The only time you're not supposed to be able to break down or pick a door is when it's difficulty 200. Khoth's eye and pendant are indeed much better rewards than anything the empire ever gives you in any of the scenarios. I've found that unlock doors is a pretty much useless spell in BoA. One problem that a lot of scenarios have is not necessarily a lack of people to sell you things, but a lack of people to buy things from you.
