I would be less afraid of blatant Constitution Vandalism than sneaky edits that somehow go unnoticed - inserting "under God" or "but some are more equal than others" in certain key locations.

Well, I finished it this morning between 6 and 7 am (after staying up all night...). Some loose ends, though, which I will have to read the book again for.

For example, I'm pretty sure that Enoch Root dies during surgery somewhere in Northern Europe (Finland or Sweden) after a chestwound, moments after marrying Julieta (for passport reasons).

So who's the Enoch Root who's dogging Randy? He insinuates several times that he was personally around at the time when Goto Dengo (the only other person who is in both the WW2 and the modern setting) buried his treasure. And his son (or his son with 33% likelihood) doesn't share his name.

Or is "Enoch Root" a code name for someone with a certain position in S.E.?

(By the way, I have to say it's the first book that I've noticed that contained the words "Polaris", "weather balloon", "conspiracy" and "New World Order". Kudos.)

Edit: Oh wait. Wizard. The only sci-fi/fantasy guy in the book, you called him.

I am roughly 19.5 years old. More exact figures, to the day, can be found on my endeavor profile (and that of anyone else who has their birthday entered).

The fallacy of a lot of criticism of Wikipedia is that since it is unfit as a source in a research paper, it must be inaccurate and untrustworthy.

The reason why it is not references is not that this is what a bunch of anonymous people typed up, but that it is derived from other sources. Most scientific articles on Wikipedia are now footnoted with references - or are tagged with the note that the article needs further references for some claims. It is a second-hand source.

That, in turn, means that all reliable information it contains can be traced back to other, harder-to-find sources, which Wikipedia digests and summarizes. The proper way to use Wikipedia in research is to look up the article, get a basic grasp of the concept, then look up the references and use those as actual sources.

So no, the academic content of Wikipedia isn't unreliable. It is just that it is condensed information which can be found in more detail at the original source.

Links on punctuation = spam. Sorry, but that's the way it is. We get them at Polaris occasionally, also asking technical questions. It seems to work as a disguise pretty nicely.

That, or he was asking for help, but couldn't resist trying to spam his site (twice, no less). Moot point, however, since the site is gone - pulled for violating anti-spam TOS?

I'm back to reading Cryptonomicon, which is one monster of a book. It's been a long time since I had a book I didn't finish within one week - let alone more than half a year.

Neal Stephenson's sci-fi is among the best I've seen so far, although in a different way than the other two (Asimov and Adams) that I like that much. Well, it's not actually sci-fi - it's so realistic. But the entire book is centered both on science and technology, and it manages to pull that off without being either a dull textbook or spewing nonsense about computers and aliens.

Also, Alorael, since you apparently read it already: Could you give me a spoiler and tell me if root@eruditorum.org is somehow related to Enoch Root? I got that idea after the former said he was "a man of the cloth", and frankly, a "root" pun is something I wouldn't put past Stephenson. :P

Yesterday, I started teaching myself C++.

Not technically research as much as practice and trying out examples from online tutorials, but I do have the pleasant sensation of broadening my knowledge.

It's surprisingly similar to the feeling of leveling up in Exile.
