As far as I can tell, the default Eyebeast graphic has its icons in the wrong order. This means that the creature will appear to be facing south when it's actually facing north in the editor, east when west, west when south, and north when east. We've been over that verse before, and although I can't speak for the Hebrew directly, I can say that the best authorities I've heard on it indicate that it's not exactly phrased clearly. This is what I've heard before: The "detestable" word at the end ("abomination" in the KJV) is an over-translation. The word simply means "ritually unclean" (for which the solution is a bath, and honestly, bathing after any sort of intercourse is not a bad idea). The verse itself seems to indicate, literally, that a man should not lie with another man in a woman's bed. Explaining this away as forbidding same-sex intercourse is possible, but by no means the only possibility. Which brings me back to my main point, which is that it's certainly possible to interpret several lines in the Bible as condemning same-sex intercourse, but it's definitely not easy to demonstrate that they necessarily do. quote:Good to know. Why? EDIT: And bear in mind that your answer should explain why the example doesn't support the main point that I was making. You've tried Christianity and experienced pleasurable sensations. You sound as though you expect everyone else to feel exactly the same thing when they try what you've tried. I'm simply pointing out that this is not a reasonable expectation. Even that seemingly benign idea still suggests that this experience that feels good for you (believing in God, worshipping God) would feel good for everyone else, too. If I ate a particularly delicious leek soup, I might tell my friends, "Guys, you have to try this soup." If they tried it and recoiled in disgust at the taste, I wouldn't say, "No, but really, guys, you have to accept the soup into yourself!" -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:Eh, that's what I meant, yes. And when we're talking about what is correct in writing, that's the kind of English we're normally referring to. In order to clarify whether one means prescriptive or descriptive, it makes sense to me to use the term "correct" for prescriptive and "most commonly used" (or simply "used") for descriptive. It'd be nice if that terminology were standard. I'm pretty sure that nobody counts backwards. "Fourth" means "fourth from the beginning." A description, of sorts. It's as though part of middle school were combined into high school. You start secondary school at age 12. For crying out loud, I think the first post called that statement a lemma because it was a proven statement (without proof given) that was part of a greater proof that was not given. I can tell you, for instance, that the Product Rule was a lemma in Newton's Principium, but I don't have to give you the proof of the Product Rule or tell you the greater proof in which the Product Rule was used in order for the statement that the Product Rule was a lemma to be true. My bed has white sheets. Do I have to post a picture of my bed for you to believe that the previous statement is true? In other words, we were supposed to believe that it was a lemma because he said so, not because he demonstrated that it was. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Energy is the ability to do work. Kinetic energy, a subset of that, is how much oomph something has when it's moving, how much work it can do on something when it hits that thing. Never mind that momentum is also how much oomph something has when it's moving. They're different kinds of oomph. What I wonder if is this is the equivalent to a conceptual regular high school physics, an honors SAT II-level high school physics, or an AP B-equivalent high school physics — because it's clearly not equivalent to an AP C class — but I don't even know how to ask that question in a way that would make sense to a European. In terms of IBs, maybe? I don't know the IB system well enough. EDIT: Ah, here we go. What physics classes are offered at your school, Thralni? What are their names and what do you do in each? quote:That is so not true. You have to believe the Bible literally means what you think it means and is completely true. Only then are you set. :P In all seriousness, there are parts of the Bible that simply were not intended to be literally true. There's that troublesome last book of the NT, for instance, which darn near calls itself a metaphor ("shows by signs," as Synergy and I have previously discussed). If you assume that the Bible is literally true, you still have to figure out what the blatant metaphors mean. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. The most technically correct thing to do is to say, "he, she, or it" each time you want to use a pronoun to refer to such a god. This is clunky and cumbersome, but it is technically correct. Using "he" as a default has fallen out of favor over the past half-century or so. And while using "they" is common, it's not considered correct by anyone. Well, in our productive meeting, we spoke of the idea of asking Jeff to provide some financial backing for this contest. My idea was this: 1st prize: $100 2nd prize: $60 3rd prize: $40 4th and 5th prizes: a free game This is about 1/5th what he offered last time, and it totals about $250 in value. Thoughts? Should we start lower than that? Also, who ought to ask him, and how? Some have suggested that I ought to do it, but I'm not sure. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Alo: I wasn't trying to give a conceptual explanation of kinetic energy. I was trying to answer Ephesos's objection that the equation is not used much in everyday life. Now, I don't know how often you actually have to calculate how fast a thing will be moving when it hits the ground, but sometimes it might be interesting to do so. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
