Will there be a Windows SubTerra 2 version? If so, is there any particular release date for it?

I really enjoyed the origional game, because of it's neat gameplay, level editor, and a generally fun atmosphere. I, unfortunately, only have Windows, so I can't play the Linux ST2.

Thanks,
Etherlark

As you can tell by how small this game forum is, you can tell it's not popular like geneforge and avernum. The answer is obviously no.

Wow thats a big surprise. I guess he has a few dedicated followers. I personally didnt see a point to that game, and utterly disliked it. But again, that's just me.

SubTerra 2's native system is Windows. There are no plans to port it to Macintosh, as far as I'm aware.

I feel inclined to say "I told ya so" :P
As for a troll, oh well. Can't say everybody likes me. In fact, I'm sure more people dislike me than like me.

There is a beta version of ST2 out for Windows. It's just a level editor so far, though, so that people can make levels for it. Just go to the 'Another sequel update' topic. I think it should work.

It's not like you haven't done anything to further that, in most of your posts. :P

Ah. Yes. To answer some questions,
SubTerra is coded in Windows using DirectX, but a variation exists using SDL (which is, basically, the Linux port).
There is no particular reason why this wouldn't work on a Mac (except for endianness in the save files, maybe) but the effort of creating a Mac version has always been severely hampered by the fact that I don't have a Mac, nor do I know anyone who does.
So Mac users will have to contend with Virtual PC, that should work. Or run Linux.

Regarding ST2, well, the main problem is its lack of levels. There are about 40-50 of them, I believe (ST1 had 100+ originally, and 400+ now). I was going to release this version as 'final' anyway since it seems unlikely to attract any more levels, but I haven't gotten around to it yet becuase of other projects. Not to mention a fulltime job.

HTH

I'd be happy to make a few hundred extra levels for you, if I could only get ST2 working on my XP system. ;)

Well, if it's only lack of levels that is the problem, I'm sure I will be able to help.
The problem is I've run out of ideas.

I'd be glad to have your assistance in level design. The download from the other thread is still the newest version, and there's some old threads in this forum regarding level design (for instance, some ideas of infrequently-used features - there are a lot of levels with wires & buttons, or with wandering monsters you have to dodge, but there's a lot of puzzle potential in the other objects).

I find it strange that ST2 should not work in XP, though. In what way doesn't it work? Hang/crash/invisible/whatever? Could you look up the error.txt file in your SubTerra\Data folder, and post it here?

I don't have a SubTerra\Data folder, nor a error.txt file. I downloaded the single file subtwo.exe from the 'another sequel update' thread in a few seconds. This is strange because I have a 5kbps dialup connection.

I ran the downloaded executable and it gave me this error:

subtwo.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0536 IP:0168 OP:63 69 74 69 65 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I ran Windows' Program Compatibility Wizard on it. It continued to give me the same error.

I tried it on my actual Windows 98 machine, and it gave me this error:

...\subtwo.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Am I missing a file? I've downloaded the file several times to see if I somehow downloaded it badly. I downloaded it boh times with Mozilla Firefox's internal downloader.

Windows seems to recognize subtwo.exe as a DOS program, and a faulty one.

EDIT: Here's a picture of the window that opens when I try to start the subtwo.exe file.

We all have to admit, Subterra was fun, yes, but a sequel? We can just make levels ourselves and send them to each other without having to buy another version.

But Radiant is thinking of maybe releasing ST1 (and 2 if that happens) as freeware. If he says he's going to do it soon, you can just wait...

SubTerra 2 has different objects.

Etherlark -> You obviously have a faulty download. You should d/l it again, it's at least a megabyte in size.

Toenail -> As Ash Lael suggests, ST2 has about 40 new objects (and lacks most of ST1's objects). See the relevant thread for details.

Thanks Radiant!

I hope, when I try it AGAIN. I can get it this time.

EDIT: Everytime I try to download it. It's immediately complete. Now I don't have a super-fast
connection. And I even try downloading it on IE, and when I do, it just redirects me to your site.

I've re-downloaded it about five times now. Each time it downloads nearly instantly, and gives me the same error.

When I download it with an external download manager called GetRight, it gives me a strange error message about subtwo.exe being a webpage (which it most certainly is not ;) ). I'll post the exact wording soon.

Try going to http://www.liacs.nl/~psimoons/dls/. It's the web directory through which I downloaded my subtwo.exe file (to be exact, the place I downloaded it from was http://www.liacs.nl/~psimoons/dls/subtwo.exe).

Note that subtwo.exe is supposedly 1KB, according to the first link. Maybe the file got corrupted somehow?

By the way, Radiant; if you want somewhere to host ST1, you might try Rapidshere. It's free and has a 10MB file size limit.
