No. The Missing Forums and their offspring are totally unconnected to Richard White. This is a new threat, before which we are all equally helpless. In this instance, White cannot protect us. UPDATE: Some of you may have noticed that no matter how big a number forum you type in, there's always a page there telling you "FYI." Apparently, even numbers above 6,432,766,349,448,872,395,334,773 are being used. My theory is that these are decoys. The same goes for the upcoming Forum 20. Whether 21 will arrive before the Great One appears is a matter of some nervous anticipation, but I think we're safe until 20. I brought this matter to the attention of my mad scientist friend, Dr. Thadeus G. Stasislaw Koenigsburg IX, and he seems to think that "FYI" might stand for "Fomalhaut Yeti Incursion." However, he did not care to elaborate on what that meant exactly. Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

8 9 11 12 "What do these numbers have in common?" Such an innocent question. Such a hideous answer. Every forum on this board has a number. Geneforge is 10. Nethergate is 6. Numbers 1-19 are taken, with the exception of 8, 9, 11, and 12. And it is no coincidence that this, the Richard White Games Forum—in which so much dangerous dabbling takes place—has the number 13. But what of these unused numbers? What of the forums that should fill those gaps? What things truly lie beneath the deceptively blank exteriors of these "Missing Forums"? What nefarious communiques are being hidden from our sight? What unspeakable rites will make them visible? What ancient secrets will be learned from their contents? And why is each called "FYI"? What diabolical phrase is embedded in that cryptic acronym? And as for Forums 20 through infinity, what of them? Are they the incubating larvae, the infant progeny of the Missing Forums? Will they pupate in numerical order? Does our ignorance and inattention hasten their growth? Or, now that notice has been drawn to them, will their voids infest our minds, and make our souls the nesting places of their unimaginable young, to ravenously feed upon our essence when they hatch? And what will happen when their plans are completed? Can their nature, reasons, and goals be comprehended by mere mortal minds? Is it possible that they are merely preparing the way for Forum 6,432,766,349,448,872,395,334,773, which has been spoken of in hushed prophecies since time immemorial? For countless millennia great sages have puzzled over its meaning—to them it was but a meaningless phrase. As with all true prophecy, its meaning is hidden until its time of fulfillment is nigh. Then all becomes clear and the Faithful quake with terrible understanding. Each generation of Missing Forums flourishes for a short time, the unique genetic makeup of each group being carefully constructed to make possible the next generation. With each generation the gene pool exponentially increases in complexity, potential, and speed. Soon each Missing Forum will give birth to a hundred. And those hundred to a thousand each. Each wave stronger and more alien than the last. And, once their task is complete, they will all be utterly devoured by their own Grand Descendant. All except Forum 13. Oh horror! They have become aware of my presence! They have spotted me, and scurry about faster than before. Already I can feel their foul conceptual mass expand. Already their number is legion. And their breeding accelerates. Can't you hear the very universe groan and creak beneath the oppressive weight of their quivering white corpulent flesh? Can't you?! I have taken a terrible risk to bring you this information, and now I shall pay dearly for it. But they do not have me yet. I still have a few moments... The great day approaches. It will not be today. It will not be tomorrow. But it comes. Sooner than you think. Forum 13 is Its mother—host to Its conception, and to Its birth. The Birth of the Great One. The Birth of Forum 6,432,766,349,448,872,395,334,773 If you have read this, you are already Hers. Prostrate yourselves now and you may be spared for the Greater Purpose. There is still time to save yourselves, but I fear it is too late for me. No one escapes Forum 13. No one. Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

I'm not trying to justify my decision—there's no need to do that. I'm just trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I like details. EDIT: If anything, I should be accused of either trivializing the question or taking it way too seriously. First of all, I think we should figure out exactly where these dollar bills are coming from. Are they mysteriously deposited into your account? Do they fall out of the sky? Do you wake up each morning with your socks drawer full of dollar bills? Or would the "curse" be that every dollar you received, regardless of the source, that someone died? In other words, if you got your paycheck would each dollar you receive that way count towards the death toll? And what if you spend these dollars? Since your dollar income becomes negative, do people start being resurrected? Can you pick who's resurrected? Or do new people just fall out of the sky or start appearing in your socks drawer? I answered 1,000,000+ on the first question, and 100,000 on the second one. For some reason I just couldn't pick 1,000,000+ with a clear conscience with the random victims picked from my own country. Maybe I'm just afraid the nice lady running that bookstore in Amarillo would snuff it. Those are some funny dreams! I especially like the bit about Alorael missing his picture. I had a weird dream about the forums a couple of weeks ago. Immediately after my grandfather's death several years ago (I was 17 at the time, and had been caring for him during his last few months) I found myself playing with Legos again, something I hadn't done since I was 14 or so. Not just putting them together and admiring them, mind you—playing with them. Moving the little men around, the pirates going "Arrrgghhh!", making up intensely complicated plots with the spacemen landing in the middle of a castle, etc. etc. I did this for about three or four months. One afternoon while doing this it's like a part of my mind suddenly went "pop!" I realized what I was doing, that I had "reverted" to an earlier stage as my mind came to grips with the loss in the background. It was then that my grandfather's death suddenly hit me. In the meantime my mind needed that reversion, that simplicity, in order to start coping with the situation. At first I was confused and ashamed of my behavior, but I came to realize that that's what I was doing because that's what I needed to be doing. So with all due respect I say to Fenwik—many years my senior, and possessing far more life experience than I—that you should cope with this loss as your mind is directing you. When the time comes to deal with it in a more permanent and concious way, it'll come of its own accord. In the meantime, go ahead and distract yourself, because that's what you need right now. You have my deepest sympathies, sir. I like Ben. Sure, he's a bit annoying, and sure he talks way too much and says some pretty inane things to increase his post count, but he's annoying in a fun kind of way, and he's certainly not malicious by any stretch of the imagination unlike a few hundred million people I can think of off the top of my head. -------------------- The A.E. van Vogt Information Site My Tribute to the Greatest Writer of the Science Fiction Golden Age Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

The first Geneforge game definitely has the best setting and storyline, but the second one is the most fun in terms of gameplay. There are lots more spells to use than the first one—many of them quite powerful—and there are four crazy sects at each other's throats that all want your help to defeat the others. Since Jeff does a good job of filling in the necessary background details in each game, you don't have to play the first one to play any of the others—doing so would enhance your enjoyment of the series since you'll have the whole context, but if you're out for the most fun and don't mind not starting out with the full picture, Geneforge 2 is the one for you. -------------------- The A.E. van Vogt Information Site My Tribute to the Greatest Writer of the Science Fiction Golden Age Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

The second to last Zerg mission in Starcraft (not Brood War), where you have to bring the crystal to the Protoss temple. Holding off the Protoss forces for the required period of time was very overwhelming. Especially when that Arbiter zipped by and froze my Guardians in the stasis field, and I had to rely on the paltry few Hydralisks and sunken colonies for defense during the last few seconds. A close call would be the last mission in Battlezone, where you have to destroy that Fury rocket ship in a short period of time. Believe it or not, in the last few seconds my tank was destroyed and I had to finish off the rocket with just my little pea-shooter! My roommates and I were ecstatic with amazed disbelief. -------------------- The A.E. van Vogt Information Site My Tribute to the Greatest Writer of the Science Fiction Golden Age Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

Very good, Ben! I see I made a wise decision in making you the leader of the White Shock Troops! With such impressive cunning at your disposal, I can see no army holding its own against you. My "real" name is Isaac, and I'll be turning 25 in a few weeks. It scares me to think that so far I'm one of the oldest people to post in this therad. You kids make me feel so old! I'm a shy bookworm with an intense interest in science fiction and history. I'm currently a part-time college student majoring in history, but am also interested in writing, bibliographic research, computer games, and baroque music. Yes, that would be most helpful. Thanks, Isaac. Reminds me of a "funny" story—when I was at college, there were three Isaacs on my hall. They were both apparently quite the ladies' men, and were constantly on the phone with their assorted girlfriends. I, on the other hand, was always in my dorm room with my nose in a book, and I knew that whenever a phone call was for me, it was actually for one of the other Isaacs. I eventually looked in the student directory and learned that there were only five Isaacs on campus—some cruel Fate had decreed that three of us should be on the same hall and have similar phone numbers, and that my peace and quiet should be eternally interrupted by girls with voloptuous voices desperately pleading to talk to Isaac. But always, always one of the other Isaacs! I'd be delving into the intricacies of early Soviet Russia, then suddenly have my thoughts shifted in a completely different direction. An agonizing direction. This happened two years in a row! Oh, Cruel Fate, you cut me to the quick! Why, oh why, should I, a shy bookworm, be selected for your vile amusement! What twisted whim set me in your sights? What demented pleasure do you gain from my unceasing torment? Why wrack my fragile heart with your coldly calculated ironies? I got to thinking, the popularity of this procedure in the early 1900s might explain the leadership displayed during the First World War—all the world leaders were suffering from simian testosterone poisoning. I can just imagine the Kaiser and company lined up with their shirts pulled up and their bellies unzipped, and some guy with a big bucket of monkey testicle mash scooping hefty helpings into their abdominal cavity.
