In reference to the vahnatai being ninjas: I think that comes from the fact that they through razordisks, which look a lot like ninja stars. Vahnatai have Blades and warrior types as well as mages, and both are signficantly advanced: the waveblades are supposed to be far superior to normal swords, which I think is a reference to Japanese Tokugawa-era metallurgy, which was the best medieval smithing ever. It's not nearly as much of a stretch as it might at first seem, although it is still a stretch. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. You know, that question has been done before, but we have not actually discussed it in recent enough memory for it to be annoying. We've made references to our own opinions (I think the Blades community overall leans towards liking E2/A2's story the most, with individual variations), but we haven't really discussed why. Certainly the overarching plotline of E3/A3 is a bit stupid: the vahnatai? Monsters plagues? Because of vengeance? Still? Jeez. Perhaps if E3/A3 spent more time developing the vahnatai's attachments to their crystal souls — show us why they care so much — then it would perhaps be more reasonable. But as it is, it seems forced. The vahnatai seem crazy. Their fight seems largely groundless (less so if you've played E2/A2 lately, but still), and the monster plagues seem cliched. That said, the execution of the plotline is pretty good. Each dungeon was really, really fun. I just think the greater narrative could've used some work. Meanwhile, E2/A2's narrative is generally fairly reasonable, in that each of the three quests pretty much logically follows, and we're not asked to swallow too much when the vahnatai make their initial mistake and then afterwards side with the exiles. E2/A2 structurally seemed like too much of a copy of E1/A1, but it did well as far as greater narrative. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I am not one to speculate on how Rosycat lost two electrons, nor am I wont to make a menstruation-related comment with respect to such change. However, I am certainly one to be in denial. Take that how you will. A few things. Any specific scripting questions can be directed at us, the community, and we're pretty good at handling them if you provide us with a fair amount of information (do you get error messages, what do they say exactly, what is the line of code to which they refer, etc). Also, I wrote an article that, er, I never bothered to get posted on the SW web site, but I suppose I should. I'll upload it to my site momentarily. At any rate, it's sort of a basic introduction slightly beyond what's offered in the docs. I have a cut scene how-to article on my site already. (EDIT: The article is up.) A few people have made scripting utilities. Arenax made a dialogue script utility for PCs, AvDialogue. Khoth made a cross-platform script-checking utility, Alint. There were a few utilities for custom objects scripts floating around, none of which were particularly good. Those can all be helpful in learning. And if you're talking about dialog boxes, not dialogue, then the call to give the player extra choices is add_dialog_choice. It's listed under Basic Dialogue Box Calls. Due to inflating my post count by answering newbies' questions on the game boards (and untold VoDT questions — "I killed the chief spider and can't beat the game! Now what?!"), an activity which inadvertently got me a modship (over three games that I haven't actually bought, no less), I have managed to achieve 2000 posts in just over nine months. I am still waiting for the Canning, but I'm sure it's coming. At any rate, I wanted to invite you all to celebrate with me in this thread. TWO THOUSAND! I don't get the people who've played the games, looked at CSR, read the ratings, disagree, and don't say anything. Post your opinion and rating, especially if it's different from the ones that are there! It doesn't have to be deep or profound, just "I liked it because I thought the plot was interesting" if that's all that you can manage, and give a number from 1 to 10. Everyone benefits if the ratings are more representative of what most players think. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Are you working from the Blades of Exile hints or something? The Opening Stone from the spiders isn't a special item in BoA. It's a regular item, number 478. EDIT: I suppose you could use the Advanced Features option to give that item, still. I swear to god, I am going to make a new version of VoDT with a fix to this problem, send it to Jeff, and kick and scream until he changes it. Everyone makes this mistake. Here's the deal: some people have had success using the character editor option "Reset Towns." Note that you will have to leave the town, reset it, and enter it again. If that doesn't work (but it should), you may be in some trouble and have to start over. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. As you have undoubtedly noted with your precise wit, neither Exile 3 nor Avernum 3 actually came with a scenario editor. The game with a scenario editor was separate. It's actually identical, grammatically. The only issue would be whether the first sentence was clear, which it was. And "ain't" is a colloquial contraction of "am not," and it is not even remotely acceptable in formal English. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I liked Taskmaker and Tomb of the Taskmaker a lot. I was disappointed when I discovered that StormImpact had died. Avernum and Exile are different from Taskmaker in that they have much more complex combat, dialogue, and spell systems and are much, MUCH bigger. They're like Taskmaker, only more of everything. But, er, what's your point? -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
