Usually, posting a poll like this in itself would merit a response of "Yes." Besides, if I believed for one minute you'd leave on the basis of a poll result, for any length of time, let alone permanently, I'd deserve to be called moron. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! hahaha. Edit: Nearly forgot my info. Name (what you want to be called in the readme): Arancaytar E-mail Address: arancaytar.ilyaran@gmail.com Operating System: Windows XP Beta-testing experience: none. Well, I beta'd TM's Bandits II: BotRS, but given that I only ever sent a single answer email and then dropped out for lack of free time, I don't think it counts. That is, it wouldn't if this were an actual betacall. [ Thursday, March 31, 2005 21:32: Message edited by: Are run? I posted my first 1000 posts in 5 months, and the next in nearly a year. The third will likely take longer, so I'm afraid I'm going to drop out entirely at some distant point. Estimated to be around 2071 or so. But that would be be because I'd be dead by then. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! As for the "wipe each other out" - apathy keeps you alive, yes. But it does not help the rest of the world one bit. [ Thursday, March 31, 2005 21:17: Message edited by: Are run? I got my parents by saying that half my tooth (which I got fixed two days ago) just broke off. I don't think I actually sounded so authentic (I'm a horrible actor), but they believed it for about a minute before I started laughing. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Who says we're not actually living in the imagination of some very, very creative guy? I picture someone with white hair and a wise, knowing expression, professor-like, quill and pipe in hand, a bit like Tolkien perhaps, who has invented all our funny languages and mythologies and religions and history. And now we live in that world. Why wouldn't it seem real to us? I'm sure some of our history makes for excellent fantasy novels. But I will have to argue with anyone who claims to know that author's mind, and claims to know what she/he wants us to do. Speculating about this author is theory, and while I might hold that idea in mind as reality - in the way I might "believe" in the existence of Middle-earth - I could not allow that belief to influence my actions. Religion is, basically, a combination of mythology, philosophy, and ethics. Give me the ethics and I'll consider their value, but please don't force the mythology down my throat along with that. I know murder is bad without an old book telling me so. [ Thursday, March 31, 2005 02:03: Message edited by: Are run? Kite are. ] -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! quote:Oh, but my God is better than your god! That is the only bit that I'm annoyed by. Religious advertisement is not an "intrusion" to me, nor am I annoyed by the motivation behind it. I am only annoyed by the naive doggedness in repeating the same words over and over. And by the assumptions someone appear to make about my intelligence when he or she brings up unfounded or circular arguments to support it. Christianity has many good things going for it, that set it apart from several other religions. Peace, love, offer the other cheek, feed the poor, etc. Why not mention that instead? ((Of course, Buddhism has that too, and Islam apparently as well, to say nothing of many other religions. But I wouldn't fault anyone for bringing it up; fundamentally, all brands of washing powder fulfill the same purpose, only some do it better than others. Advertisers are not required to say: "Any other product of this kind is built to fulfill the same function.")) But I expect to be convinced, not persuaded. That means someone will have to tell me the pros and the cons of their faith, and how it works in practice, considering the community that practices it. Not by repeating over and over, "my God is good and all others are bad, and you will go to Hell if you believe otherwise." If I find myself wanting to join that community, then I am as good as converted. If I find myself mentally stopping my ears and wishing that "the damn preacher should just go away", I'm not and will likely never be. I don't fault a preacher for determination, but if they can do better, then it is dishonest of him not to do so, and my conscience would not allow me to honestly believe him. If he can't, well, then perhaps his religion wasn't all that cool in the first place. Don't blame him for trying, but I don't feel bad when I tell him to try somewhere else.
