Beta-Call for Bahssikava in Blades of Avernum

Yup, it's another beta testing opportunity. Here's the deal: I'm not completely finished with alpha testing, but I'm pretty close. I'm going out of town on Wednesday, and I expect to be done with alpha testing right before then, so I'd like some beta testers so that I can send it out right then without having to wait until I get back.

I may not finish alpha by then, and if I don't, don't kill me. I'll be back in about a week, and I'll finish and send it out within a day or two after that.

I'd like to run two rounds of beta, so you can continue to sign up even if I've already sent out the first beta version.

The scenario is medium-length, with twenty-three towns and no real outdoors. It's intended for approximately level 40 parties, and, as always, if you don't have one of those lying around, you can use the HLPM to make one.

To sign up for testing, post a completed form:

Name by which you would like to be referred when I list my beta testers in the readme:
E-mail address:
Beta-testing experience (none required):
Operating system:
What kind of party you intend to use (choose one): the one you used to beat DWtD, a HLPM-made one, one that has finished Canopy, other

Again, expect the scenario on Wednesday. If I can't finish alpha testing by then, I'll post again and you'll get it a week after that.

It's a TM scenario. Don't feel too bad. Everyone probably missed most of the story.

Once you're done playing and re-playing it, feel free to give it a rating on the Lyceum. The ratings page is in TM's signature, but if you find his list of links a bit too long, I'll also give it to you here.

That's why Jeff always put his bookshelves up against walls. If you look, you'll notice he did that both in the Trilogy and in Blades.

Also, Nightfall was a book, not Asimov's idea for a scenario.

As far as I know, no one in the history of Blades has ever made a scenario out of someone else's idea for a scenario.

We told Jeff about this when he was going to make the upgrade from v1.1 to v1.1.1, and I thought he was going to fix this. Oh well.

I've found some bugs lately, too (with beam projectors in particular). I say after GF3 gets released, we push for another bug-fix for BoA.

I, like Djur, don't subscribe to the theory that punishment of criminals is a positive good in itself. I think that punishment is only useful when fear of it prevents people from committing crimes. Punishment is only useful as a deterrent.

I tend to think, from what I understand of intoxication, that people are still somewhat aware when drunk. Unless there was reason to believe that the driver who accidentally killed someone was so drunk that he had absolutely no idea what he was doing (ie this car was parked across the street and he didn't even make it twenty feet before he hit something), he should still be partly responsible for that death. In that way, an imbalance in punishment makes sense to me, although it shouldn't be more than a little imbalanced.

EDIT: Wrong word. It's already quoted, too. How embarrassing.

To the best of my knowledge, no one except for Jeff knows which flags correspond to which quests done. That's why you shouldn't use it, because it will have completely unpredictable and nonsensical effects on your game.

Or possibly that's why you should use it.... ;)

Sound 173 is definitely a moo.

That's funny; it's listed correctly in the resources themselves, but it's mislabeled in the Appendices.

Avernum 4 in General

You were wondering why people have mixed feelings about an Avernum 4. I was one of those people who had mixed feelings, so I can explain some of the reasons.

The fact that Jeff is even making an A4 suggests that he has no new ideas for a new storyline. He swore for many years that he would never make an Exile 4, and the fact that he's making an Avernum 4 tells me that he can think of nothing else. If he had any other viable ideas, he would use them first.

This is not a good sign for BoA designers who like to work within the Avernum universe, because it probably means another stupid vahnatai-Rentar-Ihrno thing. Now don't get me wrong: I liked A2 and A3 a great deal, but the vahnatai in A3 were boring and stupid. I can just hear Jeff thinking, "I need something to cause some monster plagues. How about... the vahnatai! Now why would they be mad enough at the Empire to do this. Hmm. I know! The crystal souls! They're still mad about that!" It was a flimsy justification and took any credibility away from Rentar-Ihrno and her entire clan.

Another stupid vahnatai-Rentar-Ihrno thing means that we'll get an A4 that plays like Erika's Legacy. And Jeff taking a gigantic dump on the Avernum universe is the last thing we need to spur on popularity for BoA.

Also, some people feel this is a kick in the face after they requested an E4 for so many years. Jeff ignored what they wanted in favor of getting more money off of selling the same product ("Here's A1, almost an exact duplicate of E1 in a different engine!"), and now that he has again chosen what is most cost-efficient rather than what his fanbase might want, some people feel rather irritated. I am not among those people, because I'm a newcomer to this scene and I only played the Avernums (Averna?), but I can understand the sentiment.

At any rate, I feel better about this A4 thing now than I did previously. It will be a fun game, even if it at times will inevitably annoy me.

Getting rid of a NPC in Blades of Avernum Editor

There are any number of ways of doing things. One way is to use erase_char and set_flag. That gets rid of the character in the town for the moment, but as soon as the party leaves and re-enters, the character will be back. To fix this, check that flag in the town's INIT_STATE, and if the flag is set, erase_char again in the INIT_STATE, so that the party will never see this character.

There are lots of other ways, too.
