There was a security hole that allowed people to get GF4. He discovered it and posted it on the forums.

Dikiyoba recently finished reading The Rivers of Zadaa by D. J. MacHale. Dikiyoba thought it was good but Dikiyoba was really bored at the time.

Well, better to have a huge battle at the end of the book for no other purpose but to have a huge battle at the end of the book, than a book that exists for no other purpose but to have a huge battle at the end of it. Not much better, admittedly.

Next on my reading list: Cryptonomicon, by Neal Stephenson and Jennifer Government, by Max Barry.

I haven't set it up myself (Logalot did that) but the administration interface is smooth and powerful.

One thing I haven't yet seen anywhere else is the occasional AJAX functionality that allows many changes to be made without leaving the page - you can edit a post directly in the topic without loading a form; you can edit the topic title or lock the topic in the forum view; you can even post a topic that opens and closes at a specific time.

Another nice part is the support for custom bb code. For example, you can make [wiki]Article[/wiki] display a Wikipedia link.

As for the admin panel itself, the biggest drawback is that the organization isn't intuitive. The sections are "Management", "Look & Feel", "Tools & Settings" and "Administration". While Look & Feel obviously covers skins and emoticons, it isn't always clear where you'll find a setting in one of the other three. Once you get used to it, however, it's the single best panel I've ever seen in my life.

(Of course, I haven't seen UBB. But then, Drakey hasn't seen IPB. :P )

I actually have to think hard to remember any trouble I've had with the new version. o_O

If both are free: Between IPB and phpBB, choose IPB. IPB's biggest drawback compared to phpBB is its high cost.

Be sure to verify that the versions they use are up to date, however - compare to the sites at http://www.phpbb.com and http://www.invisionpower.com .

Early versions of phpBB are infamous for their state-of-the-art security holes, and an exploit was recently found for old versions of IPB that shut Polaris down for several weeks while we were waiting for the upgrade.

I screwed in an extra 256 MB chip into my laptop to give it a total of 512 MB RAM. Think that was about half a year ago or more.

This laptop is about to have its second birthday. It's a Samsung V25. 1.3 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, and a 30 GB hard drive (supplemented by a Targa DataBox 300 GB external hard drive). Two years ago it was pretty good, though not state of the art. Failing sudden breakdowns (NO, Mr. Murphy!) I suppose I can use it for another 3 years before I look around for a new one, or sooner if I can afford it. I might get a desktop computer instead though - this computer will be good enough for mobile use any time.

Mountain of Shadows RP: the sequel in General

Melora turned around to the other side. Her back sent an unpleasant tingle up her spine as it pressed against the rough stone floor.

She had been lying on the tunnel floor for no more than a few minutes, but it already seemed like hours for her. She was trying to empty her thoughts, to focus on the void within her mind where she knew the Shadow still lurked.

The passage was utterly dark even for her heat-sensing eyes; only her breath streamed glowing clouds of warmth, lighting up patches of the rock as it warmed up the walls and the ceiling. Her eyes screwed shut against even this low light, she was utterly alone within the chasms of her imagination and her memories, reaching back through the centuries.

------------------------------------------

The ground vibrates. Dunes shift, the dry sand flowing like water. A low rumble, then a hum, as the age-old stone gate slowly slides open. Darkness and the rotten stench of dead aeons await behind it, but she strides in with confidence.

---

The doleful cry of the Shantak, echoing over the frozen wastes, speaking of loneliness and despair. Tekeleeee Leee! Tekeleeee Leee!

---

Her skin is scorched in the dull red glow of the fiery streams beneath her. She hastens through the cavern, hoping to reach her goal before the sulphurous fumes overwhelm her. A stagnant pool lies ahead, slimy and reeking of death, but she bathes her blistering feet in it without heed.

---

Walking through darkness - utter darkness, where the cold air extinguishes even her own heat. A sound in the distance. Drums in the deep, sounding through tons of rock. As they get louder, she recognizes a rhythm. There are pipes, blowing a discordant, strident melody. The darkness seems to get even deeper. She rounds a corner and---

It was back. She sat up, then stood, suddenly back in the tunnel beneath the mountain of shadows. Her mind was clear, her vision and hearing infinitely sharper. She turned around from the passage's blocked end and towards the small hole that was still open, awaiting her. It looked no more inviting than it had when it had first appeared. It could not have looked less so if the words "Death Trap" had been emblazoned on a sign next to it. But her doubts had blown away like ashes on a fiery wind.

We meet on my ground, Orloki. Even in the heart of your mountain. Just wait.

She squeezed through the hole.

OOC: Gnosis can still contact her. If he does, he'll notice that her mind has changed, but he can't immediately recognize why.

Given that you must mean this version of UBB, I wonder how a board that can best be compared to a road accident can have an admin panel that good. Instable? Check. Slow, unreliable search? Check. Eats posts and topics? Check.

Was the only competent coder assigned to the admin interface? :P

I didn't rearrange or cross out letters for this. Somehow, you can "feel" that a certain name contains these letters. Of course, you can't be entirely sure until you test it, but since there are only so few possibilities to choose from that doesn't matter.

Troll Mover God? I don't get this one. This was your displayed name last month, wasn't it?

The closest I can get from "Tom Marvolo Riddle" is "Troll Mover Did Mao". Which is amusing too, but on the wrong track.

If you use Firefox, you can now install a plugin for the site's search function in that little search box in the top right corner.

The search function is quite useful since it doesn't just search the displayed name, but also the other profile fields like homepage url, title and location.

Hint: To search in a month other than the current one, enter a search term like this: "2005-07|your search terms" :)

But at the critical moment, something will distract the guard and they will forget to poke one specific corner of the hay. Murphy's and the law of protagonists predict that the entire cast of heroes has managed to cram into that corner.

--

Polaris runs IPB. IPB is an extremely good BBS, and it outperforms phpBB in pretty much every category. It is also 70$. phpBB is free, and it is good as well.

I've also heard good things about SMF and punBB (both free). vBulletin is powerful but expensive. I shouldn't judge UBB by its stone-age version, but it doesn't seem to be any good. Lastly, if you want to drive a rusty nail through your eyes but don't have one handy, use ezboard.

Finally, if you are looking for a forum system, this page is your friend.
