Well, I'd already registered A2 when I joined, perhaps A3 as well. I kind of registered independent of the forums... they neither encouraged nor discouraged me.

So I didn't vote.

Welcome, SummerCatch073. Leave your sanity at the door, and I'm curious as to who suggested a "Hello" topic.

"Oldbie" is completely relative. However, it helps to have had nebulous origins. I can't even remember when I really started posting in earnest, and I think I fall into the category of "oldbie". Grammar, spelling, and common courtesy also help, of course...

Avernum 2 - 8.54 (9.7/5.5) in General

I'll top that and give it a 9.5. I don't care if that makes me a bad person, but A2 was the only Avernum that I ever managed to completely play through more than once... and I enjoyed each time as much as the last. It's just awesome, really...

Ah, for the days when Vahnatai were more than walking plot accelerators... the token appearances before the ultimate confrontation in A3 just weren't any good.

Bind Foe for the win!

His post rate kind of gives that away, though.

Ed, I second Drakefyre's comments. Fewer insults, and fewer unnecessary posts will do you a world of good in being welcomed.

Do not question the Imbans... please. They might explain.

Welcome back, JadeWolf. Hopefully you can help make the boards a slightly less stupid place right now (raising the mean won't take much at the moment).

Character Choices in Avernum 4

Yes, it's really a shame. The color-swapped character models were a very bad idea, in my opinion. I get the feeling that all of you would've thrown the beta against a wall (there were even worse choices for characters, and they were well-hidden).

But life goes on...

Well, it's too late to undo it, but you can still finish the game. It may just be a little tougher in a few spots.

For the next time you go through, go talk to Houghton first. Then you'll get the Almaria rescue quest, and after that you'll be sent after the crystal box.

I could've sworn that Jeff had fixed those barriers...

I'm stunned and appalled that anyone could confuse me for Imban. I have never been, and will never be Imban. Please, let's not start that wonderful little bandwagon again...

I have to kind of agree with TM's response to "The standards seem a lot higher for BoA scenarios"... there's just nothing to compare to, unless you've got an epic-sized scenario like Bahss. It's been said so many times before, BoE is better and BoA will never be that good... and as a result of that talk, it never will be. So we're left with a few paltry offerings to compare ourselves to (and honestly, it's just not difficult to outdo some of the current crop... I include DoK in this assessment).

However, whenever BoA and BoE are thrust into the same room and compared, I disagree with TM. No matter what BoA designers do, no matter how impressive the effort is, no matter how high of a CSR score it gets, oldbies will just say "Oh, there's no way that's better than (insert BoE scenario title here)". Or even better, "Give up now and go back to BoE... don't waste your time on a dying system"

EDIT: Typo.

No, they're the commercials with such wonderfully interesting quips as "It's like cheese you can listen to outside!"

Somebody must've put a chimp in charge of PSP marketing. They achieved notoriety, that's for sure... but at the expense of their dignity. I agree that the commercials are clinically stupid.

I, too await the release of details before I pass judgement. I can't even begin to think of why Ash would be banned...

(Though if I had to guess, it'd be all the comments about BoA being dead)

EDIT: The sig? That's it?!

EDIT2: I'm looking at Ash's profile, and I don't see BANNED anywhere... and that should've overridden his custom title. So, I'm just kind of confused now.

As for excitement about HP, eh... I'm not enough of a fan of the movies to really care that much. The books were better.

No, the entrance is just outside of the main tower. Look for a blank spot on the map with a rune in front of it.

(If the other maps were still there, this post would've been more helpful.)

Major spoilers here, but I think that's a bit of a given.

Well, if you disabled the device, I think you're supposed to go back and get the vahnatai.

And you only open those locked doors once you've gotten a key from defeating Rentar Ihrno. You did defeat her, right?

AOL isn't really that good, try Norton.

I second the idea that AOL is unpleasant... I really only use it for AIM at this point (yay for university-supplied email!).

However, I also agree with the sentiment that Norton yields ungodly lags. In fact, most virus scans seem to do that for me (yay for having a Mac and not needing that many scans). One scanning program in particular, which was the LiveUpdate part of Norton (also provided by my university... I don't thank them for it), just sat on my desktop racking up time on the "Time Remaining" bar.

It got to 50 hours before I killed it.

And I also fail to see why Ed here thinks he's a virus expert. Wasn't he asking for help with one a while ago?

This reminds me of a discussion I had yesterday, and it is not entirely off-topic. About having a goal in life. that is quite a problem, a goal, I mean. people generally feel two things about a goal, depending on their present situation. With having a goal, this means:

Reached your goalNot reached your goalNow, if we take a person in his fifties, then he will feel in these two ways, in the same order a sabove, about his goal:
He will be depressed because he reached his goal, and can't find anything else to do.He will hate himself and be depressed because he didn't manage to achieve his goal.(Note that this can also occur on earlier ages, but it will start at an age of about 35.)
Is it good to have a goal in life then? or will you be depressed because you feel bored and don't know what to do. As I see it, in all manners, a person could become depressed, no matter what he does. Of course, some people have a normal life, retire, and live happily ever after.

I may be taking this wrong, but I'm sensing that you think it's somewhere between difficult and impossible for a person to have any pride in the life they've lived. Either that, or this went in a circle.
Anybody else read this and get a deep sense of defeatism?
