Yea, I'm not sure how much closer to "real Chinese" you're wanting to get.

I don't know if there are any fonts that have unsimplified Chinese characters and calligraphy and all that. I'm sure they exist, but not commonly.

If he doesn't have a Chinese font, those letters are probably coming out as question marks or boxes for him.

I suggest searching "Chinese fonts" on Google. I was able to find a couple of fonts for Linear B, so I have every reason to believe that Chinese is readily available.

I have Windows XP and I can read the symbols just fine. Er, I can view them just fine. Reading them is beyond my abilities.

Ditto.

正方形 displayed as three squares, eh? Now that is irony within irony...

All you have to do (on firefox, which you should all have) is go to the view menu, drop down to character encoding and change the settings.

Doesn't work. I'm using Firefox, and all I get out of TM's signature is question marks. Which is all well and good, since I wouldn't understand it anyway, the barbarian that I am.

An Asian alphabet pack needs to be installed on the OS as well.

t Kraken: I think the Windows install CD has the language packs you need on it. Go to the "Regional and Language Options" in your control panel. At least I have the option to install said alphabet under "languages".

It should've installed itself after selecting it.

Maybe the U.S. versions of Windows are more multi-cultural? The point is, I can't see the kanji, and I think what I suggested above might work.

No. If it's not installed, selecting it will do nothing. The character encoding just specifies the way Firefox tells Windows how to display the page. If Windows doesn't have Asian characters, it can't display them.

From the last time I installed XP, I dimly remember being able to choose certain components, these including the extended language sets, which I enabled. I might be wrong.

Possibly you needed to have selected an "Advanced" or "Custom" option in the setup to get that choice. Incidentally, if you have any idea of how installing a program works, choosing that option is a good idea, as a rule. Trusting the one who made the installer to know exactly what you need isn't always reliable.
