By the way, did the thread in which this exchange took place get deleted? I can't find it anywhere. It was called, "Convince me to buy Genevernum," I think. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Ach, A4. There's a lot of hacking, most of it good. There's a plot that follows completely sensible lines but will surprise absolutely no one in the slightest bit at any point, so if predictability bothers you, this game is not for you. There are some old friends still around (although the mages like Solberg kind of freaked me out rather than re-assured me). But it really doesn't look or feel like Avernum. I give it a 7: if this were a BoA scenario, I'd congratulate the designer on finishing something that was competent and mostly fun and so long, but I'd encourage him to work harder on the finer points next time. The shades were cool, but nothing else in the game developed atmosphere, and hacking gets old after a while: if I'm not inclined to play A3 again, I'm certainly never going to play A4 again. Yeah, you have to go off and... er... whatever it is that's occupying the other fort commander's time, you have to deal with that. It's bandits at that fort northwest of Blosk, I think. Deal with that, and you can finish this quest. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Well, for A3, not E3, I'm conflicted. It was really fun to play once, but I don't think that I would ever play it again. Atmosphere ranges from outstanding (Lorelei, Gale) to head-scratchingly bad (Ghikra). Quests and combat ranged from entertainingly hard (the golem factory) to relatively dumb and pointless (I don't remember anything on the Isle of Bigail). Some things were not planned out as well as they could have been (the Tower of Magi destruction occurs far too late), and some build up to a great payoff (heading progressively north until one gets to Blackcrag). Yes, the overall plot is kind of lame, as has been noted, but it's not nearly as lame as A4, and individual characters and plot points nearly redeem it. But that's just not enough to get this a really high score. I give it an 9: monumental, huge, fun, but also flawed. Probably better than any Blades scenario I've played, but I haven't played many of the top tier. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Dorikas is straight south from Rentar-Ihrno. My impression is that it is not. It doesn't get hard until the clawbugs in the Eastern Gallery, and that's past the demo barrier. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. "Mac" also refers to the computer itself. "I don't like Macs" could mean that one cannot stand the way that the computers themselves are physically assembled. A Mac isn't simply a PC running the Mac OS, after all; the hardware is different, too. Personally, I like not having to put anything together myself; take it out of the box, plug it in, and turn it on, and it works! And by the way, Thralni, please stop spelling -asm words with -asme. In English, "sarcasm" and "enthusiasm" don't have E's on the end. quote:And I cringe whenever someone says, "a matrice." But by what I posted above, "a bacteria" would still be wrong, just as "a water" is wrong; one doesn't use an indefinite article with a collective noun. But one might say "the bacteria is harmless," although I think that sounds terrible, personally, and I suspect that most grammarians would recommend against it. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. There is a long and good history of Latin neuter plurals being re-analyzed as collective singulars. I'm all in favor of "the media" being a singular noun, even as we can say "one medium," "two media" — or better, "two mediums." -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Having had a discussion about this already with an Italian, I can mention that I've found no evidence that the plural of "scenario" was ever (in English) "scenarii," and it was certainly never "scenari." It is, has been, and always will be (in English) "scenarios." I am left to ponder the concept that this appears to be a derivation (in Italian) from the word (in Latin) "scena," meaning "stage," which by (Latin) derivational standards would create the word "scenarius," for which the plural would (in Latin) be "scenarii," and in English would probably be loaned as "scenary," which apparently is the old spelling of "scenery." -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. But what fix do you suggest? How much lobbying influence is too much? How do you take away the incentive for pork? I think it's probably possible to reduce some of the problems and clean up things somewhat, but making a real dent in corruption is tough. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. If he doesn't have a Chinese font, those letters are probably coming out as question marks or boxes for him. I suggest searching "Chinese fonts" on Google.
