We have many meaningless conversational insertions, and I overuse all of them. I mean, you know, like, well, something like this. Pick someone you know well. Someone at least moderately articulate. Strike up a conversation, and then in the middle start counting instances of the word "like." I'm often surprised. It's not only a non-lexical word, it's no longer even a consciously processed word. When I replay speech in my head, the likes are edited out. —Alorael, who wonders if this is part of the reason scripted conversations sound off even when they're well written. They're got all the content but the blank noise is missing. Could there be a reason that conversation has introns along with exons, and what exactly is communicated by non-coding words? A4's AP system borrows more from Geneforge than from previous Avernums. You can move a little bit and attack or move a lot and not attack. I like it that way. Like so many other little things, it means you get more interesting tactics choices, and it makes archery interesting. —Alorael, who also is always puzzled by the fact that you can move three steps and attack with an unencumbered character but you can't attack and then back away. I'd welcome you back, but we all know that you never left at all. In fact, you never said anything about any absence, and anyone who says otherwise needs an implant check. —Alorael, who would instead like to make admiring comments about the wonderfully inspirational post Icshi made on the 27th. The true way of faith is to retroactively make December 20 a holiday. Let's call it Icefallmas. Not only is it now a holiday, it now always was a holiday and we celebrated it devotedly every single year. —Alorael, who distinctly remembers the celebrations. Two years ago the Bnidkappy (very traditional Icefalmas dish) was to die for. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Unlike portals, the pylons apparently cause no sensation of being violently disassembled and then carelessly reassembled on arrival and do not evoke sensations of colors never meant to be perceived. Riding a worg is like riding a dog. A Great Dane, for example. Surely there are Great Danes if there are worgs! —Alorael, who cannot imagine that all the dogs on and under Ermarian are small, red, and yappy. I have noticed but cannot swear to a propensity for Lightning Spray to hit additional targets farther from the caster more than closer targets. —Alorael, who wouldn't mind an arrow spell or two. They were nice to have sometimes in Exile. Area spells that fry friendly as well as hostiles added some more interesting decisions too, especially when in A4 you can easily take out your own tough fighters with the damage you dish out regularly via caster. English spelling is absurd. We borrow, butcher, change at random, and do weird things to our written language. It doesn't bother me too much as a native speaker, but I can see see why a change would be good. It even worked for German, although the situation isn't exactly the same. On the other hand, I can't imagine puzzling through the grotesque transformation of English as someone raised reading it the way it is now. If we could all switch at once, it might work, but I think the overwhelming pressure of actually having to communicate dictates the known evil. I'm not enough of a linguist to opine on the decline and fall of the English language, except that I think that what seems to be the suppression of intelligent-sounding speech is a shame. The loss of standardization is something I don't like on principle, although I don't see any great doom coming from it. Some contend otherwise, and while I don't agree, I do like English with all of its (not it's) P's and Q's and subjects and objects in the right places. —Alorael, who is an unabashed linguistic snob except for the incorrect gender-neutral singular they. Saying only "he" or "she" seems wrong, saying "he or she" seems long-winded and pretentious, and saying "they" doesn't really hurt anyone except those who might be patiently waiting at the bottom of the slippery slope, their (plural) faces screwed up in horror at the split infinitive. Spiderweb's sets do not work like common sets. For example, Drakey = everybody but everybody != Drakey. This is accepted wisdom. —Alorael, who saw a cat walking on its hind legs today. It wasn't a nephil. It was his cat learning a new trick, apparently. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Some animal are more domesticable than others. Also, I can see several problems with riding lizards. Aren't they too low to the ground for your legs? Wouldn't they eat your legs anyway? If the only way to get your beast of burden to follow you is to entice it with your own sweet flesh, maybe riding on it would be a frustrating experience. —Alorael, who would rather ride pylons anyway. I'm not sure what measurement was used to declare the demo 1/5 of the game. It's possible by outdoor sections, although I still doubt it. It's definitely not at all true by time spent doing stuff. The demo is the least exciting part of the game. —Alorael, who can say more specifically that Avernum does have its space on the surface, and that a few non-Avernites are in Avernum for the short-term. A transportation breakdown gives the pseudo-medieval world a taste of the 20th century. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Some Avernites are on the surface and some loyal surfacelings are living in Avernum. Travel between the Empire and Avernum seems to be pretty open most of the time. —Alorael, who wouldn't look too hard at the time line. Some NPCs seem to have aged decades, but others haven't. A4 is set approximately a few decades after A3, give or take a few decades. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I don't think Spiderweb handles pre-orders, and I can't see why you'd really want to. It's not cheaper to order the two together. I'd get Geneforge 3 now and wait for A4. —Alorael, who would play the demo, to, ust in case you find you can't stand turn-based movement. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I think ADoS's comment was on the fact that Spiderweb is not the place to complain about graphics. If you like Spiderweb's games, which Argh apparently does, you can't really talk pretty pictures. ADoS has made graphics for BoA. —Alorael, who can think of another reason not to download SubTerra. Argh has A4, so he must have a Mac. Unless he also has a PC or Virtual PC, he can't play SubTerra anyway. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Does armor always apply the largest percentage first (Take away 40% of damage, then 20% of remainder, then 5% of the remainder of that) or does the order depend on the type of item (first armor, then shield, then boots)? —Alorael, who will take advantage of having the man himself checking in while he can.
