Calm down. You are obviously very distressed. I am afraid you are delusional and might hurt yourself if you're not careful. Badly.

Let's just talk about this in private. Say, in that alley over there...

For some reason, that's hilarious.

People leave for lots of reasons: they become too busy in RL to post here, they get bored and move on, they get banned, they get abducted by aliens, and so on.

Dikiyoba.

I was about to say that.

Then again, it always amused TM and Alec when people called me an oldbie after I'd hardly been here a year. :P

Yes, "www2" is ugly. It may go eventually; for now it keeps our old Google cache alive.

Also check the relevant announcement topic:

No, I didn't mess with the topic numbers to pull this off. Let's just take it as a good omen.

Well, it's good practice to still acknowledge www while the less techy people are adjusting - of course it's best to redirect it to the URL without the www immediately to give them a nudge.

Having seen this in a couple of cases, I'd just like to make a brief general announcement.

Concerning "www." in URLs

"www." comes from a time when the web was very new. Back then, domain names were hard to come by, and most of them did not point to http servers. Instead, they were either for other things - file storage, news or mail servers - or complete organizations (hence "domain") that offered several of these things (which would result in names like mail.domain.com, news.domain.com, ftp.domain.com...).

So when the World Wide Web appeared, the way to implement it on current domains was to add a new subdomain on the current one: www.domain.com. The www indicated that this was a "web server" which could be reached with a "browser".

The reason for different names was also that each service would be reached with a different protocol, and if you tried to send a website request to a mail server, it would cause errors.

In the past two decades, the www has expanded to become the most popular aspect of the internet, and most domain names these days are primarily for websites; or even exclusively.

Also, it has become good practice to host different services on the same name (take "mail.google.com", which is both a mail and a web server), because the server will know which protocol to use from the port. Port 80 is for http, port 25 for sending mails.

This means "www." has absolutely no purpose anymore, and domains should not require it (unless they are one of those big organizations and do have a lot of servers under their domain name - and even then port 80 should ideally be redirected to the web server).

----

Therefore, x.ermarian.net sites will never have "www" preceding them. Trying to reach them over www .x.ermarian.net will work of course, but it will only redirect to x.ermarian.net.

----

Thank you. For more information, refer to no-www.org. :)

Edit: The only other reason to use the www. is that UBB will turn it into a link. :P

And this gets rooted so deeply? Because I saw a similar reaction on Polaris once - google cache.

Around here, it's acknowledged as something underhanded and against the rules, but insinuating someone did it doesn't get a reaction as if you'd accused them of murder or something. :P

And I have my personal anti-favorite in the list I mentioned, too - Joomla. I just spouted names of popular CMS. (Although even then I didn't stoop to the trash that is Mambo...)

I can't say anything about Moodle and Plone, personally, having never seen them in action. Nanowrimo does fairly well with Xoops, but I haven't seen the admin panel. Typo3 is powerful, but you're going to spend half a year learning how to use it.

Hence, Drupal :P

Okay, I think I can lower the defcon level. Logs still don't show any IP from here - even on the mentioned site -, and even if he were sneaky, I'd have heard from him by now. There's only one reason to collect information: To be able to call me to his office for a very embarassing discussion, and that immediately.

If it hasn't happened yet, it won't. Blog and Network are back.

I'm just old enough to remember messing around with floppies and having to cram images for my presentation into 1.3 Megs. Removing color channels, one at a time, cropping just those 5 extra pixels on the margin, shrinking another 10%... and finally, it fits!

Back in those days, we didn't have no fancy flash memory, no sirree, we used tiny magnetic media or messed around with CD-ROMs, and we bleedin' LIKED it!

On a related note, I just realized that Overlord Rule #99 is now outdated:

quote:
Any data file of crucial importance will be padded to 1.45Mb in size.
Unless we are going to assume that only the villains use cool technology like monster USB drives with >6GB (and an overlord never assumes), it's time to ditch this one.

Maybe the major record labels could serve as good examples for other evil overlords with their DRM and rootkits. :P

-------------------------

On a less related note, a few observations have led me to a hypothesis:

Is it true that "plagiarism" has a stigma in American culture that is even worse than "theft" or "felony"? It's certainly a lot worse than mere "copyright violation" or "piracy"...

Most webcomics use CMS systems (I know, so what? ...) for their websites to make this more easy. Depending on expertise, some of them code their own (see Userfriendly) and some outsource all the maintenance.

I'm sure Drupal or Joomla could be set up for this, I've seen Moodle and Xoops used for it, and Plone is probably not bad either. But I only know Drupal, personally. :P A week or two ago, I said I was trying out something like this (Drupal + integrated Gallery2), but it turned out to be more tricky than I thought, and now I have exams. So it'll take a while.

Web hosting suggestions? in General

I'd recommend Dreamhost (for which I have absolutely no ulterior motive, not even that I get a referral bonus :P ), but for these requirements it would be overkill.

I'm not sure there even is still a premium host that offers non-PHP plans...

In any case, with no other special requirements, the deciding factor will probably the price... what is he currently paying or planning to pay?

Edit: Wait, there's one thing. If the only premium feature he needs is domain hosting - does he have a third-party registrar already, or is the host the registrar?

Full hosting plans are far bigger than this, but there are resellers who offer smaller plans. They usually don't offer domain registration, but if the domain is already registered somewhere else, just hosting it would probably be no trouble.

Cooler heads are prevailing, especially since a study of my server logs hasn't yet turned up his IP address - not even on the site I did give him.

So the sites that are of general use (stuff, ppp, endeavor, irc, polaris, feeds) are back up. Blog and the Nanowiki (two sites I know where I ranted) are still down.

*tippity-type*

And for the time being, the admin of the Network is known as...
Chris! :)

(He can still find a lot of stuff just by googling for Ermarian, but paranoia carries me only so far. Even if this thread comes up top.)
