Shaper goes out ahead to scout out for any dangerous monsters. When they finally reach the den of the gazer, all is quiet. They must be careful not to wake it. You know, Shapers always had creations. That's why they are named powerful. Second, the magic doesn't kill them right away. It takes several blows of powerful magic.
