Which there is not.

How to kill Rentar-Ihrno:

1. Open scenario editor.
2. Place Rentar-Ihrno in the starting town. (You may have to make a new monster type, unlike Erika I can't find her in the docs.)
3. Start the game.
4. KILLKILLKILL
5. Repeat if necessary.

No, I don't have issues with that evil Vahnatai monster. Why do you ask?

I compared the IPs as soon as I saw the two posts. No match.

Posting with the wrong account has been my embarassing downfall a couple of times. Well, before I became a mod. :P

Without verifying it at Wikipedia, I'd say the original "bots" generated messages in IRC channels (though Usenet could have beaten it there). They greet people, enforce registered nicks, and can even reply to requests, like an encyclopedia.

Bot is a blanket term that covers both programs that act and those that only gather information, but the latter are more commonly known as "spiders".

In games, bots can either be computer-generated opponents (NPCs) or programs written by enterprising players who don't want to waste hours on tedious grinding. Most administrators don't look kindly on them.

(I was going to have EndeavorBot post this, but then I realized it would have taken far too long and could have just as well been done by me logging into to his account, so it didn't make a difference anyway.)

And Upon Mars is from France.

All clear. :)

It's interesting - and a bit disappointing, and certainly disturbing - to see several members, generally coherent and in high standing here, engage in what is to productive debate as vigorous application of self is to... okay, bad analogy.

Personally, I hope that the original topic of the thread will somehow come forth again. That's really the only reason why it remains open.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6388651.stm

Yet another politician falls victim to the complex mechanism of the telescope and its lens caps.

IMAGE(http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42604000/jpg/_42604489_peretz_ap203.jpg)

In this image, the Israeli Defence Minister repeats the mistake already made once by George Bush and Ariel Sharon, forgetting to remove the lens caps while peering through the glass (repeatedly). Two cases may be coincidence - but three?

IMAGE(http://www.cdcarts.org/becoming/assetts/bush_binoculars_2.jpg)

Are all world leaders secretly blind? Or does the job requirement to be a great visionary equip them with X-Ray vision, so they can look through the caps as if they weren't there?

Make up your explanation...

Same for A4. This was a breeze - the "town gate insta-resurrection and insta-healing" is like the editor. And bows with infinite arrows?

I've come to playing with a non-mage party on Torment, but it's not particularly tough, still. Perhaps when I have more time I'll see if I can beat it with a singleton. That should eliminate the resurrection advantage from towns, since the game ends with a single death.

I'd say the concept of not harming (and supporting, where possible) fellow beings of our species can be established as an absolute - not an absolute everyone will follow, but at least one that is separate from all religions and states, and we can therefore all relate to as members of the same species.

(As for aliens, let's not get sucked into hypothetical debates and for now assume that humans have the monopoly on complex articulate intelligence.)

The opposite concept to the one above is to support, above all, yourself. This doesn't necessarily involve being a jerkwad to others; it means to behave appropriately for the current situation to get the maximum possible benefit for oneself.

Now all we need to do is show that one of these concepts should, ultimately, be followed. Arguments that support one over the other, and that can actually be applied to everyone.

Personally, this is where I'm stuck... It's like a giant, complex game of Prisoner's Dilemma.

Consciously starting a topic in order to improve the forum is at least a start. Perhaps with a bit of practice, we can eventually fall back into a pattern that makes these topics spring up "on their own", without someone thinking "we need a smart debate in here to ward off decadence". But for now, the former is enough.

There's already someone scrutinizing every single post you make, evaluating its quality, and judging you by it. They're called "other members". :P

What I'm envisioning is more an advanced karma/tagging system - if I could actually build machines that could accurately judge text content on their own, I'd be on some lovely private Pacific island writing my next best-selling scientific textbook instead of posting here. :P

But as I said, even the former is only pipe-dreaming right now.

My little homunculus said to tell you he misses you all as well, but agrees with me that his current occupation may not be in the best interests of this forum, and would rather watch this place from afar than interfere directly with it. He added something about prime directives; I don't know, I never watched Star Trek myself really.

He did say he'd be glad to return if he could find a way to contribute less harmfully to the community - say, by calculating statistics that actually valued worthwhile posts rather than spam, aggregating by thread subjects, topic derailment, wordcount/content per posts or something like that. But since these things are far in the future for our young bot, he says he'll wait for the time being.

We're all winning. I think.

Honestly, my speculation on "end times" (which seems to have inspired a bandwagon) was directed more at "end of an age". So it's not "everything" that's shutting down, it's just things that are turning this board into a parody of itself.

In Dikiyoba's case, already announcing that there will be no sequel is enough, since the ouroborosis there lies in having the current script be referenced by the current membership, and in turn referencing it. Once the script is finished, and closed, it will become just another piece of Spiderweb art. No more self-reference.

Alex: Leave him to his delusions, I'd say. As long as he can't distinguish between oldbies and newbies, he doesn't know the structure of Spiderweb; until he does, his precious plans of domination are pretty much doomed.

Eph, Randomizer: Of course the end of the stats won't stop spam. But they were an essential asset of the school of thought that glorified spam, so at least one corner-stone of posts for posts' sake is close to toppling.
