Um:

Thralni procured 20 arrows of life.

You have mastered the ability to teleport, possess humans, and create your own undead army. You have a command of magic which is apparently comparable to Erika's.

Thralni was excited to learn spells like Bolt of Fire after he raided Moon.

Yes, clearly Thralni is going to screw you over...

No. Well, yes; Fast on Feet does give you a 10% bonus to dodge (which does not go up with your level).

Fast on Feet is useful if you are really desperate to get to 20 AP. You can get +3 from items, +2 from Quick Strike, to get to 13. With the +1 Fast on Feet gives, you will sometimes have 14 AP, and when hasted that gives you 21.

However, there's really no situation when all the effort (particularly the massive number of skill points going into Quick Strike) would be at all worthwhile.

If you are simply going for the best advantages, you're better off with others.

Two of your link lines are so long that they take up two lines each, on my screen (1024 x 768). No, I don't maximize browser windows to take up the whole damn screen. Then you have that pointless divider, and three lines of eneuretic wanking...

Dame Annals: I began rereading The Tale of Genji last night (I should add it to my "classics" list), and came across this passage from Murasaki's diary, in the introduction:

"There is a certain lady here called Sayemon no Naishi who has evidently taken a great dislike to me, though I have only just become aware of it. It seems that behind my back she is always saying the most unpleasant things. One day when someone had been reading The Tale of Genji out loud to the Emperor, His Majesty said: 'This lady has certainly been reading the Annals of Japan. She must be terribly learned.' Upon the strength of this casual remark Naishi spread a report all over the Court that I prided myself on my enormous learning, and henceforth I was known as 'Dame Annals' wherever I went."

It struck me, and I decided it was time for a change. Plus, the way I've been going on lately here, I've been acting like a real know-it-all, so it's only fair.

btw, aran, whatever happened to your idea about making your signature nice and compact instead of seven bandwidth-clogging lines long? It lasted a whole three days ^_^

Whoops!
Well that's kind of a big mistake. It seems the term I was looking for was isthmus. I'll use that from now on, but this doesn't seem worth editing 50 posts for.

My bad - I was thinking of the Bering Strait, which had a land bridge long, long ago. Whoops.

Did you intentionally create an Avernum party, Dikiyoba?

Between this and the bug somebody found that allows you to use human graphics for nephils and sliths, it looks like if I ever play A4 again, I can have a real party, rather than coming up with contrived superhero names to fit my four spandex-clas nephils.

The Demonslayer bit was nice.

Trust a giant from as far away as he can throw. Trust a nephil from as far away as he can shoot. Trust a slith from as far away as he can aim a fireball. But never, never trust a human -- until he is a mangy corpse!

-- The Great Authoritative Extra Great Guide to Killing, Slaying, Butchering, and Otherwise Disemboweling Humans
--------------------

Kappa didn't worry when Gobrak was first reported missing. Goblins wandered off all the time when they were marching, let alone while glugging. But when the evening began and his entire brigade hadn't been able to find him, Kappa grew concerned. He put twenty of his best warriors on alert.

Later in the night, one of them claimed he saw something dart between two boulders. Kappa wasn't taking any chances, so he sent the warriors to fan out around the area. They came back a half hour later, surrounding another, taller figure. A nephil!

"Kappa Kappa, sir! This is Hralek. There was another one, but he scampered off before we could grab him."

The nephil spoke quietly. "Hrrnrr. Greetings to you, goblin Kappa. I bear you no ill."

Kappa scratched his head. "We do not bear any ill or any ill to the nephilim. Goblins! Leave us some space."

When the others had left, he grilled Hralek about what he was doing there and what had happened to Gobrak. Hralek, of course, knew nothing about Gobrak. But he told Kappa that they were "scouts" from the great army of the nephilim, and, when pressed, he told Kappa about the "seeker of knowledge" whose "house" was by the strait.

Kappa bowed his head, then raised it again. "I cannot see any reason of distrust. But I must be sure." He blew a bubble with his saliva. "I will send to our leader, the Great Goblin, words of hospitality on riders for you, and for your fellow scouts. But in return you must stay with me until we have dealt with this 'seeker of knowledge.'"

Hralek made growling noises, but he nodded his agreement. He really had no choice in the matter.

The following morning, Kappa left his main force with Gobfried and took a small deployment of mages and warriors with him and Hralek to look for the seeker's house. Since Hralek did not know where it was, they spent most of the next day wandering around the beaches and the cliffs by the sea, looking for a house, before they discovered what they were really looking for.

[Aran: your turn. Gobubary/Kaz, Gilgamegob/RR, and Glooramza/Kaz later today if I have time and energy.]

Armor (from Hardiness or equipped armor) DOES decrease by a % of the damage. It's just that this % is often small, and pretty much all forms of damage in A4 have a very wide variance for how much damage they can cause before armor reduction is applied.

The point is that right now you can't read all the summaries quickly.

Aran -- whose PM mailbox is still stubbornly full -- can you delete Tyran's last post in the summary thread? We only want 1 post per player, so we can make sure it always fits on 1 page.

Wow. That was an eventful evening for the RP.
The circus was great. I agree, it deserves a prize.

About the summaries -- I love all the extra information, but the summaries are no longer summary. They are long and verbose. I think we should pare them down to, say, one line per character. Right now if I am looking for say the 15th person who posts in the thread, I have to scroll through three pages of TM and five pages of Aran giving lots of details. Details != summary.

Of course, sometimes a classic is just a book that's in the right place at the right time. Witness The Castle of Otranto.

Aran, I had kinda figured Caledon was closer to the northeast side of the mountains. That's where Gloodelita was. So, uh, pretend that red dot is on the northeast edge, not the southeast.

The Crichton comparison makes a lot of sense to me. I've always hated Dickens.

I read Robert Jordan a long time ago, so it's possible I just didn't appreciate his work as well as I might today. But he seemed even further removed to me from the realm of classics than Harry Potter. Sooner would a camel fit through the eye of a needle, I say!

Edit:
It occurs to me that there are general classics, and more specific classics. Ender's Game, for example, is undoubtedly a classic in the world of SF (however you expand the acronym). But is it a more general classic? It seems kind of borderline.

Here's a question: what's the most RECENT book you can think of that is generally recognized as a mainstream classic?

Infernal: Well, I appreciate that. At this point it doesn't seem worth arguing about. Once you start getting into battle with other factions, if it does end up being an issue, we can talk about it then.

Thralni, as we already discussed, your location descriptions for the three north-going nephilim make no sense. The ones who apparently saw me must be on the strait since I am not close to Valorim yet. Aran is pretty much on the strait. So if the lone nephil, the one who is heading to Aran, is not on the strait... then the other nephil are closer to Aran, and he took a detour for no reason. This makes no sense to me, and I think you are mistaken about where Aran is. However, since you have insisted that what you wrote is correct, I will go with it.

How many of these books are actually from the last 20 years? 20 years isn't a very long time. Things Fall Apart is one of my favorite novels, but it's older, and so is most of the Hitchhiker's Guide series.

Thralni: The point I'm arguing is the fact that it took Infernal TWO DAYS to DOUBLE the range of an existing teleportation spell. As I stated above, I am not arguing against having any teleportation at all.

That said, the fact that 300 years have passed is pretty irrelevant. For one thing, the Empire obviously had long-range teleportation capability before any of the history I mentioned -- since they were using it to exile people. The point of the history I mentioned was to demonstrate the length of time it would take to research the topic.

For another thing, if 300 years automatically equal huge advances, then magic would have been WAY more powerful in the days of exile than it was, given that the people of the Empire had several thousand years of history, and magic was hardly a recent invention. So that's obviously a false premise.

Excuse me, I misremembered. I repeatedly asked you how that could be the case, and you never gave me any sort of answer, insteading asking the timeless (and admittedly poorly dealt with by the game) question of how long is a mile.

The problem is that magical research just doesn't happen that fast. It just doesn't. It really doesn't matter if it's two days, or the equivalent of four days because you work overnight, and it really doesn't matter if it's teleporting one square or fifty. All research is slow.

And teleportation, on top of that, is extremely difficult.

To give some context: Erika, Rone, Patrick, Solberg, Aimee, and Linda were sent down to Exile in 776. Admittedly, they had a lot of other concerns to deal with, but they do say that they tried to teleport, and the Tower of Magi did not develop any real ability with teleportation until about 823. That's forty or fifty years, during which time the list of powerful mages in Exile continued to increase. Extending the range of their portal to get to Upper Exile took about another ten years, and at that point, it was obviously one of their top research priorities. Heck, at that point they had at least three mages working on it who were or became specialists in teleportation and portals (Mahdavi, Vidrain, Seles).

In E1, which takes place in 817, there are only two times in the whole game (IIRC) where anyone is teleported ANY number of map squares (as opposed to a portal taking you across a town or cave). The first is when you are Exiled. The second is when you assassinate Hawthorne. That teleportation requires:

(1) Erika
(2) An augmented teleportation circle
(3) Five magical artifacts

Admittedly, it does cover a very long distance.

The point is not that you can't telport, but that it's damn hard. The point is not that you can't research spell improvements, but it takes a huge amount of time, yes, even for an arch-lich who was a researcher in mortal life. Doubling the range of a spell does not happen overnight. The point is just that you can't toss this kind of thing around casually.

In closing, let me apologize for being such an anal jackass about this. :/

The humans think we are stupid. Eventually, they will learn. But do not dissuade them of their belief. The longer they underestimate us, the longer we can take them by surprise, and lead them to wholesale slaughter.

-- The Great Authoritative Extra Great Guide to Killing, Slaying, Butchering, and Otherwise Disemboweling Humans
--------------------

"Gobdammit!"

A huge wad of spit emerged from the darkness of Dorga's face. He always wore a red robe with an oversized hood that cast his face into shadow. He liked to have an image of mystery.

"Don't spit on the messenger, oh most honorableness of Dorga!"

He needed more time to search the delta, and now he was being called away to the north, to advance flank Glooramza. They were fighting some stupid warrior cult. Well, he could return later. But Grout and Goker were coming, too. Why did he have to go? Weren't they enough?

"Gobdammit. I'll repair the gobmic balance myself, if I have to!" Dorga muttered under his breath.

---

Glooramza was not happy.

This whole nephilim deal had seemed like a diversion from the beginning. Of course, the nephilim of the Jsoulza mountains had been quite hospitable. They were more than happy to let Glooramza and his men get comfortable in some of their coziest little pits. And their tunnels were beautiful. They were gracefully sloping passages and galleries lined with mushrooms. It would have been a nice place to live.

However, when they finally came through the mountains, the nephils there -- the ones who had actually been attacked -- were hesitant to fight. The humans had offered them some kind of fake truce, and many of them wanted to take it.

Glooramza regaled their leaders with stories of the persecution they had suffered at human hands, hundreds of years earlier. He told them the legends of Blue Gdobda, and he told them about the extermination campaigns of the Empire. Finally, finally, they were swayed.

"We will not sacrifice ourselves to attack these men," their chief had told him. "But our archers and our shamans will lend your their support."

Glooramza thanked him profusely, of course, but he was not happy. The nephil warriors ought to have been leading the charge. They were stronger, and they knew it. The cowards!

As they began to march west, towards the lands of Kaz, Glooramza began to cheer up. At least they would soon get to kill humans!

---

"Aiiieeee! Death to humanitarians! Death to humans and death to humans!"

With shrill cries the goblins charged into the mine shaft, swords and clubs swinging at the miners. Jolian swung his axe clean through the head of the first goblin, but that didn't stop the rest of them, who charged with intemperate bloodlust. "Fall back!" shouted one of the miners. They moved backwards in a leapfrogging pattern, with a few holding the line against the goblins, then falling back behind the others once they had gotten a good position. It was a makeshift tactic, and it wouldn't have worked with untrained and unskilled men, but for the fact that the miners knew the layout of the mine and the goblins didn't.

By the time the guards rushed in, a few more goblins had fallen, and most of the miners had taken a beating. There were only a handful of guards, but they wore tough leather hauberks, and had real weapons. They slaughtered another eight or nine goblins before the last four ran shrieking back into the caves. No casualties, and no serious injuries; they were lucky.

That night, the town of Caledon, such as it was, was on alert. The miners had tried to pile rubble in front of the passage the goblins had come through, but they couldn't really seal it off without risking the collapse of the whole area. So they posted guards by the mine entrance, and they sent a runner to Greenfield, the nearest city (and one loyal to the Righteous Return), to ask for assistance.

They were wise to post guards. In the middle of the night, a larger group of goblins came charging through the mines, with the same shrill cries of "Death to humans!" These goblins fought more defensively, so the guards pushed them back into the mines. They figured they could trap them in a dead end, and then take them out without too much danger.

And that was when the guards heard a whizzing sound coming from outside the mine. It was followed by an explosion, and a howling chorus of shrieks and roars.

One of the guards ran to the mine entrance. He could hardly believe his eyes. The roof of one of the shanties was on fire. The fire illuminated a terrifying sight. Caledon was surrounded by goblins on all sides.

Some of the miners put up their arms and tried to surrender. A group of goblins moved forward to meet them. The leader growled. The goblins ran them through with spears. The rest of the miners tried to fight. Ordinarily, they might have taken many goblins with them. But it was too dark for them to see well, and with goblins closing in on them from all sides, they had no room to maneuver.

The guard by the mine entrance shouted in a warning to his fellows, but it was too little too late. The mob of goblins jumped him, and then swarmed into the mine. Soon enough they found the guards, and with goblins on either side of them, they fell too.

The goblins were jumping up and down with glee, growling and laughing and swinging their weapons jauntily at the walls. Gloodelita smiled as he surveyed the destruction. There were a few dead goblins, and a pile of them in the mine, but not very many on the whole. And the humans were all dead.

He barked out orders to his troops. They would loot the town, if it had anything of value, and they would bury their dead. As a reward to his men, he would probably allow them to burn the rest of shanties down, too. But they would be gone by daybreak. Let the humans wonder what happened to their town!

[OOC: I will get to Gilgamegob, Kappa, and Gobubary later today.]

Quoted for emphasis. In fact I'd really like to quote this again for emphasis.

Infernal, yesterday you argued to me that it was perfectly reasonable for your liches to be researching magic at a pace and success rate that was exponentially higher than that of the Tower of Magi at its height. If you only have "one Erika" that doesn't make any sense.

Also, your first sentence is patently false, when it comes to magic. Undead don't need to sleep, but liches have a limited reserve of magical energy just like any other spellcaster.

The bottom line: If multiple other players think that you are being unrealistic or unreasonable, that you are giving yourself too much power or hurting the balance and fun of the game, you need to listen to them.

Here's another good rule: if you're going to give yourself a useful magical ability, come up with a drawback as well. So I gave my goblins scrying ability, but it's craptastic and extremely unreliable. I made them smarter than usual, but they're still mostly stupid. I allowed them to reproduce like rabbits, but they're still clumsy and weak.

Aran has a tiny faction with barely anyone who can fight, so close range telepathy's not a big deal. Anyone else with telepathy would be a big deal. And so on.

Edit: "Magi" is plural. "Magus" is singular.
