I'm pretty certain Jeff and Toshiba Games would have reached a licensing agreement. Despite the lower price tag, Jeff gets market exposure he otherwise wouldn't. It's somewhat analogous to a U.S. pharmaceutical company marketing its brand product in other countries for vastly lower prices; sure, they're taking a price hit, but that's medication they're selling that they otherwise wouldn't be. quote:Because particular resources will always be limited should systems remain the way they are, i.e., the ammount of family homes in desirable school districts, or spaces at Ivy League (or even public) universities, increases in family incomes through the second parent going to work, instead of being used to improve the family safety net or be used for the "good things" in life, are thrown into the bidding war for these "vital" resources. The result then is the inflation in the housing market and the cost of university tuition (which has definitely outstripped inflation). At the same time, the two-income family has increased its exposure to risk of financial ruin, as it's almost twice as likely that one of the wage earners may lose his or her job. If that family is relying on both incomes to provide for basic needs, i.e. housing, health insurance, car payments, etc., the chance that they will fall into debt and other financial trouble increases. In short, if every family has two incomes, then all that happens is prices will increase to match, no one has an edge, and the likelihood of financial calamity increases, be it from job loss, medical emergency, divorce, etc. I'm not really doing it justice, but I think the takeaway point is: live well below your means if at all possible. Hard to do though, when you're trying to provide the best for your children, which is what any good parent wants. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

quote:It's just been a bit of fun and absurdity, focusing on crazy assertions and word play. Diverting, if you will. I don't know that it ever produced many cramps from laughter; I don't know that that was ever the point. Just amusement. Surely, Alec, you aren't so serious and snobby as to declare yourself above that? There are probably thousands of posts at Desp that would belie such an assertion. I remember once when SoT characterized Desperance as a "drip tray," and there was some rankling on your (or maybe it was Djur's...) part about the label. Well, this has been our drip tray, and many of us have enjoyed it. [ Monday, June 18, 2007 05:32: Message edited by: Drew ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Arms, and the man I sing, who, forc'd by fate, And haughty Juno's unrelenting hate, Expell'd and exil'd, left the Trojan shore. Long labors, both by sea and land, he bore, And in the doubtful war, before he won The Latian realm, and built the destin'd town; His banish'd gods restor'd to rites divine, And settled sure succession in his line, From whence the race of Alban fathers come, And the long glories of majestic Rome. O Muse! the causes and the crimes relate; What goddess was provok'd, and whence her hate; For what offense the Queen of Heav'n began To persecute so brave, so just a man; Involv'd his anxious life in endless cares, Expos'd to wants, and hurried into wars! Can heav'nly minds such high resentment show, Or exercise their spite in human woe? Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I think his complaint was that IE isn't updated on his Mac anymore. Also, Apple hasn't exactly been freehanded with Safari updates for those of us who are unwilling to shell out $129 for the latest version of OSX. (Also, I believe that there are some very serious security exploits already located in WinSafari. Check out CNET for details.) I just finished reading Un Lun Dun by China Mieville, which was his (I think quite successful) attempt at writing a children's book. Nowhere near as dark as his other works (which I've mentioned before) that take place in a steampunk setting, but just as imaginative, if not moreso. I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of J.K. Rowling or Lewis Carroll. On a less fun but more nonfictional note, I just finished reading Maxed Out (which there's a movie about) and The Two-Income Trap, both mostly to do with the nightmare of subprime credit availability and its negative externalities. Definitely worth a read for you younger folks if you've even considered purchasing something on a credit card that you can't pay off immediately, and also worthwhile to our older members looking to purchase a home. Craziness! [ Friday, June 15, 2007 05:47: Message edited by: Drew ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I think the point of posting in those forums would be made further moot by the fact that (I believe) Jeff will no longer be offering those games for sale at all. So you would be hosting forums for games that no longer are available. Furthermore, everyone knows that all true followers of His Whiteness reside here, and though they take our foral home, they cannot crush us! Pan lever. Obviously, Richard White is angry that his shrine is being threatened, and is making his displeasure known. The obvious solution: allow the forum to remain intact. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

quote:Unless someone is living completely "off the grid," they will have to have pay stubs from income from labor; brokerage accounts for keeping track of earnings on the market, and sales of property are required by law to be recorded. At the very least, it's no worse than the current system, with the added benefit that no matter what, they wouldn't be able to avoid all taxes, due to the national sales tax. I'm not doing this justice - it's been a while since I read the book - but I'm certain that the concept is workable in real life. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Because spending equals income minus savings. Income is easily trackable through pay stubs, interest statements, and realization events; savings are trackable by similar receipts for deposits, etc. It sounds complicated, but trust me: it is much simpler than the current U.S. tax system. A national sales tax is workable if you make it progressive; you can accomplish this either by making particular staples or commodities exempt; alternately, you could create a tax rebate on, say, the first $20,000 of expenses (this could be adjusted) which would be pretty simple to impliment. In addition, you could also impliment a supplemental tax that kicks in for individuals spending, say, $200K or more annually. I'm not doing it justice though; it's all much better explained in a book called Fair Not Flat by Edward Cafferty, which I thought was better than "The Fair Tax."
