This idea has been had before (about halfway down the page), to little effect. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I took the liberty of converting the graphics myself and loading it to my site here. That's the Mac version. I used Graphic Adjuster to make the CMG file, and it was remarkably easy. Well done, Niemand! As we've concluded a million or so times before, a GF MMORPG would be possible, and it might even be remotely good. Avernum and Nethergate really couldn't work at all, unless you completely Geneforgize Avernum, which would be a sin greater than A4. However, the discussion should remain all in theory, because there's utterly no chance of Jeff doing any of this. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. As a quick addition: In Latin, dictator just means speaker. It was, as noted, a fairly normal position, but Julius Caesar got himself appointed dictator for life, which was unheard of, and that was the reason that he became unpopular enough with the senatorial class to get executed. Julius Caesar was a pretty good politician (and a pretty good general), but Augustus Caesar was a far better politician and not a bad general himself. He did, of course, have his adopted father's experience to draw on, but Julius Caesar could've learned from Sulla, Catalina, and the others who had attempted to become king before him and failed. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:Yeah, me too, but for different reasons. I don't really give a damn about a representative sample of public opinion. I do think that having an official be answerable to the people is a good thing, and that's what modern democracies try to do, but that's the only concern I have for voting at all. I like this idea because I like the idea of government by the people. I think that people would learn a lot by participating in the government that they so stridently criticize all the time. quote:Less, even, given voter turnout in the primaries. The numbers of registered Democrats, Republicans, and independents are roughly equal in the U.S. (a third of each), and voter turnout is less than half of registered voters even for the main presidential elections — it can be a third or less at primaries — so convincing 5%-10% of the registered voters can be sufficient to win a primary. This is why the conventional wisdom says to play to the extremes in primaries, because you can win with a fairly small fraction of the population. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. For anyone who needs reminding, the relevant rule is that it is generally considered polite to leave a dead topic alone unless you have something genuinely new and useful to add to it, such as answering a question that never got answered — Imban revived a dead topic recently for such a purpose — or posing a new, related one (as in this thread). I think the question posed here has been answered, but I'll leave this thread open anyway, more out of whim and caprice than for any particular reason. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I think it's a good time to remind everyone that members who have been here for less than six months probably shouldn't be explaining the rules to even newer members.
