Yet another politician falls victim to the complex mechanism of the telescope and its lens caps.

IMAGE(http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42604000/jpg/_42604489_peretz_ap203.jpg)

In this image, the Israeli Defence Minister repeats the mistake already made once by George Bush and Ariel Sharon, forgetting to remove the lens caps while peering through the glass (repeatedly). Two cases may be coincidence - but three?

Are all world leaders secretly blind? Or does the job requirement to be a great visionary equip them with X-Ray vision, so they can look through the caps as if they weren't there?

Make up your explanation...

They go to militay terrain or a place where thier army is fighting, so yeah, they will stand at a great distance looking at the soldiers killing themselves for real and in training.

I would like to do that too, but I don't have the privilege.

But if you did, you'd take the caps off, wouldn't you?

Oh my god, how stupid...

Yes, I would take them off. I think that this probably says something, either about the IQ of our leaders, or the level in which they are spoiled and expect the lens capes to have been taken off for them.

Not if it involved either looking at the picture or reading your post. (Sorry Thralni, but you looked like an idiot there. Glad you bothered to check it.)

Edit - Actually, it may be more along the lines of "What leader would willingly hand over a pair of binoculars to an aide and complain that they can't make them work?"

They're obviously not actually looking at anything anyway; they're just being photographed with binoculars because it makes them look like hardcore military men or something. The caps still kinda spoil the effect, though.

Would you believe it's the Emperor's New Binoculars?

Funny binocular factoid that I don't really understand (though I absolutely should):

The best binoculars have no focus knob. You can adjust one eyepiece to correct for your individual eye asymmetry, but there is no rolling cylinder control to refocus the instrument as you look at nearer and farther things. Instead, the natural refocusing of your own eyes does all you need, just as when you're not using binoculars. I've used binoculars like these, and they do work just this way. It's very nice.

So, why do cheaper binoculars need to be focused, and why do the better ones not?

You see, it's the same thing as a pirate captain with a spy glass.

Wow. Just wow.

Um... I always kind of wondered how folks like 'Dubya can look at their approval ratings and not really see anything, though.

Though in that specific case, the reason that he can look at his approval rating and not see anything is that there is hardly any approval there to see. :P

Actually, I think there's a reason these politicians are out of touch with reality so often. I'm sure some kind aide has painted the insides of those lens covers with a helpful picture. Something like this:

IMAGE(http://www.schwimmerlegal.com/smiley.jpg)

—Alorael, who also wouldn't be surprised if there were two sets of binoculars, one with rose-tinted lenses and one with lenses tinted with whatever shade denotes paranoid nationalism.

It's turqoise, Alo.

Seriously though (who was joking?), perhaps they're keeping the lens caps on so that they can blindly make poor policies, and then blame it on "not being able to see all the outcomes".

Dubya and our Tone got away with it.

Bush probably thinks that's what he's supposed to see. See no evil.

It's like Ronald Reagan trying to hear a question over the helicopter running next to him. It's just for show.
