I have no opposition to Christian music, as long as it's solid musically. I pride myself on being very tolerant, and overtly Christian lyrics wouldn't bother me at all. I don't tend to pay much attention to lyrics anyway. In terms of my musical preferences, practically everything I like would be considered mellow by your standards. Fast songs are okay, but I do prefer the mid-tempo or slower stuff. I also have a particular liking for epic/anthemic songs as well as mood pieces. Psychedelic elements are a plus in general, and a touch of jazz, blues, or classical can be nice as well. Quality musicianship is important, and a decent vocalist is a must. Pretty much anything featuring typical '80s production values is out. In terms of genres, I won't listen to anything that would be classified as heavy metal, hard rock, emo, punk, hip-hop, rap, or bubblegum pop according to today's standards. I'll give any other genre at least a chance. [ Friday, August 05, 2005 20:09: Message edited by: Stugri-La ] -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. quote:Of course I love beautiful women as well. I'm also just a little bit afraid of what they're capable of. I'm afraid it stems from a personal weakness of mine; I'm pretty much clay in the hands of any attractive woman that knows what she's doing. Of the three most common afflictions you listed, I only suffer from the first. I find tight places cozy, actually, and prefer to speak in front of a large audience than to one other person or a small group. Speaking with complete levity, I think it wouldn't be that bad if every woman on Earth was attractive, but with diversity of features preserved. Converting all of humankind into white-skinned, blonde, blue-eyed creatures would certainly be a poor idea. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Acro/altophobia (fear of heights) Aichmophobia (fear of needles or pointed objects) Angrophobia (fear of anger or of becoming angry) Anuptaphobia (fear of staying single) Apiphobia (fear of bees) Arachnophobia (fear of spiders) Automysophobia (fear of being dirty) Caligynephobia (fear of beautiful women) :P Catapedaphobia (fear of jumping from high and low places) Decidophobia (fear of making decisions) Entomophobia (fear of insects) Ergophobia (fear of work) Hypengyophobia (fear of responsibility) Social Phobia (fear of being evaluated negatively in social situations) All of those apply, to greater or lesser degree. I've never really cared for cars, at least the sleek modern ones, so I suppose any car that was reasonably aesthetically pleasing would do. Driving around one of those baby blue retro models would be rather nice, though. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. In my younger years I used to idolize some of my more self-assured friends. In those years, I was constantly dogged by low self-confidence, physical and emotional vulnerability, and a cowardly mind. A growth spurt and some facial hair took care of much of the problem, and I no longer look to real people for inspiration. At times I believe I attempt to conform to what I find the ideal type of male, the charming rogue with the heart of gold. I'd really love to be that sort of man, but I'm still a ways away from possessing the necessary confidence. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. We Hindus have prayers to be said before meals just as Christians do. However, I only bother to say them when I'm at the house of a family friend and everyone else is reciting these prayers. I am quite religious, but I've never placed much importance in rituals and such. Besides, as I don't believe that God/Brahman interferes at all with the workings of the mortal plane, there is little point in praying in times of need. Some Hindus believe that praying over food will "sanctify" it, but I don't believe this has any effect. My religious thoughts tend to focus exclusively on how I can bring myself closer to the state of even-mindedness, or moksha. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Well, Ash, certainly all of us religious types could choose to perceive it as a harmless oversight. :P Although I felt that immediate action against Al-Qaeda following the 9/11/01 attacks was necessary and fully supported the attack on the Taliban in Afghanistan, I found Bush's reasoning for stretching the fight into Iraq to be contrived and misleading from the beginning. I voted against him in the last elections and am thoroughly opposed to the majority of his policies. That said, I really don't care to discuss any of this. I haven't played through Backwater Calls, A Large Rebellion, or Undead Valley. UV's reputation dissuaded me, the bugs in the initial version of ALR turned me off, and I got somewhat lost in BC and quit. I've played through every other scenario released. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is destroyed when the mind is bewildered. I've got a strong fear of heights, and the most fearful moment of my life was almost certainly the first time I reached the very top of a tall roller coaster on a visit to Six Flags (an amusement park) back in middle school. This particular coaster was designed in such a way that it would pause for a moment at the very top of its ascent before dropping its passengers into the abyss. I recall the growing trepidation in my mind during the ascent, dramatically replaced by utter shock and fear at the drop that awaited me. I'm still mortally afraid of roller coasters even now, but as I've gotten a bit more used to them the fear is less overpowering. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Well, that's only practical if you're living at home. If one never bothers to develop some self-regulation and self-authority in youth, even while living with authoritative parents, it's sometimes doubtful that he'll ever manage to become his own master. I'm getting a bit personal here, as this has been one of my major stumbling blocks in early adulthood. And thus far, I haven't truly been able to master it and enforce structure in my life. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. I spent an entire week at college going to sleep at 7 AM and waking up at 3 PM, of course missing every one of my classes in the process. I felt something like a vampire after a few days of this, as I was missing the sun entirely. Getting into the habit of going to sleep only when you feel like it is a bad idea, as you'll just continue to push that bedtime further and further forward. Setting a hard-and-fast bedtime is a drag, but it's sometimes the only way to go. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. The Emerson, Lake & Palmer album Trilogy includes a fugue, of sorts. Kel is right about musical styles phasing in and out. There's a decidedly retro influence on contemporary indie music, although much of it is inspired by the work of singer/songwriters like Cat Stevens and Nick Drake, who are decent but a bit too mellow for my tastes. I long achingly for a return of the heady "San Francisco sound" or the glorious, entirely idiosyncratic sounds of early Traffic or King Crimson, but none of it's to be found nowadays. :( Ash, perhaps the reason I haven't managed to find what I've been looking for is just a matter of taste. It's also possible that I haven't been looking in the right places. I would certainly welcome any recommendations you might have. Horn might be a good producer; I haven't listened to enough of his work to make a judgement on his skill. However, I could care less that Macca used him; his solo work was superb during the seventies, but it's been decidedly spotty since. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Reverse psychology can also be a good call. When I'm having difficulty falling asleep and there's no booze about, I'll sometimes start thinking about attempting to stay up the entire night. Just felt like recording something else, so here it is: My rendition of "Edelweiss" I, too, will likely be slowing down a bit in my posting over the next couple of months. The approaching semester will be crucial for me, and need to get off to a strong start. As the likelihood of me managing to cut down on all the boozing and partying is slight, something else just has to give. :P Unfortunately, that "something else" will have to be this forum. The new clips are interesting. Marlenny and Spring sound much as I had imagined they would, although Spring's got a pleasantly nonchalant delivery. Aran's piano playing is superb. I'd try to record myself playing the harmonium, but lack of practice has degraded my technique to an absolutely shameful level. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger.
