Update on the HLPM: I have no idea what SW has decided to do with it, because it's still not up on their tables, but my guess is, for one reason or another, they decided not to host it, without even sending me a courtesy e-mail explaining their decision.

It will still be available at my bare-bones web site, Spiderweb or no Spiderweb.

Wow, Vent. I have no idea what you just said to Kyna (typical "clan" attitude?), but it sounded purposelessly insulting.

And I just figured I'd let you know: I will no longer read nor respond to your posts, neither here nor on the Lyceum. It'll save the both of us (and everyone else) a lot of hassle.

There were selkies and references to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts in Nethergate. Further proof that Jeff needs to make Nethergate 2. IMAGE(tongue01.gif)

Yeah, Cav, I think GF has the most to do with genetic engineering, but also touches on issues of racism, slavery, and other things, too. The parenthetical in my post that started this vein of conversation was an afterthought, because I figured that some people might not realize that GF dealt with serious issues.

By the way, I hate the term "playing God" and every variation on it that people use when describing genetic engineering. Every scientific advance since controlling fire has been gaining power over the forces of nature traditionally considerd the domain of gods. Learning how to grow our own food was "obtaining the powers of gods," because it allowed us to control when and what we would eat, instead of just eating whatever nature supplied us. But surely one can't argue that we'd overstepped our bounds ten thousand years ago by developing agriculture, I would think.

Because people tend to misinterpret the posts that I make that are like this (although you don't seem anywhere near as daft as the people who do, one can't be too cautious): I am not making an argument for or against any kind of genetic engineering. I'm just making a statement about my opinion on a certain kind of terminology.

I was wondering the same thing, but then I noticed that certain calls had this disclaimer following them:
This call was added for Scenario Format Version 2, only use it with Mac version 1.1 or later or Windows version 1.0 or later.
I did a search on this in Word, and I think I saw all of the new calls. Other than the string manipulation calls, it looks like there's only get energychar_give_itemmove_to_loc_x_ychar_has_item_of_class_equipI haven't found any other changes yet.

And now that we find out that the Windows version will be out next week, I imagine that it's not so bad for the poor Windows users to wait.

EDIT: And I'm guessing that a bunch of us didn't know about any NDAs signed by beta testers. I sure didn't.

This is really cool! It's good to see that you added some of the calls that we wanted, like get_energy and char_has_item_of_class_equip. I can't wait to start messing around with string manipulation!

Windows users need wait only a tiny bit longer... :)

EDIT: Um, btw, where is that patch for the app? I just downloaded a full new version of the editor, but there is the slight problem that a new copy of the app would be unregistered.

I think this will be easier with BoA, though, because outdoor sections can be imported, too, and scripts (obviously) can be shared.

So maybe the problem was that BoE wasn't conducive to collaboration, but BoA could be. I think it would be easier, at least.

I would imagine that the same sorts of things that make collaborative writing work also will make collaborative designing work, although I am far out of my depth here and will let wiser ones speak.

It's just that people come along wanting to do this every couple of months and only a few have even managed to create scenarios at all. Those few scenarios that were created have not yet once been particularly good (head over to the Lyceum's CSR if you want to see for yourself -- look at the The Wreck of the Slug, for one).

That's not to say it's impossible, just that it's hard. I say if you can find someone, go for it, but our negative response is due to many failures before.

EDIT: Also, TM, Jeff, the Creator, and *i rarely all agree on something. I don't know that I've ever seen that before. But they are all people with considerable experience in the community and know far more than I do.

Hello?

Um, what is the purpose of your post?

By the way, I am unclear on the meaning of the phrase, "Me fick." Fick?

So I guess I'm trying to say that, overall, you confuse me, HD.

I would not oppose a Nethergate 2. Although it would be a bit contrived if it were in the same setting as Nethergate was, because the magic LEFT the area, but still. I'd like to see him do something else with Nethergate somehow.

I feel unresolved, and Nethergate feels unloved. It doesn't get a sequel like GF, or sequels and a massive remake like Exile.

Thus I feel the Aztec idea is not a bad one.

Oh, yes, that was soooo much fun. 41 pages. Longer (by 14) than any of the RPs that I saved. Part of the infamous 10-12 section of General, which also contained the Holding the Tavern Front RP (12 pages) and a spectacular 4 pages of the "I wish for you all to pet my fluffy kitten" topic.

Good times.

What Do You Think Spiderweb Software??? in General

You know, come to think of it, it would not be impossible to make a Geneforge-style game multi-player (although making it MMORPG would be still another hurdle). Because it runs in realtime, and because turn-based multi-player combat DOES work, even though turn-based MMORPG antyhing doesn't, GF could do it. Avernum couldn't, but GF could.

Jeff still probably doesn't have the technical skills for it, by his own admission, and I'm not sure that it's a good use of his time (I'd rather he continue making huge, immersive-world games), but it would be possible.

It might be more merciful if you just EAT the babies, Mr. Power.

On a serious note, um, well, I didn't actually have anything to say, but I can make something up. Collaborations have, on the whole, not been very successful (at least in BoE). If you hold off a little bit until a few more scenarios have come out, you'll have some great examples of code that you can copy and paste into your own scenario with whatever slight modifications you need.

Especially if this is a plot-driven scenario, the code should be fairly easy. A few message_dialog calls, a few If calls, some dialogue, and you're set. Also, good coders generally have their own scens that they want to write.

But if you can find someone, more power to you....

Because I am a fool who is not the least bit techno-savvy: how do I get my computer to recognize that it is a .rar file? I have Boots's apps, and I have three different web browsers, and they all save as crazy .html garble or worse. (I am on a Mac running OS X and I like to use Safari, but I have IE and Netscape, too.)

MSW, I just noticed I had the second page of your "Reoccurring Dreams" topic, too, and sent it.

EDIT: I had most of the rest of those RPs, too, but they should be available at The General Archive as announced in RC's post elsewhere. (That's the link you're looking for, spy.there.)

It's not actually up yet. I sent it in to SW, but they haven't posted it on their site. Unlike just about every other designer here, I don't have a web site -- although I'm thinking about setting one up -- so I can't have my own independent download.

I'll post something once it actually gets up on the SW tables. In the meantime, if you want it, I guess I could e-mail it to you.

EDIT: News! I have a web site now! Um, there's nothing actually on it except for the HLPM, but I got tired of waiting for SW to put it up on their tables. The site is here. (Look for it to change and be much better as time goes on.)
