Yeah, taking away CoB was somewhat ill-conceived in hindsight. I've suggested an alternative solution to the Cloud of Blades problem, and I hope TM uses it in future scenarios.

Maybe so, but eating a raw game bird is really taking your life into your hands.

Well, not necessarily. Presumably you wouldn't just leave your money squirrelled away in an account somewhere, but instead you'd put it in a trust fund or something which would invest it and thereby prevent inflation from eating it away. On the other hand, that's still not a guarantee; if there's a stockmarket or currency crash, or a fundamental change in the way society handles property, you could still lose everything.

Yes, but what does any of that have to do with laps or hanging?

Hitting small animals is a great way to pop a tyre. Hitting large ones is a great way to wreck your car.

A little tact goes a long way, you know.

Anyway, we've discussed this before but I do have a few more ideas. Consider what a cryonically suspended person already knew when he chose the procedure: he would be bequeathing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cryonics company in his will, and he would do this with no guarantee he would ever be revived. And if he did reawaken, it would most likely be into a world in which everyone he knew was long dead.

What was his life like before his suspension? What motivated him to be suspended -- simply a desire to prolong his life, or perhaps to see the future? How did he get the money -- was he rich before his death, or did he have to sell everything he owned to afford suspension? Did he have any surviving family members at the time of his death? If so, did they object to his decision? In his pre-suspension life, did he leave any legacy on the world that is still around after his reanimation?

Also, uh, Spring? Your condemnation would be a lot more plausible if you didn't post within 3 minutes of the topic starter and have a suspiciously similar profile.

In the original post, where it says: Traiman said adequate safety assurances can be provided by testing a sperm donor at the time of the initial donation, then freezing the sperm for a six-month quarantine and testing the donor again to be sure there is no new sign of HIV or other infectious diseases,
This would work well enough; the problem is that storing all sperm for 6 months before it could be used would be a considerable added expense for sperm banks, especially since a significant proportion of donors would likely fail to show up for the retest and so their sperm would have to be discarded.

They're ALREADY tested for HIV. That's just common sense. The problem is that HIV tests aren't 100% reliable; they can still return a negative result even several months after someone's actually contracted HIV.

Well, I wasn't a betatester, but one point that comes to mind is that wands run out of energy and batons run out of thorns, while you can keep swinging a sword around all day.

It's generally already the case that a wide variety of information about donors is available -- not enough to identify them by name, but plenty of personal information nonetheless.

In any case, confidentiality isn't the primary issue here: if homosexuals are going to be banned from donating in the first place, the issue of whether prospective sperm bank customers should be able to know which donors are homosexual becomes a moot point.

It's worth noting that the rhythm method is only acceptable if the intention is to space out the timing of births a little better, not to prevent procreation altogether.

It's partly that but not entirely -- the Congregation's verdict was that the procedure would be inherently contrary to human dignity even if it were completely safe for all the embryos involved.

I was surprised too, but apparently the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has officially ruled that IVF is unacceptable under all circumstances. I can try to dig up the reference for you if you want.

No, it really is "no sex without babies", for the most part. According to Catholic theology, the sexual act exists primarily for the purpose of conception. "No babies without sex" is applicable as well -- IVF is right out.
