The good point about shareware (i.e. all games found here) is that you can download and play them /before/ paying anything. (of course you need to pay to get the full game, but you'll see that it works long before that). Many games do not 'officially' support XP because microsoft says that XP is not 'officially' compatible with certain older graphics and sound systems. However in practice it works fine 99% of the time. And if it does not, try checking microsoft.com for patches. -------------------- Pieter Simoons, aka Radiant Official Crystal Shard and SubTerra webpage Posts: 798 | Registered: Monday, December 17 2001 08:00 |

Varelse -> We've found out the main reason for slowdown under Linux. Leylines runs in 16-bit mode. Most people run X in 24-bit mode. There you go. So a temporary workaround for you would be to reboot X in 16-bit; we're making a 24-bit version of Leylines for in the future. Shangri-La: Yes; I'll put it online some time this week. The funny thing about PNG is that it's basically the same as GIF (i.e. linear bitmap with Huffman-type compression) only it supports more than 256 colors and has no legal trouble. BMP is actually exactly the same but without the Huffman (and RLE doesn't count). -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Shangri-La -> I believe you originally complained that you couldn't do anything else than BMP, then I told you that BMP was in fact all right. Anyway BMP works fine so I have no real reasons to switch to anything else at the moment. Varelse -> oops. I didn't put a new build on line yet. I'll do that soon, I promise. I'm not usre what a super-l-x is, but I assume you mean window switching? I think in Linux the game is best run on 800x600 mode (i.e. turn hi-res off). We'll give gprof a try though, and thanks for the suggestions. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Actually JPEG may not change the picture in a visible way (that's the whole point) but it will change it anyway. Try subtracting the original pixel values everywhere, and you won't get pure black any more. A graphics convertor? I use kodak photo editor myself. But at jpeg.org you can download the sourcecode to a JPEG decoder, and it also has a program that converts several types of image to one another. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Actually older (i.e. most) versions of MS paint will only work with .BMP files; I believe the chance was introduced in win xp somewhere. But that's beside the point as BMP files are precisely what I need for the leylines graphics. Because GIF lacks color depth and JPEG is not lossless. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Varelse -> We just spent some time working on the Linux port. Probably most of your problems should be fixed by now. However, 1.We can switch virtual terminals here with no problems; probalby the problem is in your system setup. By the way you could run Xwindows twice and run Leylines in one and your other programs in another. 9.We now optimize for pentium-pro but that doesn't make a noticeable difference in speed. -O3 does, a bit. If you have other performance ideas please tell us. I could mail you the makefile if that helps. We've decided that HW surfaces probably aren't worth it. They don't seem to increase speed much; however we tested it on a computer where HW doesn't support transparency, and that causes horrible drops -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! It is in general a bad idea to use JPEG whenever dealing with sprites (as opposed to backgrounds). This is because JPEG is NOT a lossless format (That's why it manages a to hit a 90% compression rate regularly). Which means that the sharp edges of your sprite will start to look fuzzy in JPEG (and editing them in JPEG format makes it worse). Try GIF. Or just ZIP'ing a BMP file. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! I suppose I could raid the BoA graphics database and ask people if I can use those graphics. Point is I need over sixty different ones, and the BoE graphics database is a lot larger. But suggestions are welcome, I was unaware that a simple method existed of converting 2d graphics to isometrics. I still won't add animation because of time/space constraints though. (and I'm a lousy paint artist myself anyway) -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Shangri-La -> First, what isometric guys? Second, no - unless you can find me some useful images. (and by some I mean fifty different images times six directions times at least four and probably eight frames; if you do the math you'll see it's not really feasible) I am considering unit voices, though (a la Warcraft) Varelse -> I was under the impression that DGA required root. Apparently I was wrong there. The next version will support that. (edit:) My Linux programmer assures me that DGA does require root access. Or is this system-dependent? Please explain. Varelse -> About your Linux suggestions... a window mode option would be easy to add. We're surprised that console switching doesn't work on your machine as it works fine around here. Maybe that would also be fixed by using a windowed mode. 5-7: we'll mention that, thanks. 8. The problem with hardware surfaces (afaik) is that using them requires root access. Which not everybody has. But we could probably add an option for that, too. And yes, it is double-buffered. Turtlewhipper -> Building fortresses in a city will not be possible in future versions. And you can't build multiples, but I guess you could waste engineers' time by having them build simultaneously (I'll see if i can remove that, too). Omlette -> I couldn't download RMK2, all their liniks are down. Anyway I'll see what I can do to simplify things, also I believe that giving a bunch of sample scripts would probably help -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Arna -> Omelette is correct about Leylines (which, by the way, is a strategy game). SubTerra II doesn't require beta testers, instead I'm looking for level designers. If you want to join in there you would have to convince me somehow that you're a capable puzzle designer; the most obvious way to do that would be to send me some samples, preferably from SubTerra 1, Supaplex, Sapphire Yours, Chips Challenge and/or Diamond Caves II. 1. I don't fully understand you but I believe that BoA will have similar restrictions as BoE (assuming you mean legal ones; obviously it will allow for larger worlds etc). 2. There are tons of graphics available on the web; try google, or see question 3. 3. Actually quite a lot of RPG makers exist (I assume that was what you meant). And many come with free-ish graphics that could be converted to Bo*. Try this link. http://search.yahoo.com/bin/search?p=game+maker&ei=UTF-8 -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Ydna -> 1. noted (and fixed) 2. oops?!?! I'll check this asap! 3. true 4. Not really, not even with a ballista. Plan ahead! 5. Hm... if it is the same name, then it should save directly. If not, it should prompt. 6. Noted 7. I'll check that. 8. Wizards can actually hit the ships with their lightning bolts. I do believe galleons are too strong, but there will be other ships. Omlette -> Yes, please send me the save. I'm assuming you have Queues enabled? Turning them off will evade this bug for now. 2. Also weird, do you have a save? Objection: There are two ranks, front and back. Clickin on a unit will change it from front rank to back, or back to front. Easy, no? Score: I think it is, yes! Varelse -> Noted. I'll discuss it with the linux porting dude. Thanks for the suggestions, I have little experience optimizing for linux myself! -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Well done Imban! An interesting detail is that in U6 you can learn this spell from the wisps, who tell you that it is a relatively weak spell since it only affects a single dimension... I also fondly recall the Timestop and Eclipse spells from U6, and some pointless but fun spells like Vanish / Reappear, and some weird thingies like Serpent Bond from U7.5, and the hidden spell from U5 that turns your opponents into rats... Dacovind -> no, the window is not randomly placed. It does cover 'smithy' when running in low resolution (800x600) but that's not important for the tutorial. Research bug noted. 333 MHz is a bit low-end so that would explain the game running slower on your computer. A difference is that AoW stores all data as BMPs (or libraries thereof) and Leylines uses JPEG compression. Which is slower to load, and more so on slower computers. You can't get workers in some captured cities. This is intentional, but will be explained better in the future. If the magnetic edges are so annoying I'll see what I can do about them... -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Ultima! I believe the entire Ultima series (or at least some eight parts thereof) is available in a single package for very cheap, check at origin or electronic arts store. In story-line, they're among the best. And they have some funky spells that are seldom seen in other rpgs (most notably VCBM ) -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Wow, twelve replies in one day! XYZ -> 1. Try turning 'details' off in the config panel from the main menu. Also I'd like to know your system specs. 2.This is intentional and I haven't had any other complaints yet, I wonder what other people think? 3.Oops 4.No it's not. The tutorial window reads 'OR click on the map in the top-left corner' Try that. Omelette -> Admittedly the script docs are somewhat lacking. What do you mean by RMK2 and AoE2? I understand that those are games but I haven't played them. The scout bug is unfortunate. However by that point you should have seen enough of the tutorial to try a scenario and play it. Dacovind -> I haven't noticed the tutorial window hiding anything important. It it does, what exactly? (and this may be a matter of low-res vs. hi-res screens) Gray or missing buttons are a matter of taste I guess. Custer -> Yes, that's a bug. However you can still play scenarios. Order mage -> Yes. XYZ -> The graphics are used with specific permission of their authors. They're fantasy-based. D&D also happens to be fantasy- based but the fantasy-genre predates D&D by some decades at least. You might as well be calling every portrait you see in a museum a Rembrant-ripoff. As a side point most good fantasy art and stories aren't even remotely related to D&D; try Exalted, MERP, RuneQuest and GURPS for some other fantasy RPGs, or good authors like Lackey, LeGuin, Vance and Zelazny. Anyway. There certainly will be people who dislike any graphics. And the current graphics (besides being a lot more atmospheric than solid gray color; if you like that play NetHack!) are about the best I can do for my budget (which is essentially zero). So I will stick with them for now. If you check the screenshots you'll notice there's lots more of them in the menus. (and yes I would like isometric pics for the units; however anybody who knows where to find them should give me a line) For people interested in fantasy fanart check http://www.elfwood.com/ for instance; Personally I think that the Leylines graphics are better than most of the pictures on there. But that's imho. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Andraste -> no. But I have played Civ and Master of Magic; observant players will notice the authors' names in the 'thank you' section of the credits. Varelse -> It seems we have a taste in books in common. As to your offer. Well, the game works under SDL so it /should/ be possible to make a mac port with ease. Now if I can just get the admin here to give me mac access... Others -> Let's abort this topic, there's a new leylines-related topic that's more relevant now, I guess. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Hi everybody, it was a long weekend but I finally have what I consider worthy of a beta version of Leylines. Available for download (windows and linux) on this site: http://www.liacs.nl/~psimoons/leylines.html For those who are new here, that's a turn-based fantasy strategy game. And it's pretty cool if I may say so. What is new... well, spells, fortresses, new combat system, city lists and queues, a bunch of new skills and a ton of bugfixes. Oh, and a tutorial, and other stuff, well take a look anyway. But. Before the flood of messages starts, let me just tell you that some things are missing. First, most graphics and sounds are as yet missing to decrease download size for the beta (many testers appreciate that). Second, a large amount of units and spells are as yet missing because we're busy balancing them out. And that's just easier with a small group here than with a large debate over the forums. Since this is a beta version, if you play it you can be considered a beta-tester. Which means that if you find any bugs, please mail them to me so I can remove them. Also I would like opinions on the clear- ness and ease-of-use of the interface and tutorial. If the tutorial is in ANY way ambiguous or unclear, please tell me (as I want even the biggest idiot to understand the tutotiral ) Also I would like some opinions on the scripting system (hit map editor, then 'script' and press F1 for help). It should be possible to write interesting scenarios using this. Feel free to try. If you believe it needs more options let me know. If you can do cool stuff with it let me know - making a map is easy but making a script is so much more interesting Well that's it for now, comments welcome! -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! Maybe you're just trying weird stuff to find out what happens. But then that's a very good attitude in a tester. I remember the kind of levels Gerben47 used to make to see if SubTerra was working properly, and the really obscure bugs he found when creating and destroying several hundred objects per frame update (which is 1/256th of a second) :) For instance there's a tutorial now that /should/ be proff against people doing weird stuff. Feel free to double-check this. There'll probably be the first beta on monday. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum!
