Personality problems in Blades of Avernum

You have given personalities to the actual people, right?

This next thing is about the states in dialogue, and it is hard to explain in words, and you probably already know this, but I'll endeavor to go ahead anyway.

The scope (where it will have affect) of a 'state' is the entire dialogue script, not its personality. Assume that you don't have any entities that share dialogue nodes. Ent1 has been given states 1-10 for his dialogue. Ent2 will have to continue from state 11 for its dialogue, otherwise the options present in the states from Ent1 will appear in Ent2's dialogue.

So you are saying that a projector beam will destroy whatever spaces it is considered to have occupied, and the mirror space is considered so?

Small bug, but a simple check for mirrors would fix it, so I think he is just lazy.

My feelings toward this are variable. On one hand, the dialog pictures were very good for setting the mood in BoE, and the custom creations by graphic artists were pretty good.

But it is just an aesthetic thing. I'm sorry, but I'd prefer more functionality to be added if it had to be a choice between the two. Do not misinterpret this; I'd like the pics, too.

But I think the main thing that is on my mind is whether or not the pics can be of variable size. A limitation to small pics might make them not noticeable to some, while big ones will force text off the screen. I hope there is some mechanism for this, rather than restricting the size.

This might be expecting too much out of Jeff, but he did say he vowed to give ongoing support for BoA. I think these calls would also be very useful:

TP 3.3
TP 13.1
TP 9.1

WBN 6.4, 6.5 (for documenting item locations)
WBN 14.1, 14.2 (Locs of waypoints)

NL 5.1

They are listed by:
1) From TP to NL.
2) My order of priority.

If 6.4 and 6.5 are implemented, this Would Be Nice:
short item_on_loc(short loc_x, short loc_y) - Returns the type of item found on {loc_x, loc_y}. Returns 0 (null / empty item) if nothing there.

Ugh, there is a mismatched quote on the Merlin line.

It should be "Merlin", not Merlin".

Thinking about importing the items into the new town?

FORGET ABOUT IT!

Thinking about [easily] moving the monsters back and forth between towns?

FORGET ABOUT IT!

Other than that, BoA's system actually allows a little flexibility in this respect. Say that the universes are fundamentally separate though things that happen in one can influence the other one. That way, the walls can be the same, but items and monsters can be different.

Probably BECAUSE BoE had special as a species, and just for easy porting and because of a lack of imagination, Jeff just did it the same way.

That is kind of pathetic, though. Multiple friendly Vahkohs helping you is just silly.

Poll: Password protected scenarios: what do you think? in Blades of Avernum
Agent

It could be possible, and nearly as trivial, to implement real encryption with free encryption libraries, but why? The password system in BoE caused more problems for people who wanted to look at other people's work than was really necessary. It was also really sad for those who forgot their passwords, and the check for the password is easily bypassed anyway.

I wouldn't know how to do it, but there is definitely a way.

I think it would be a little too easy if you could gain levels faster on a higher difficulty level. I mean, each difficulty level doesn't increase the difficulty that much.

If I am prodded enough, I can make a Javascript enhanced XTHML CSS page for creating spell libraries. No big problem.

Anyway, I slightly modified the list of things in my thread of bugs. * indicate bugs, + indicate suggestions.

I know there must be other bugs in a program as badly programmed as this one. Send 'em in!

Sorry to correct you again, but I believe that monsters will not be placed onto fields like fire and ice.

If you conflagurate the doomguard constantly, I don't think it can split. If you find it worth it, scrolls of Wall of Blades can also be indispensable AS LONG as you can do lots of damage very very quickly.

You have the code that you want to execute in a defined state in your town script, and you refer to that state by creating a special encounter rectangle in the editor. When you create an encounter with the button that looks like a big dot, a dialog should come up automatically to ask you for what state you want it to be linked to.

And you set the town's script name in the Town Details box.

You could make a custom trapdoor terrain and attach a trapdoor script to it with 3 memory cells for where the trapdoor would lead.

But otherwise you could just use a normal spec enc.

Ringing in General
Agent
Member # 2820

Extremely loud noises and ear trauma can cause Tinnitus, and it usually goes away after a while. It is natural, but shouldn't occur more than once a day, and even then it is a little too frequent. Most of the time the ringing will simply impair hearing, but in really bad cases, you can't hear. But I think that is more of nerve damage.

This is probably just me, but when I exercise and just plop myself down to rest, then I get up really fast, the blood drains out of my head and I get dizzy and the ringing comes to my ears for about 10 seconds.
