I read the books and saw the movie (the one that had Marvin's head huge and spherical?). They were both good works, but related only as if the script writer and Adams had been given the same rough concept and worked independently. Douglas Adams had dry witty humor, which you expect in a comedy. The movie had Zaphod, Ford and Arthur heroically saving Trillian from an ugly death, which you expect from a movie. Years ago, I went ballistic at Peter Jackson's modifications to Tolkien's epic, but I understand now: The media are just different. A one-for-one transposition just isn't possible, just like a word-for-word translation. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Drakefyre, you must now ban yourself for use of a secondary account! Also, "could care less" is one of the most illogical idioms I know. I suspect it was a similar outbreak to my "Hail Dikiyoba and Cthulhu" fit, except more severe. Remember that the stablest people here have given their sanity to the turtle. May I just add that Project Dikiyoba is the coolest name for any scenario project I have ever seen. Also that turning that script into a scenario would be kind of difficult. Well of Souls isn't that much better however - minus losing items when killed (but plus loading *some* experience) and minus the player-to-player trading system that is half the fun of Runescape. Oh, and of course it can't be omitted that the player community is about twice as mature on average (at least on the servers I used to play in). Plus the possibility of hosting your own server and creating your own world. Tied. At least WoS doesn't cripple the game for free accounts. -- Unless by WoS you meant another game than Well of Souls, in which case just ignore this and my bad taste in MMORPGs. :P -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Uh, selling items on Runescape, romantic? Some people here should call Dr. Freud... your starved libidos may be sending you strange signals. :P Well, yes. Indeed, and it is pretty much exactly what happened here and with MoS. The reason some pages are still there is because UBB caches stuff in a weird way. -- Your school uses UBB? The obvious path to success is not to release the technology until you have also discovered a failsafe defence, and then keep the lid on the defence until you have discovered a way to bypass the defence. This character string didn't occur in Mountain of Shadows. The common factor, however, is the sheer volume of text. -- As for a Unicode character that crashes browsers... only a short while from the technology allowing you to stab people in the face over the internet (which is going to make its inventor very rich indeed...) -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. RC had a unicode character in his signature that caused one person's browser to crash. There is also a unicode character that reverses the text that follows (until the next paragraph or linebreak, iirc). It was highly fashionable back in the day. It doesn't work in all browsers. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. That's against the rules of this thread, Spring! This topic may be bumped only when you have something to say - even if posts have to be half a year apart (unless a purge is looming, of course). If it were different, why, just any idiot could keep this thread at the top, and it would soon become no more than an imitation of TM's moniker topic! Unfortunately, I have nothing more to say except that I haven't played Escape Velocity in far, far too long a time. The marvel of UBB is that it works sometimes... Edit: That, and that it cost several hundred dollars when it was first sold, and people bought it. I said that, but I can't remember saying it on Polaris. Ah well, maybe I did. -- I just finished reading Louis McMaster Bujold's Cordelia's Honor, which is the first book of the Barrayar Cycle (which I'd read one book of earlier). Space opera, and I rather like it. Partly because its plot manages to avoid being "epic" (as in Star Wars) while still being captivating. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead.
