Having seen this in a couple of cases, I'd just like to make a brief general announcement.

Concerning "www." in URLs

"www." comes from a time when the web was very new. Back then, domain names were hard to come by, and most of them did not point to http servers. Instead, they were either for other things - file storage, news or mail servers - or complete organizations (hence "domain") that offered several of these things (which would result in names like mail.domain.com, news.domain.com, ftp.domain.com...).

So when the World Wide Web appeared, the way to implement it on current domains was to add a new subdomain on the current one: www.domain.com. The www indicated that this was a "web server" which could be reached with a "browser".

The reason for different names was also that each service would be reached with a different protocol, and if you tried to send a website request to a mail server, it would cause errors.

In the past two decades, the www has expanded to become the most popular aspect of the internet, and most domain names these days are primarily for websites; or even exclusively.

Also, it has become good practice to host different services on the same name (take "mail.google.com", which is both a mail and a web server), because the server will know which protocol to use from the port. Port 80 is for http, port 25 for sending mails.

This means "www." has absolutely no purpose anymore, and domains should not require it (unless they are one of those big organizations and do have a lot of servers under their domain name - and even then port 80 should ideally be redirected to the web server).

----

Therefore, x.ermarian.net sites will never have "www" preceding them. Trying to reach them over www .x.ermarian.net will work of course, but it will only redirect to x.ermarian.net.

----

Thank you. For more information, refer to no-www.org. :)

Edit: The only other reason to use the www. is that UBB will turn it into a link. :P

It's mind-boggling how many don't realize the above.
quote:
"Hey, <DINTIRADAN>, your forum doesn't work!"
"Huh? Worked for me. Let me try." (Types <FORUM>.forumer.com)
"That's stupid; why doesn't www.<FORUM>.forumer.com work?"
(Facepalm.)
Hmmm... seems I've been ranting a lot about my inept friends lately. Oh well.

EDIT: UBB is too user-friendly.

Canada's treasury board has just published the results of a $1.5 million survey on public service morale. The results indicate that 90 percent of federal public servants like their jobs, while 20 percent report being harassed on the job. Which means... 10 percent don't mind a bit.

Well, it's good practice to still acknowledge www while the less techy people are adjusting - of course it's best to redirect it to the URL without the www immediately to give them a nudge.

Seconded, and quoted for awesomeness.

And if those 3 megabyte monsters are the product of Aran's attempts at compression, then I shudder to think how large the originals must have been. I'm not hallucinating, am I? The pictures hover around 3 megabtyes in size, right?

Dude, those are the originals.

Edit: Well, that or you counted the digits wrongly. They're 300k each.

From my right-click information window: Size of File = 2968.57 KB. Either that is nearly 3 MB or my name is Shirley (it's not).

EDIT: ARG. I kept getting the stats from the original originals instead of the miniaturized converted versions.

I knew it had to be one of the above. Because the alternative was that I could suddenly download over 1 meg a second from the west coast. :P

The originals were between 2.5 and seven megs, for the curious souls here.

And Diki, I have two more crossbow strips here, upon request.

Yes, because when I read Garfield I think to myself 'It's good, but could it be done with thought balloons photoshopped onto pictures?'

I'm just glad Milton Friedman didn't live to see this.
