And most designers design toward the designing community, not the broader playing community.

You'd think it would be, but that would require the English language to make more sense than it does.

(Personally, I don't think of anything non-carbonated as a "soft drink". I wouldn't call imitation cordial a soft drink, for example, although some might disagree.)

It's actually Iain M. Banks, not W.

As for my own recommendations, well, I've mostly been reading textbooks lately. But if you're in the market for one of those, Pharmacology by Rang, Dale, Ritter and Moore has some amusing parts, like the anecdote about the effect of amphetamines on one medical student, or the extended rant on the lamentable failure of aphrodisiacs throughout history.

There's no way to get into that secret chamber. It's a red herring.

As for beating the Dark Idol, be sure to cast Radiant Shield before the fight to increase your magic resistance; if you have it at at least level 3, it'll protect you from the idol's fire attack, too. (You can buy Radiant Shield from the priest in the tavern.)

Invulnerability obviously helps a lot -- you can buy plenty of potions in town. And Heroic Brews are great, if you have any. If you rescued Baldev and met him to get his reward, that helps too.

I've always used "soda" exclusively to refer to soda water. Soft drinks are soft drinks. Pop is the absence of a definable musical style.

IP addresses aren't actually unique (to your computer, anyway); different computers on the same ISP can have the same IP address at different times. But I'd assume ISPs keep records of who is allocated what IP address at what time, which is still enough to identify you.

Fortunately, the ends of major copyright holders are served better by making examples of a few cases rather than spending vast amounts of time and money following up every act of piracy they see.

You better believe I've seen it. (Every scenario with some permutation of the word "Goblin" in its title, and then some)

4) Alien beast hordes.

Seen it probably more times than undead. (See #3, but replace "Goblin" with "Demon")

Oh, please. There's even a scenario by that name.

8) Evil forests-- evil treants, giant wolves, slithering bushes, etc. :P
Well, Tatterdemalion came sort of close to this. A couple of other scenarios had plant monsters as well.

What the hell is this? Blades of Nethergate?

10) Golem armies.

11) Conquerors from another world.
Well, er, I suppose that's fairly new to BoA. Unless you count demons.

12) Mutant or mind controlled hordes of creatures. Controlled by the evil slime lord or mind beasts.
Seen it. (Echoes: *)

...

Sorry, just felt like doing a bit of ritualised deflation there. Having said all of the above, just because something's been done before doesn't make it bad. What it does mean is that there has to be something to the scenario beyond "big monster plague" to add interest. This is true even if your big monster plague really is something new and interesting.

It's not all that hard to see if someone's been downloading a lot of music. I've heard the security of an unencrypted transmission over the Internet being compared to a conversation in a crowded restaurant; anyone who happens to be in the right place at the right time can listen in if they particularly want to. Tracing back the download to your computer and finding out your identity is less trivial, but perfectly achievable with the cooperation of your ISP.

Make the combat appropriate to the plot of your scenario. A dungeon full of monsters for the sake of having a dungeon full of monsters will seldom constitute a positive contribution to your scenario. Your scenario doesn't really have to have combat in it at all, if it wouldn't fit in.

The trouble with Cloud of Blades is that it inflicts damage as a percentage of the target's HP. Against very high-level enemies it can do 600 damage or more. The solution is to lower the monster's HP and raise its resistances instead -- a monster with 1/4 of normal HP and 75% resistance to everything will take 1/4 of the damage it otherwise would from normal attacks, but only 1/16 of the damage from Cloud of Blades.
