Ah yes. I just remembered that so many people have thought I'm from England. Perhaps it's my dialect or something.

That said, we can do one of three things:

a.) continue to talk until either the thread is locked or others join in or both

b.) stop talking and let the thread die

c.) post mangos and goats until it gets locked, like the eagleworldfanclub thingy.

The first would make us look like noobs, the last would put our reputation at stake. (Filibustering always involves staking one's oldbie reputation and personality against standard procedure, and trying to influence the administration that way.) What do you suggest?

No, this is just the standard birthday party, held only two months in advance. Hate mail or criticizing my cooking would merit a far worse retaliation - even though the latter would be a very justified criticism. :P

Also, why did you say tea and crumpets? Isn't that rather a British thing?

No, it is because I am currently holding them captive in an abandoned mine somewhere south of the border and forcing tea and crumpets down their throats. ;)

Edit: Ouch. Didn't mean to post here. Honestly. In my defense, I'll say that MM has posted, and while he hasn't been around much, he certainly enjoys oldbie status.

Edit: Alec beat me to the punch. I might as well edit all this out again, seeing as he's the expert. ;)

Edit 2: On reflection, what I posted appears to have been correct, though I didn't put it as well. To summarize:

Communism is a branch of Socialism. Socialism in general refers to the idea of power being in the hands of the masses, while Communism specifically refers to an egalitarian society in which private property is abolished, and shared by all members of society. According to Wikipedia, "Marxism and communism are both very specific branches of socialism. The two do not represent socialism as a whole."

Perhaps this is evolutionary behavior. Like biological mutations, these "social/psychological" mutations may be crucial in evolving our society's morals: If whatever behavior the individual displays ensures better survival, perhaps it will eventually spread.

Which would also ensure havoc whenever individuals are separated from the rest of society. In a normal society, these "mutations" are either supressed by the individual, or discovered and treated. In an isolated community, eg. an island full of stranded schoolboys from a plane crash, such mutations may be inherently encouraged.

That would mean this isolated society in Lord of the Flies doesn't spin out of control as it appears to, but rather adapts to its primitive environment very rapidly. It just seems to degenerate in the eyes of our more "stable" society.

Of course, this idea implies a kind of moral relativism, which I normally disagree with. So maybe I should look into it a bit more.

Number 84.

Interestingly, they have different postcounts and different karma. They are obviously identical (email address, website) and have the same displayed name, which the boards usually don't allow. Also, one lives in the USA and the other in Germany. Strange... maybe he moved?

Same here. The spread is really badly done. I'd be very surprised if anyone has more than 600,000. Most are either college students or highschool students, and they'll have something in the range 0-10,000 if we want to be broad.

Perhaps a more logarithmic scale would be better. You know. 0-100, 100-500, 500-1000, 1000-2500, 2500-5000, 5000-10000, 10000-50000, 50,000-100,000, +100,000.

Sadly, it appears that the Spiderweb Forums run on a UBB system that has not been updated since the days of Misc, or around Fall 2002. You can see this by comparing the version number at the bottom of the page ("UBB.classicTM 6.3.1.1") with the version history, which says: "Version 6.3.1.1, August 14, 2002 - Version 6.3.1.2, November 14, 2002".

So we're running on software that will soon be three years old. Naturally there'll be some bugs, or they wouldn't have been updating it ten times, would they?

Well, of course someone might edit the database manually or something. But I've made it a policy not to assume things I don't understand are simple. ;)

It's a habit some people have. I picked it up in a very fast-paced forum where, if you didn't write a single word post, chances were someone else had posted by the time you were finished.

I don't do it much now. This was on purpose. :P

Back on topic: I've noticed not only my displayed name and postcount updating randomly (usually I can get it to update by posting in a thread, or even by editing a post): On occasion, I would log on at another computer, change the name a couple of times, return to the computer where I was still logged in a few days later, and it would still show the old name. That is, the name from several days ago, when I last logged in on that computer. My guess is the displayed name is stored in a cookie or something, becuase it updated as soon as I logged out and back in again.
