Starting from the first game gives you a bit of direction in the rest of the series. Exile may be a tad old, and is a 2-D, flat version of Avernum anyway. Geneforge I have no idea about but Avernum is still a good choice. About the online transaction thing, I don't know, I haven't done it. I have very little money so I can't purchase any of the games.
