If you look later on in that thread (and in a couple of nearby ones), I did start debating with Drakey about the history of Avernum, with an emphasis on sliths. That discussion informed the background behind my scenario that's been in development basically ever since. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I'd bet a fair amount of money on a new BoA scenario. True. Yes. And from what I hear, their scripts don't actually work properly, too, so we can't give them any sort of decent AI. It would be lovely if we could actually select a target for our joined NPCs, which would be possible if we got all the bug fixes and new calls that we really wanted. Er, that reminds me, we should check up on those new calls and see what Jeff intends to do. Perhaps I shall start a new thread. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! I can't find a good place where he talks about how he codes, but he primarily uses C (and I think a bit of C++). He uses Codewarrior Gold for Macs, I believe, and, er, well, the best I could come up with was his statement on this thing. But yes, he uses C. Ack, Alorael got there first. EDIT: As a sidenote, Arenax claimed that as he was looking through the BoA Editor source code, he noticed that at some point Jeff had actually switched from C to C++. Has anyone else observed this? In the Options menu, under "See Adventure Notes," there is a choice that says, "See Overall Party Stats." It's there in A3. I haven't checked the others, though. EDIT: Directed at Arenax, of course. Solberg, what are you talking about? I checked before I posted, and those statistics are available in E3, BoE, and A3, and presumably in the entire Exile and Avernum series. How do you think I got those statistics out of A3 if they were only available in Exile? Please start using common sense. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Joining NPCs in BoA work like Nethergate NPCs, not Avernum ones, so there is no way to do this directly. I suppose one could, however, enable the character to "buy an NPC" by changing a current party member's stats to some pre-set numbers. That is, if you wanted to buy an NPC and put him in slot 3, the state would run a whole bunch of alter_stat calls until the character in slot 3 was completely redone. One could even suggest in a message_dialog changing the graphic to some specific image. Allow me to repeat myself: "If you run the editor and it immediately gives you a ton of errors (like that it can't find the "Warrior's Grove" file), you need to move the editor application (.exe file) itself into the "Data" (Windows) or "Blades of Avernum Files" (Mac) folder." — from the BoA Editor header And the error message itself tells you what you need to do: "Make sure the editor is in the Data folder of Blades of Avernum (and not in a sub-folder)." In Avernum, it's darn near impossible to play for long enough in game-time for aging to be necessary. Even A3, which is extraordinarily massive, requires less than 200 game days to beat with any reasonable playing style. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. My first thought: "If you run the editor and it immediately gives you a ton of errors (like that it can't find the "Warrior's Grove" file), you need to move the editor application (.exe file) itself into the "Data" (Windows) or "Blades of Avernum Files" (Mac) folder." — from the BoA Editor header Does it give a specific error? If so, it would be helpful to know the exact text of the error message. Also, are you opening the .bas file in the scenario folders? That's the one that you need to select (so in Valley of the Dying Things, you want to open valleydy.bas in the editor). Someone else would know this more thoroughly than me, but I think there is a bug that if you place a stairway node on a particular square, say (10,10), and there's a special on the corresponding space in the entry town, that is, (10,10) in the town the party is moving into, that special gets called. Are your stairways on the same (x,y) coordinates in their respective towns? -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Because of their invulnerabilities, it's not possible to kill either Garzahd or Rentar-Ihrno with one hit. With a character editor-maxed out party, I did manage to create a party that would take no more than two or three damage points from anything, but I seriously doubt that such a thing could be created legitimately. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. In short, yes. The call tick_difference does this. There are some issues, however. For instance, when a saved game is reloaded in the outdoors, the variables get reset, so any normal practice of setting a variable to get_current_tick and testing tick_difference doesn't work. You could get around this using SDFs. The dehydration script I wrote (here) demonstrates how to use SDFs to keep track of time. Basically, the idea is to use two SDFs as two digits in base-256. That is, the first one is set to 0 for all number 0-255. Then, for 256-511, the first one is 1, and the second one ranges over the same numbers. If you must, you can even use a third SDF if you expect the tick number to be obscenely high. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. In the Options menu, there is a choice called "See Overall Party Stats." It lists number of kills, kills in this town, total experience, total damage done, and total damage taken. I think some people would have very impressive stats of this nature for certain BoE scenarios. A party that has just finished Demon Island II, for instance, would have obscenely high total damage done. Sadly, I never played E3, but for A3, my final party had this: Number of kills: 4635 Total experience: 310195 Total damage done: 1354588 Total damage taken: 80674 Current reputation: 74 Evidently I gave far better than I got (by better than a 15:1 ratio). -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
