If a banning is like a gas well, then people like Shotts, Ed and EraserHead are natural founts of flatulence. :P That said, there have been a couple of bannings that made people sympathize with the victims. Ash Lael most famously, TM most recently, and Djur (and someone else*) back in days of yore. *I remember someone posted a nasty word and got banned, and Djur then defended him with a dictionary definition, and got banned too. I don't remember who the first one was. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Mh. After spending a few years online, this way of communication has gained some sense of tangibility to me. I definitely try to be as polite online as offline... (Well, part of the reason is that it will end up eternally stored on Google a week later. Makes you very, very polite.) -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Funny, I assumed it was an attraction to, uh, people named Sara? But no, that would be Saraphilia. Yes - I am currently allowed to upload 200 GB and transfer 2 TB each month, for about 4$ (normally 8$; it's a promotional discount). They put in a free year of domain registration, and after that it will be 15$ a year. That's pretty much the normal price for having a name registered, it can get cheaper in bulk though. --- Also, third-party registrars: A DNS lookup is made up of two parts: First, the name is searched in the central registry, which then returns the IP address of a name server. When this name server is queried, it returns the IP of the webserver the request should go to. The separate registrar doesn't actually "host" anything for you. They simply take care of dealing with the official registrars to make sure your domain is listed with the name server IP you specify. This name server is owned by your host, who takes it from there. --- The advantage is flexibility. If your host does both the hosting and registering, they have a monopolistic interest in keeping you "hostage" by refusing to let you use your registered domain name with another host, or point a domain name registered elsewhere at their servers. This is pretty common, too - ask Tyranicus; it's why Shadow Vale is not at shadowvale.net anymore. If each is provided separately, each can be changed with less hassle, since they don't keep you shackled. --- However, it's not strictly necessary - these days, most hosts act as registrars to provide a "one-stop shop", and do it fairly well. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Yay4Tolkien. -- I made up my name ("Arancaytar") as a sort of fantasy hero/alter ego when I was 14 or so. I first used it as a forum name in April 2003, and only really started to identify with it around summer. Concerning etymology, the only meanings I came up with were invented after the fact. The first one was something like "First Wandering Keeper" in a self-concocted lingo; I noticed other meanings in other languages. In an elvish language called Styrash (from Santharia), it could be translated as "Wandering Mountain Village" or, more sanely, "One who goes to the mountain village". In Novah, it means "Rippling Plane Jewel" or something similar. Someone once told me it means "King of Lies" in Quenya, and they've got something there, although it's not quite right: "aran" is indeed king, and "caita" is a verb that means "to lie" - but as in "to lie in darkness" (caita mornie), not "to tell falsehoods". So it might be "the Reclining King" or "the Located King". Someone else said it indicated my role in a hidden Nazi conspiracy because it contained the word "Aryan". Yet someone else accused me of being an Aaron Carter fanboy. His liver was very tasty with some fava beans and a nice chianti. --- Before I used it, amazingly, I didn't have any primary online name. I either called myself Chris (or even by my full name) or some LotR character (usually Sméagol or Aragorn). I still have an email address registered to one "elven-mage", incidentally. Um. --- Current handle? When it comes to RPGs, I identify with the caster, and most of my RP characters are wizards. Plus, I'm a technomancer. Just ask around. :) [ Sunday, February 04, 2007 14:58: Message edited by: The Sorcerer ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Happy birthday! I'm sure I still had a cake here somewhere... got it. It's a bit over two years old now, the colors are awful and one candle is missing, but the alternative was to go on a Google Image search again. :P I can't contribute much in the way of bad movies... somehow I manage to see only movies I end up liking. So I'm confined to yakking about how Peter Jackson ruined LotR. I haven't even watched more than one episode of StarWars, so I can't slam George Lucas either. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast.
