I would like to mention that there is a volcano near Naples that erupts every 2,000 years called, Vesuvius that is ready to erup from now to 100 years from now. This Volcano is allso the historical volcano that took out the ancient city of Pompeji 2,000 years ago.Anyway I was wondering if anyone could give me more info on this volcano. -------------------- "I am Batman". Volcanos don't erupt in such a predictable way. If it might erupt 100 years from now, there's no way of knowing whether it'll really go off in 10 years or 500 years, or not erupt at all for millenia. Posts: 567 | Registered: Friday, October 5 2001 07:00 |

I can't actually tell you anything about the volcano itself, but I can tell you: It's spelled Pompeii. It also destroyed the nearby town of Herculaneum. Volcano is not usually capitalised unless it's the start of a sentence. (Sorry for being nitpicky...) Thank you, I was just watching a special on this particular volcano on the Discovery channel last night. And according to the Discovery Channel it's due to erupt. So take this up with the discovery channel. Not me. [ Monday, January 31, 2005 07:15: Message edited by: The Lord of Evil ] -------------------- "I am Batman". Batman. Well, if it's gonna erupt, it's gonna erupt. There's nothing we can do about it. Anyway, you can get a bunch of pictures and some information here. -------------------- -ben4808 For those who love to spam: CSM Forums RIFQ Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

I think Saunders's advice was meant more as a "don't try this at home" warning, anyway, considering some of the things one can see on that particular channel... -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

My cousin got scared out of his pants when I told him about "supervolcanoes" which errupt every 2 millionth year or something like that, and its about 2 million years since last time one errupted. Apparently these volcanoes are so freaking powerful they will exterminate all life on earth, kind of like a meteor would (black skies etc.). I saw that on Discovery, so I'm a little relieved now... I'm no expert on volcanoes, but I believe the risk is more of a statistical projection than a set mechanical buildup and release cycle. Major eruptions may come at approximately two million year intervals, but it's still like flipping coins and seeing how long it takes to get five heads in a row (not that this accurately reflects likelihood!). Since, to the best of my knowledge, it's not the same volcano that erupts cataclysmically every few million years, I definitely lean towards the statistical coincidence side of things. I'd also like to point out that the margin of error in volcano prediction with a cycle length of two million years is probably a few thousands years either way anyway. —Alorael, who will not wait with bated breath for the next literally world-shattering geological event. With the rate of human change, the Second Coming or virtual sterilization of the planet by nuclear attacks are more plausible threats to human society than volcanoes. Yes, wise words Alo, but it is actually the same volcano which erupts "every time", although it might be billions or zillions of years in between. It was a good year since I saw that program, so my memmory ain't too fresh. -------------------- 33111-CRUSADER-4849 Posts: 662 | Registered: Friday, September 13 2002 07:00 |

According to historical research, the sceintists think that Yellowstone is a about ready to erupt again too as far as the odds go. :/ [ Thursday, February 10, 2005 17:47: Message edited by: ben2 ] -------------------- -ben4808 For those who love to spam: CSM Forums RIFQ Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

That's not certain, though. It's also possible that the disturbances under Yellowstone could be due to the magma solidifying, in which case it might never erupt again. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Vesuvius is a really big volcano that may or may not erupt at some point in the relatively near future. There's also an even bigger volcano under Yellowstone National Park that may or may (EDIT: or, then again, may not) erupt at some point in the relatively near future. And rumor has it there're two of them, but the second one is very sensible so it doesn't like to be bothered. If it does indeed erupt, then perhaps we can use what such masterpieces like Dante's Peak and Volcano showed us about how to survive in such situations. One sure thing is that dogs won't have a problem if there's a pick up near by.
