Unfortunately, I can only offer my experience from the appendectomy perspective.

I can tell you that my classmates (this was back in first grade in elementary school) sent me a bunch of pictures and (memory's getting hazy at this point), a girl I think I liked sent me some chocolate, which I was able to eat a couple of days later.

This surgery sounds more complicated than mine (I didn't need an IV afterward) even though they later told me I could have been dead within a week without the operation. So I'm not sure whether the same applies.

However, chocolate doesn't expire quickly, so it's not such a faux-pas to give that. Also, you don't need to have a functioning digestive tract to appreciate flowers.

Finally, lying for several days in a hospital room with nobody (or worse, other people who are even sicker) for company isn't much fun. A longer visit, as already mentioned, is in order and would probably be appreciated. :)

Yes, it's intended as a parody on signature jokes as well as a kind of "emperor's new clothes" reference (you can't react without becoming the target). And on top of it all, it is *itself* a signature joke. Oh, the delightful meta-meta-signature! :P

That said, I do hope it was recognized as a joke...

The rescuers ask about the buildings. "Oh, this is my house," the Dutchman replies. "It's a nice house, built it myself. That over there is my church. I'm very happy with it."

"What about that building over there?" one of the rescuers ask.

"Oh, that," the Dutchman says. "That's the church I used to go to."

A joke about denomination? I thought the Irish were always at the butt-end of those...

That's a new idiom for me. Does it mean anything more specific than a generic positive connotation?

—Alorael, who couldn't find anything more useful with Google except Cockney rhyming slang that didn't really fit.

Behold the amazing work of Disney (and the exact lyrics).

No, I never actually heard it. I picked up the idiom from someone else. :P

Edit: Wait, not true. Since then, I did hear it once. In an obscure radio stream.

Wow. Sure, not all of SW's games are the bubbles, but the Poison Control Center? Surely they're not that bad.

Then again... Homeland.

I recently got my Exile Trilogy CD shipped, and would you imagine there's that crud on it? On my beautiful CD?

Needless to say, I was compelled to start it immediately to re-experience the horror of hunting snakes for 1gp per skin in a badly lit forest. At least this time, a programming error prevented all sprites from showing, and I had to fight with permanent invisibility.

In May 2003, Avernum 3 wouldn't run on my Windows NT computer without showering me in error messages. So I went to Tech Support and started that topic.

Fortunately, since then I've switched to XP (and am currently in the process of switching to OpenSolaris), and haven't had the problem since.

Of course it's possible - hell, by now I might be able to program such a thing (given lots of time). But clearly, this would have to be made from scratch, and so it would be just as easy to invent a new engine as trying to copy Jeff's.

Disregarding the technique of illegally decompiling it, of course.

There is no way you can implement Counterstrike in anything resembling the Avernum engine and make it good. It brings to mind QuakeHack.

That said, it would be an interesting project to try to make a MUD game based on the Avernum engine. However, it is severely hampered by the fact that (and for goodness' sake, write this down folks, so you don't need to ask again) Avernum isn't open-source and won't be for the forseeable time. And Jeff himself has said he won't write it.

He's also said he won't make Avernum 4 or Nethergate 2, but sequels fit his business model. Releasing a MUD isn't - he'd need servers, new licensing schemes, different shareware mechanisms, and deep pockets.
