Yay!

Caravel Games, creators of the grand puzzle game DROD, have offered hosting and a forum for SubTerra. This is a great opportunity for puzzle fans of either game to get to know the other, and trade levels, hints etc.

Also, and with sincerest apologies for the delay, the 2004 Contest level pack is now available.

Speaking of which... does anyone around here still have the Linux version of SubTerra? The installer TAR.GZ would be best (although it can be recreated easily if you have it on your hard drive).
Having no longer access to a Linux machine I cannot presently reproduce it, and I would like to host it once more.

FYI, the levels towards the left are more reflex-oriented, and those to the right are more puzzle-oriented. In PRIME, at least.

It also says that "if nobody downloads your file for 30 days, its deleted automatically."

And, "No files that are not allowed to be shared. (...copyrighted...) Obviously, SubTerra is copyrighted.

And, lowest download-speed priority unless people pay for the download.

The problem is not in file size limits, but in bandwidth limit. That severely limits the amount of people that can access a site (not to mention download anything) per month. Most free sites have limits of up to 100 MB per month, which means that (given that SubTerra is 7 meg) 14 people can download it each month. Which is very few.
Problem? Yes.

Etherlark -> You obviously have a faulty download. You should d/l it again, it's at least a megabyte in size.

Toenail -> As Ash Lael suggests, ST2 has about 40 new objects (and lacks most of ST1's objects). See the relevant thread for details.

I'd be glad to have your assistance in level design. The download from the other thread is still the newest version, and there's some old threads in this forum regarding level design (for instance, some ideas of infrequently-used features - there are a lot of levels with wires & buttons, or with wandering monsters you have to dodge, but there's a lot of puzzle potential in the other objects).

I find it strange that ST2 should not work in XP, though. In what way doesn't it work? Hang/crash/invisible/whatever? Could you look up the error.txt file in your SubTerra\Data folder, and post it here?

...but I've already created 50+ levels for you! If I were in a mean mood, I could ask you to solve Rooms of Confusion (or even Razzle Dazzle).

Seriously though, what is your ST rank?

Ah. Yes. To answer some questions,
SubTerra is coded in Windows using DirectX, but a variation exists using SDL (which is, basically, the Linux port).
There is no particular reason why this wouldn't work on a Mac (except for endianness in the save files, maybe) but the effort of creating a Mac version has always been severely hampered by the fact that I don't have a Mac, nor do I know anyone who does.
So Mac users will have to contend with Virtual PC, that should work. Or run Linux.

Regarding ST2, well, the main problem is its lack of levels. There are about 40-50 of them, I believe (ST1 had 100+ originally, and 400+ now). I was going to release this version as 'final' anyway since it seems unlikely to attract any more levels, but I haven't gotten around to it yet becuase of other projects. Not to mention a fulltime job.

HTH

Stewboy -> I meant to write 'quantity'. But the quality is also good or you wouldn't be among the winners :)
The Creator has been working on BoA stuff afaik, so he didn't have much time for ST.

Gemma -> the truth is that, after designing nearly half the levels of SubTerra PRIME, I've been moving on to some other areas - designing the games Leylines, ZENG, Polymorph, Stresstaurant and ATOTK. So I'm afraid there are very little secret levels from my hand (Eye Queue Too, and Don't Try This At Home come to mind, though)

First of all, thanks to everybody who participated and created one or more levels for our beloved game, SubTerra.
For this contest, as well as any future contests, both levels for SubTerra and SubTerra II are eligible. There are no separate categories.
It took quite some time playing and pondering all the levels. Without further ado, here are the winners.

First Prize:
P.M.Bert with Overflow
Amidst several high quality levels, this one was considered his best because of the simple elegance: it's easy to figure out what to do, but very hard to actually do it right.
This, by the way, is the first SubTerra II level to get an award in the contest.

Second Prize:
Gemma & Lorenzo with Rettangoli
Once again a tough choice between several good levels. Copy/pasting the editor layout and then creating good puzzles out of it is certainly worthy of fame.

Third Prize:
Stewboy with Towers of Doom
If there was a prize for sheer quanity of playable levels, Stewboy would certainly win! This level is his best because it breaks from common linearity patterns, forcing the player to plan ahead.

Runners-up: Zeviz (Replicator Repair) and Omlette (My Cup Runneth Over).

Because of technical reasons, the levelset is not yet available. But it will be in february at the latest, as will some version of SubTerra II.

Well, no. I can't actually search for levels by author, except manually. If you don't recall your level, then you may have forgotten to send it to me in the first place. I don't think I have anything that's not by Stewboy or Gemma, though.

This is the last call for levels for the 2004 level design contest!

Current entrants are Gemma (and Lorenzo!) and Stewboy, both with about ten levels to their name. If anyone else wants to take part in the competition, speak now or forever hold your silence (or at least until next year :) )

just to remind you all that you have a little less than a month left to send in levels for the 2004 level design contest.

If people had trouble getting this to work earlier, they should try it now. I've had to deal with a minor quirk of geocities and stored files, but it's ok now.
