It's a real pain, especially when you're extremely tired but can't fall asleep. I've been suffering from it all summer, and if you look at the times of many of my postings, you'll find that they're rather early in the morning for someone who operates on EST.

Hence, I was wondering if any of you have some favorite methods of conquering the inability to fall asleep. They might be able to help me cope until I can force my circadian discords back into rhythms with willpower and perhaps an over-the-counter sleeping aid. :P

I have no idea. I recently had insomnia from things that were happening in my life and I just didn't sleep for a few days. I recommend drinking a few beers and that will make you really tierd.

Alchol does mak you dizzy enough to lie down, atleast if you are within your own home. Try it out.

And if you are not old enough to drink, try watching CartoonNetwork.

A couple drinks will probably do the trick. Failing that, being conscious of your breathing can help. Concentrating one's mind on taking long, slow breaths aids in the relaxation of body and mind. Sleep tends to follow.

- Play RW games :P
- Do yoga.
- Lay down in your bed and do relaxing practice like "my breath is deep and slow, my body is heavy and I sink down into the mattress, my heart beats slow and slower, my legs are heavy, my arms relax ..." and so on.
- Rather than alcohol I would suggest to drink a glass of warm milk with honey or some relaxing herb teas like balm-mint or skibbane.

I highly doubt counting on the depressent properties of skribbane.

I think the main thing to do is get yourself in bed. Then do something relaxing, such as reading. If that does nothing, then get up and read the message boards. When you're done with that, go back to bed and read. When daylight comes, at least you'll be a little rested.

It sounds weird, but catnip tea works really well. I have never found any commercially packaged catnip tea, but if you get dried catnip, put one teaspoon in a cup of hot water and let it sit for at least 6 minutes, though I find 10 works best.

I often have this problem. Such as this morning: up to 4 in the morning at a friends house because some people wouldn't stop playin DDR and the flashing lights kept me up 'till 4 and I couldn't sleep and I was so tired I fell asleep during a funeral I was attending this morning. Awful.

I simply close my eyes, and I fall asleep. I have never had insomnia.

EDIT: If you want, I could crush up some sleeping pills and put them in your drink... :P

How often do you have difficulty sleeping? How much sleep do you usually have, and how much do you have during periods of insomnia?

If your mind truly refuses to sleep, then even concentrating on the most boring or mundane things will only help a little.

You should still have some stretches of a few days at a time in which your sleeping patterns are normal. During those times, develop a schedule before going to bed. Do the exact same things every single night, and hopefully your brain will gain a mode that prepares for sleeping. This particular method worked very well for my former history teacher.

I do not suggest lying down in bed trying to sleep unless you have many hours to devote to it. I have no idea why, but trying to sleep exacerbates the problem immensely. Try sleeping somewhere else in your house, but have something passive to help you pass the time, like a TV. If you are spending completely sleepless nights, then you should see a sleep specialist.

I think this insomnia is caused by the fact that I've been taking naps at strange hours during the day. I usually get an hour and a half of sleep these days if I really focus on getting to bed. I'm going to start sleeping at a certain time and waking up at a certain time to get back on schedule.

I imagine the beer suggestions are prudent, but right now some good old herbal remedies are working decently. I'm rather sleepy.

But thank you for the suggestions and comments; eventually I'll be able to sleep normally again.

Well, first of all, there is a difference between sleepiness and tiredness. I'm often tired, but never sleepy.

If you want to tire yourself out, I've heard exercise is good. Sleepiness though is harder...

I'd suggest you just go with it. If you really can't sleep, why waste time trying. One or two missed nights won't hurt, especially if you're not at school anymore.

Try a glass of warm milk before you go to bed. Also try a few drops of bergamot oil on your pillow. As for me I wish that I could stop waking up at 2am every morning, it doesn't matter what time i go to sleep, I always wake up then :mad:

I myself use this method. If you're thinking all the time about something (like that stupid problem you have with scripting and can't find a solution (or somehting like that)), I say to myself: "Its indeed irritating and a stupid problem, but I don't have to solve it now." In about ten minutes I fall a sleep.

Reverse psychology can also be a good call. When I'm having difficulty falling asleep and there's no booze about, I'll sometimes start thinking about attempting to stay up the entire night. That usually puts me out withing five minutes. :P

I stayed up all night once, and the day after I was so sleepy I could hardly keep my eyes open. So I don't think I want to do that ever again. I usually am able to go to bed and sleep until morning.

Now, we should see, now that it's summer vacation for those of use still in high school, what's the average time you go to bed? I know we did something like this a while back, but it was just the general hours of sleep every night you get.

I am capable of staying up all night and being okay the next day, but if I try to stay awake for more than about 40 hours I start dozing off as soon as I stop moving for a couple minutes.

Reading and scripting will make me tired if it is late at night, so will listening to soft music. Yoga/stretching will help me sleep too; after a couple backbends I feel kind of stoned (in a way), and it's easy to fall asleep.

I had a similar patch when I was sleeping at odd times (read: 4-11am), this was during the school holidays. I forced myself to go to sleep at better times of night, I also started playing sport again, and these two things seemed to do the trick.

Maybe by the time I was ready to go to sleep, I hadn't used as much energy as my body had expected, so I stayed awake. I'm also sure that by being strict on when I finally went to sleep helped. I'm certain that this would be a major problem if you got used to going to sleep at 4am, if you let it become normal. It's all about willpower and self-discipline.

The last time I went to bed before 1 AM must have been more than two weeks ago, on the evening before my exam. And I'm not sure about that.

Generally, I sleep when I'm tired. Which makes my day a bit wonky, as I tend to doze in the afternoon and only get really awake around midnight (sometimes in Summer I go to bed once I see the dawn outside...).

I spent an entire week at college going to sleep at 7 AM and waking up at 3 PM, of course missing every one of my classes in the process. I felt something like a vampire after a few days of this, as I was missing the sun entirely. Getting into the habit of going to sleep only when you feel like it is a bad idea, as you'll just continue to push that bedtime further and further forward. Setting a hard-and-fast bedtime is a drag, but it's sometimes the only way to go.
