I know this is kind of an odd random question, im sorry to have to ask this here but does anyone know what it means when your ears get this wierd ringing noise in them from time to time? I will just be sitting here and I hear this loud ringing thing in my head and it kind of scares me. I head it might be from listening to music too loud, I kind of tend to do that, but Does anyone else feel this ringing thing?

Sometimes, yes. I don't know what it's called in english (it's "tinnitus" in Finnish), but it's definetely from listening too loud sounds for too long periods.

I've had that before, but it went away in a short period of time. It's neither uncommon nor serious if it only lasts a little while. How long does the ringing persist?

Ringing is the sound of silence, be it temporary or permanent.

My ears have been ringing for years. I'm used to it, so it doesn't bother me.

I occasionally have it at 3-4 in the morning or so, after sitting at the PC for 8 hours without interruption. It's more a monotone whistling than a ringing, but I guess it's the same.

For me, it goes away after a few minutes at most, but it's still annoying. (Oh, by the way, it just started again. Speak of the devil. :P )

Afaik, tinnitus is actually the medical term used. I believe it's the symptom of certain hearing disorders. So if you have it for long periods of time, or very frequently, you might want to contact a doctor.

^ yes it usually does occur after listening to loud music or something. the ringing in your ears is actually the sound of one (or more) of the hair cells in your ears dying. Too much of it, and you won't be able to hear certain frequencies of sound any more.

Rogaine for ears on sale!

It happens to me sometimes as well but not usually after I listen to music, it just happens randomly from time to time. Normal human thing as far as I know.

It may be tinnitus, it may be nothing to worry about, just a minor irritation. However, few to none of us are qualified medical doctors, so I'd advise that you ask one of them.

Lucky for me, I don't listen to music...loud anyway. So my ears don't ring. Does that mean I'm an alien? *gulp*

Yep, your ears are tasting the first tinges of salinity (whether you like it or not) and most likely will continue to die a slow death until you Earthly (or is it, Martian :P ) body dies its death. It's how life goes. :(

I'm no doctor, but I believe tinnitus is usually associated with both a loud ringing and a disorientation effect (dizziness).

As for the ringing, it is most likely the loud music. I play in a hard-rock band myself, and have always loved the genre, so I get it all the time. I don't think it's too serious, though it might have long term effects; ie bad hearing when you get old.

Extremely loud noises and ear trauma can cause Tinnitus, and it usually goes away after a while. It is natural, but shouldn't occur more than once a day, and even then it is a little too frequent. Most of the time the ringing will simply impair hearing, but in really bad cases, you can't hear. But I think that is more of nerve damage.

This is probably just me, but when I exercise and just plop myself down to rest, then I get up really fast, the blood drains out of my head and I get dizzy and the ringing comes to my ears for about 10 seconds.

Rapid blood pressure changes or other changes in the pressure in your ears also cause a very temporary ringing effect. If you have a cold or other such illness that will cause sinus congestion, you can frequently experience a ringing due to pressure changes in your inner ear. As you age and are exposed to loud sounds, your hearing will slowly decay and the ringing will increase. Its okay, everyone has it. If you don't have any ringing, it just means you haven't been exposed to much loud noise, or you just aren't perceptive enough to pick up on the ringing.

This happens to me about once a week (roguhly speaking), and usually not related to listening to loud sounds.
Also, sometimes I have a bit of the "sea" sound (like you get if you listen to a hollow shell) and that also happens at seemingly random moments.

In my case the second thing may be because I have an ancestral line that goes back to Innsmouth, MA.

You can also hear strange things if your ear becomes blocked with excess wax or you get pieces of material (usually calcium, I believe) loose in your ear. The calcium is also likely to cause dizziness, and both are more likely to gurgle than ring, but it might account for some ocean-like noises.

—Alorael, who would consider ringing to be a sign that the aliens are making contact with you through the devices they planted in the enamel of your teeth when you were kidnapped from Roswell. You don't remember it, but that's only because of the extensive memory alterations perfored by the (soon to be defunct?) CIA.

I hear voices. Voices telling me to kill. Kill. KILL!!

Heh. Just kidding. I occaisionally experience tinnitus, but only either after something loud like a club. Or after coming off my PC after a couple of hours, though I blame that on the low droning noise it makes.

I don't think it's the noise that makes a club make your ears ring. I think it's the head injuries.
