That would be a step closer. Currently Spiderweb has a combination programmer and designer in one person, with some possible programming and design input from two others. The graphics and sound are all done by others freelance. There hasn't been any music since E2 unless you count the splash screen music, which has actually been very good.

Who's your favorite villain? in General

Satan: The poor Adversary gets a tough job and no appreciation for doing it. Then God stabs him in the back. He deserves a nod of recognition for his accidental villainy!

Morgoth: If your underlings are as evil as Sauron, you're one villainous villain.

Cardinal Richelieu: In fact and in fiction, he's the realpolitik mastermind from the time before realpolitik existed. Maybe not a villain per se, but certainly villified.

Lord Foul: Anyone who can pull off a name like that without being a joke is a true villain indeed. He also manages to be nearly as implied as Sauron.

Keyser Soze: An explanation isn't fair, but if you know Keyser Soze, you accept his villainy.

—Alorael, who can also list a bunch of dictators, both the forthright kind and the banana republic kind, some warlords, and the like from real life. He'd mention George Bush for the sake of those who enjoy blaming Dubya, but to be fair, even Bush at his worst is peanuts compared to the real villains of history.

If they have seen code, it's news to me. Corroboration?

It takes a dedicated beta tester to test before the product is in beta.

Or is Drakey an alpha tester?

The Ultimate "Favourite Game" Poll in General

More than a couple of people bought Geneforge, and I'd like to think that there is some interest in Nethergate, too. If there isn't, there should be!

—Alorael, who in fact believes that the poll itself has some interesting evidence. Geneforge is actually very popular, and Nethergate is no slouch.

For the record, nobody knows the number of any SDFs for any Avernum games.

My thoughts on hex editing and keygens... in General

Instead of sharing that name and password, people would probably just copy and paste the hex editing tutorial. In the end, while piracy is an unnecessary but inevitable evil, there's really no reason to make it easier.

—Alorael, who operates under the assumption that a few more people would register illegally if they could figure out how to in a different way. Maybe it's not true, but it's a risk.

Avernum question in The Avernum Trilogy

I've gotten much more utility out of Divinely Touched on fighters. The skill bonuses help everyone, but fighters get a bit more. Divine Aid is much more useful to the stabbers and meat shields than the back row characters.

—Alorael, who also likes to keep his characters' experience penalties balanced. Having characters all over the board in levels can be troublesome.

You can set the style and turn on or off avatars on many forums, most allow post counts to be set manually, and all would let custom titles be bestowed once again. I would miss the old threads more than the old forums, but this has a cohesive water droplet's chance in a vacuum of happening.

—Alorael, who has seen no signs of intentions of expending more time, energy, effort, or, God forbid, money on the forums from Spiderweb. That would be just a bit out of character.

For the countering view on Divinely Touched, I avoid it because its experience penalty is too harsh for the benefits it gives. You could buy those skill boosts yourself with the experience you'll lose by having the trait.

—Alorael, who has heard people claim that it is valuable for singletons. Since he doesn't play with a single character, he can't vouch for it or rant against it.

I've realized that the difference between sarcasm and earnest statements has become very small indeed.

I think this is more a problem with the internet in general than with Spiderweb in particular, but I think here the real lesson is that karma is meaningless, not that people are mean. People are mean, but you should really wait for a flamewar to draw that conclusion.

—Alorael, who is sorry to see someone driven away from the controlled chaos of General even if it is over something that isn't worth it.

It is a very obvious double meaning, but I think that my come from overexposure to Spiderweb and its environs.

Kel, I salute you for taking the bull by the horns, so to speak, and saying what had to be said, so to type.

Me, I'm going to steer clear of MM, Kel, and Marlenny for a while.

Congratulations, Ben! You're probably closer to a custom title than you'd like anyway.

Wouldn't an invisible city cause problems? I know perfect morality would abound and it wouldn't have to be so embarassing, but fumbling around to try to find the door and falling down the stairs on a regular basis would get old quickly.

Avernum question in The Avernum Trilogy
Law Bringer

I'm one of the Avernum fans, for the record.

My party is, in ratios similar to my Exile parties, a pair of fighters and a pair of casters, all custom. Both casters are, like yours, mages and priests. The fighters get the outdoorsy skill and tool use. I've played around with priest spell, but I've always thought that the skill points are best used elsewhere.

Anyone who casts spells, especially mages, benefits enormously from the Natural Mage trait. Warriors get good use out of Elite Warrior and Fast on Feet, but the former is significantly less useful to Slith characters and probably not worth the penalty. Other than that, you can play around and discover your own preferences.

—Alorael, who is more worried about the switch to Intel than whether or not the older Avernums, Nethergate, and the Exiles (particularly BoE) will be Carbonized. Since the new computers won't support Classic, those games may be completely inaccessible to anyone who buys a Mac in a few years. That leaves the best of the Spiderweb oeuvre to PCs only, which would be a shame.

You probably have noticed that those buttons correspond with portcullises on the lower level of the cave. Each portcullis leads to a separate area, and each area has a slime pool for you to destroy. If you don't find the pool and instead reach an area with a dead end and an obelisk, look for secret passages in the walls.

—Alorael, who can't remember what the obelisk says. Something in all caps and probably mocking, if he remembers correctly.

It worked slowly with Virtual PC, but that was several versions of SubTerra ago and several versions of VPC ago. I'd test it again, but I currently don't have any version of VPC that will run on my computer.

It's clearly apocryphal, because nobody has ever made the trains run on time.

—Alorael, who can only hope that the public transit system in heaven is better. According the Bible, though, the only transportation is probably walking.
