I have a cable connection from home that transmits around 100 Mbit/s (ie. 12.5 MB/s) in theory, in total. Partly due to the large number of users sharing it simultaneously, that usually works out to around 2.8-4 Mbit/s (350 to 500 K) for me.

Not much better than DSL, but much cheaper (3$ a month, 10GByte monthly transfer)

Actually, he's said this to me as well. "Purposeful obfuscation" I think he calls it.

There are days when I try with all the sorry heap of mental ability available to me to decipher his meaning and get what he is talking about, just to see whether I agree or disagree.

When I think I have possibly gotten a clue, I look on the Lyceum or Spiderweb to see if there's some clue I might be correct - and usually, I find someone asking if TM meant *this* (and *this* is exactly what I thought about), and he replies with some variant of "Wrong, fool."

There are other days when I think "Not worth the damn bother." But it's disappointing, because there's nothing that sparks my curiosity as much as something I can't understand.

If the child isn't hungry, wouldn't it be better to send the food to Africa where there are people who need it? Rather than stuff the poor kid's tummy?

At least we have confirmed once again that the automatic filters are alive, active, and filtering out parts of words.

That's not the worst I've seen though. I know a forum that is so paranoid about javascript exploits, it masks the word "script" to "******".

It is always fun to try and think of a synonym for "de******ion" that will actually be readable.

Ambitious.

I tend to be either of pretty much four things: Enjoying a current moment, anticipating/planning/daydreaming of such a moment in the future, despairing over a very unpleasant moment, fearing such a moment in the future.

When I'm happy, I know it will go away at some point ('if to the moment I could say/linger thou now, thou art so fair', huh?). I actually like the anticipation to such a moment far better, because before something has begun I need not worry about it ending. That's why I like my ambitious phase best. I feel so productive then.

That sounds about correct. Has it been different at some point?

And this idea is trash. Sorry to say this so bluntly but let me explain: The purpose of a troll is to make communication unpleasant, difficult, impossible or cumbersome.

Communicating in this way has been proposed before (I remember a thread where everyone was supposed to edit their own post to make a reply, and only post once), and it is absolutely impossible to communicate in this fashion. By making communication cumbersome, difficult or impossible, how are you solving the troll problem?

Oh, and if you suggested editing powers to the first post for everyone - doesn't work with UBB. And a switch to another board engine is, for the moment at least, pretty much out of the question.

Five stars are rare, and usually the result of

a- making a large number of multiple accounts and voting yourself up

b- being a girl and looking cute in the eyes of Spiderweb's predominant population of male geeks.

For understandable reasons, most people with five stars are newbies, ie. people who have only a few posts but made themselves so popular with them that the few who rated them voted them up. Older members tend to balance it out as Alo said.

Just because he's described as such, doesn't make the label accurate; Douglas Adams is not a psychologist. There's a common popular misconception that "manic depression" is simply a term for any severe depressive disorder.

Heh, don't tell me - I remember a sermon in a church where the pastor used just the term "manic" to refer to depression. :D

And while it may not be technically correct, "Marvin the Manically Depressed Robot" is an accurate quote from the book just like "Paranoid Android", though it is clear he doesn't suffer from paranoia. It's like questioning the factual accuracy of the Earth getting demolished by Vogons. :P

((Actually, Marvin does display some occasional moments of megalomania - "Brain the size of a planet" -, which often accompanies the manic moments of bipolar people - I know someone with this in real life, and he alternately bounces between deep depression and ideas of being the greatest philosopher the world has yet seen etc.))

I don't say this because I spelled it wrong, but... well, maybe i'm just nervous. I don't want to insult people, but I'm really getting tired of this "correcting-mania" that has started here.

Well, I'm German, I have to correct people, there's your stereotype. :P

Also, since the other topic has been closed, here's my reply to your question about why Spam posts should be avoided: ;)

1. It takes up disk space. There have been two board prunes in the past year. Both of them deleted valuable, historical posts (discussions, roleplays, etc.) that are now only available in the archived version. I and many others would be very... disappointed... to see more such valuable old posts be deleted just because some noob wants to be titled "Veteran".

2. It clutters communication. When I read these forums, I often have to do this in a relatively short time (say, thirty minutes). I can read most of the daily posts at General in that time, but I'd rather only read at least somewhat interesting stuff (there's no denying that off-topic posts or 'spam' can be interesting, but there is a line between refreshing insanity and pure, dumb stupidity). If I find myself ploughing through a dozen topics with two new pages each and in the end find perhaps two or three posts that are remotely interesting, I'm disappointed.
