Please use a heavy weight around your neck to hold your head underwater until you pass out. This should solve your problem.

You get the rat quest from Commander Terrance at Fort Talrus.

quote:
How do I find what I need to finish the 'search the mage's house' quest?
I searched all houses but found nothing and cant seem to finish this.
The house you need to search is Avizo's. There's nothing there; all you need to do is search around until you get the message that there's nothing there, and go back and tell Karen that there's nothing there. Mission accomplished.

It has indeed been fixed in later versions. The problem is probably on your end of things. (Unless of course Zxquez made them neutral or forgot to set a town crime level, in which case it's his fault.)

Considering Eddings's first work of epic fantasy was published in 1982, that seems unlikely.

You will note that heroic solutions are rarely the most simple or sensible way of going about things.

Koko -- a basic summary. (Follow the link to "Koko (gorilla)"; UBB won't allow me to put parentheses in links.) There's some controversy over whether what she does actually constitutes language, and even if it does her vocabulary is pretty limited. Follow the external links for more information and decide for yourself.

This is precisely the problem I have: I don't see how we can tell. As far as I can see, any animal could well be 'just' a complicated machine, with reflexive responses to stimuli, and complex instinctive behaviors, but no-one 'there' inside, to actually experience fear, or pain, or anything at all.
Well, if you want to extend your skepticism far enough, maybe consciousness is a unique event that only happened to you, and every other human just acts as if they have consciousness. How similar to you does an animal have to be before you're convinced it's conscious? Which of its properties are important?

Well, if you redefine 'save the world' into 'fight someone', the plot is indeed old. But there does seem to me to be a nontrivial issue of scale, here. As far as I know, the stories just listed all deal with problems that were important, but clearly localized even within the context of the stories themselves.
Yeah. My theory is that the emergence of saving the world as a plotline had something to do with the World Wars -- perhaps until then nobody seriously thought of the whole world as an entity that could be under threat?

Actually, that can't quite be true, as fiction and mythology up to that time have plenty of stories about the world being destroyed, but in those cases it's by supernatural forces that humans are powerless to stop. The World Wars were the first example of a threat on a global scale that was caused by humans and stopped by humans, and I think that's significant.

quote:
If you are looking for literally the whole world, I would say possibly Noah's Arch. He was not a hero in the RPG sense, but saving every creature is saving the entire world.
As Alorael points out, Noah didn't really save very much of the world; besides, all he does is build a boat, which somehow isn't enormously heroic.

It is of course widely known among aficionados of fantasy games and novels that the idea of the hero saving the world is a hackneyed old plot, perhaps not without its charm but overused by amateurs and poor writers. But how old is it really? That's a question that's been troubling me for some time now, and one that I'd like forumgoers to have a go at answering. Stated more clearly:

What's the earliest example of a work of fiction, in any genre, in which the protagonist, alone or in a small group, literally saves the entire world?

I can't for the life of me think of a good example prior to LotR.

To win the scenario, you have to use the controls in the Major Waste Repository. There are three things you need before you can do that:

* You need the Crystal of Power (from the Vahnatai)

* You need the instruction scrolls (from Pangle, the hermit you can find in the far southwest of the outdoors)

* You need to have turned on the power in the control room in the caves at the very bottom of the school. Turn on the power there, then go to the Major Waste Repository and use the controls.

If you mean that last time you played, you followed Spiegelbrecher to the south and he killed Leader and then you, that's the proper ending. Sorry.

(If you mean the part before that where your way into Sud Canopy gets blocked by trees, go back the way you came to see the General, watch the cutscene, then head south a little, east along the wall and south into the fort.)

Well, if you were siding with the rebels that soon, it's questionable that your party would realistically have taken an assignment to put down a rebellion (that is, entered the scenario) in the first place. :P

Hang on. It sounds like you've already completed Fortress Grenze and now you're up to the assault on Sud Canopy. In that case, the gate you want to go to is the one just to the southwest of where Fortress Grenze is, not to Grenze itself.

50 more levels of healing would heal an extra 150-600 points of damage -- and all for a mere 2 spell points. So yes, it's just a little too much. Also, there seems to be no way to prevent people from getting extra doses of the bonus by reading the book more than once; be sure to fix that.

Furthermore, you're only teaching it to character 0. You should probably teach it to the entire party.

THE GREAT DEBATE in General

Once it's a matter of deciding how good a creature's brain is, perhaps the dividing line really should be drawn well above cows? In other words, doesn't the supposedly moral issue of vegetarianism become a question of scientific fact, instead?
Well, one still needs some sort of an ethical system to say that certain things are wrong in the first place. If you're talking to someone who thinks cannibalism is perfectly okay despite the suffering it causes to the unfortunate people he's been boiling alive, you're probably not going to convince him that there's much wrong with eating cows.

As regards the scientific aspects of the issue, there have indeed been some claims that the brains of fish don't have the neural apparatus necessary for conscious processing of pain and fear, which would presumably make it less bad to eat them. These claims have been disputed, though.

After you kill Jaen, Stalker boots you off the island, supposedly because you're useless to the rebellion now that the Empire knows you're on their side. He also seems to be worried that you're a threat to his power.
