The Usual Suspects or Adaptation. —Alorael, whose taste in movies is hugely informed by his general distaste for seeing movies at all. Even when they're good he hates go watch them. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I'm no expert on volcanoes, but I believe the risk is more of a statistical projection than a set mechanical buildup and release cycle. Major eruptions may come at approximately two million year intervals, but it's still like flipping coins and seeing how long it takes to get five heads in a row (not that this accurately reflects likelihood!). Since, to the best of my knowledge, it's not the same volcano that erupts cataclysmically every few million years, I definitely lean towards the statistical coincidence side of things. I'd also like to point out that the margin of error in volcano prediction with a cycle length of two million years is probably a few thousands years either way anyway. —Alorael, who will not wait with bated breath for the next literally world-shattering geological event. With the rate of human change, the Second Coming or virtual sterilization of the planet by nuclear attacks are more plausible threats to human society than volcanoes. Large-scale teleportation systems near the capital are possible. Remember that Valorim is the backwater, and that the real magic is likely to be elsewhere. Actually, the idea of a Forbidden City and Beijing setup in the Empire is both plausible and a good springboard for very entertaining plots about intrigue. I could see Jeff working with something like that, too, although I could also see him rejecting it out of hand. It's hard to tell with some ideas. —Alorael, who also suspects that the Empire doesn't work exactly like China. For one thing, it doesn't have quite the same flavor of corruption. For another, Prazac managed to hole up in Blackcrag without an entourage of thousands. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If RWG is renamed Imban, I'll be forced to shut down General in retaliation. The defacement of that poor, abused forum can only go so far. —Alorael, who will do it, so help him abuse of mod status. Don't push a desperate man! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You have committed a major breach of the CoC, WM. I'll let you figure out how! —Alorael, who will take skribbane over coffee spiked with cocaine any day. Sure, the latter has caffeine as well as a harder drug, but skribbane is skribbane. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

One of Nethergate's strong suits is the ambience, which mixes the backdrop of real conflict between Romans and natives with the entirely mythical Shadow Valley, complete with bits of many, many legends and mythologies we know or should know. Trying to drop faeries into the world of Avernum would ruin that nicely. Actually making a Nethergate scenario would work well, though. A prequel would be easier than a sequel for reasons that I won't go into here, but that could work nicely too. The Brigantes weren't the only ones to resist the Romans, and even the Celts were only one group... —Alorael, who would miss having the dual perspective of Roman and Celt parties in a scenario (and finding Nether spells!), but the idea is good. Don't be silly. The Xian items were scattered all over Valorim and X was just fine. Those were obviously prototype new parts that didn't make the cut. The real Xian items under the robe are much more powerful. —Alorael, who would be more interested in knowing if the real things are as quixotic as the Xian items available in A3. Judging by X him(her?)self, probably. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Don't listen to him! It's a conspiracy, I tell you! Spiderweb and Drakey are in cahoots and have terrible, evil plans! This isn't news to any of you, I hope. —Alorael, who would actually be quite surprised if anyone did not realize Spiderweb's malicious intentions yet. There are some mad monks in Gebra, which can be reached by taking a ferry from Storm Port in southeastern Valorim. They're the only mad monks I can think of in the demo of E3. —Alorael, who doesn't recall seeing any skribbane there. He thought that the monks were driven mad by kung fu, especially the feisty slap of pain, and not mere drugs. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I got it the second time. My comment was in reference to My Quasimodo's post about the benefits of paying the thieves off. In addition to not having to fight, you also don't have to stumble through by trial and error. —Alorael, who isn't usually so unobservant as to miss the point of a topic three times running. If he does that, it is obviously deliberate and doubtlessly for the greater good. We could all probably live happy lives without ever knowing of the existence of the Oort Cloud, and yet... don't you feel more fulfilled? Somehow? Even a little bit? —Alorael, who doesn't, really. The only thing that stops him from locking the topic is laziness and an interest in seeing whether true wisdom can be found in this thread like the sun appearing from behind the clouds, but not the Oort Cloud. A comes before E in my name. Mockery is perfectly natural, but my drug is not pitiful. It is also mine. If my dealers have been selling to others, there will be consequences. Oh yes, there will. Triple posting, on the other hand, is entirely unnatural. Boo! —Alorael, who has his own detox proposal. Anyone caught with skribbane will be sniped. They will then be forced to do hard manual labor on a skribbane plantation for the next two decades. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Yes, I think the mage in the Inn of Blades is the one who gives you directions with the tree square. The reward you get is the Identify spell, though, which is even less useful than a summoning spell. You're better off taking the metal lumps to Carmine. —Alorael, who suspects that some of the geography was accidental and other geography was intentionally red herringed. Well, that or Jeff forgot to put in the relevant nodes. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's when you bring back the Hot Crystal Shards as evidence after stopping the golem plague, actually. —Alorael, who will console you with two thoughts. The first is that the sealed area of Ghikra isn't all that exciting, although it does clear up a very small mystery. The other is that you can always register E3. The editor probably lets you find out what's in Ghikra immediately. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

SubTerra is fun if you have a PC (or Virtual PC) and like challenging puzzles and challenging tests of your reflexes. Lost Souls is worth downloading. It's an interesting concept, and while I wouldn't pay to register it, the demo is nice. Ocean Bound isn't bad. It's just not fun. Galactic Core is Spiderweb's poster child of an awful game. There's no single element I can point to and call horrendous, but the overall effect is rather painful. Homeland would be the poster child of an awful game if more people played it. It's slow, frustrating, and irritating by turns. —Alorael, who will thus recommend Lost Souls for the Mac user and SubTerra for those with PCs. If you download the others, you have been warned. There's a square of trees somewhere that is used as a landmark by someone who gives you directions, but I don't think it's near Stormport. —Alorael, who will say that you should go to the center of the square and then walk a fair way in all four cardinal directions. If you still don't find anything, you either need to find the person who gives you the instructions or the right square of trees. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

As for what's in the Bunker, not a whole lot. You can get one of three items, all of which are really helpful only in the registered portion of the game. —Alorael, who wouldn't say that you miss much by not entering in the unregistered version of E3. A better idea would be to register and find the way in for yourself. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Jeff certainly won't do it, and he won't release the code for his games either. Thus, all signs point to highly unlikely. —Alorael, who will repeat the mantra that Spiderweb games run under Wine. Since he knows nothing about Linux or Wine, he'll just assume that it's true. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You can't get into the room in Erika's tower. You can get into the section of Ghikra that is closed off, and while it would be a spoiler to say how, it's quite obvious when you can. —Alorael, who will add that there is a room in Sulfras' lair that is as unreachable as Erika's. Both rooms are empty anyway, as those who use questionable means to get in discover. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The Adamantite Axe is, as far as we know, only in the editor. There's no way to get it in the game. —Alorael, who can say the same for Demonslayer and probably a few more items in E3. Maybe they were originally supposed to be used and just didn't make it in, or maybe they are just fun things in the editor. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
