much ever (statewide propositions, perhaps, being the biggest exception), though to be sure, particular aspects of our system have become more democratic in nature.

Democracy is a process, a governmental "mean" by which some "end" is upheld or pursued. In the US, that end was and theoretically still is liberty. For governmental purposes, everything that we in the US theoretically value stems from that end - liberty - and not the mean - democracy - that we employ (sort of) to safeguard it.

I think the truly salient question is: Is liberty the best end for government?

Looked like a generalization to me! Next time, you might want to try context.

I take Richmond, with the intent to slowly work my way toward Piccadilly. For now, though, I'll be at the pub.

That's at least how I feel about it...

There's a big difference between understanding human feelings and recognizing that they carry about zero weight in discourse.

Technically, it's illegal to lie to Congress. Don't know if this qualifies as "high crimes and misdemeanors." The AG will probably be out for it before too long.

Stupid is as stupid does. I'm sure everyone posting here is perfectly delightful in real life (perhaps a little young in some cases). However, it doesn't change the fact that everyone is responsible for his or her assertions. Why should moronic posts be tolerated by long-standing members of the boards? How else are we to "learn" them?

(The sad thing is it took me more than a second to realize my mistake when you pointed it out.)

Ahem... America certainly would be better served through worshipping the Almighty Diety, a.k.a. Richard White. Join now and lose ten pounds in the first two weeks, guaranteed! He's deilicious.

Yes. The buck stops with them. They were the ones elected, so they are the ones who are answerable.

Yes - glutting yourself on the body and blood of a diety can only result in heartburn, a hangover, and, if taken to extremes, love handles. The first two of these effects can at least be forstalled somewhat if you throw a good chutney in the mix. And probably lots of water and an Advil before bed.

Hey Synergy, did I ever get my bonus points for calling the inspiration for the title? 'Cause, like, I kinda need them right now, dig?

I actually don't think President Bush has ever (yet) mispronounced "strategy"; it was Will Ferrell impersonating George Bush who pronounced it "strategery."

I actually don't think there's ever been a turn-based MMORPG. Turn-based "ORPGs", on the other hand, have been more successful, but they tend to be more strategy-oriented, like multiplayer Civ, Risk, or other such games.

Whatever the true reason was for the war, the reality is that it was sold to Congress and the American public largely on false pretenses, lubricated by the climate of fear generated by September 11th. There was never any truly "just" rationale for this "intervention," however.

I'm currently a 2L in law school focusing on tax law, and looking for summer work. The dreams for the future, they be uncertain, though they definitely involve living in a cheaper real estate market.

The title was inspired by Boost Mobile, possibly via the relevant ATHF episode.

Those classics profs sure are a special lot. Frequently brilliant, yes, but definitely special.

Did you use Wheelock's Latin, Kel? One of my Latin profs' words still ring in my head: "The road to Hell is paved with bad translations of sententiae antiquae!" He would frequently wear a black leather vest to class, and the license plate on his Bronco sported "VARRO 1".

"Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him;
The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interréd with their bones,
So let it be with Caesar…. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answered it….
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest,
(For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all; all honourable men)
Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral….
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man….
He hath brought many captives home to Rome,
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Lupercal
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then to mourn for him?
O judgement! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason…. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
And I must pause till it come back to me."
