The impression I get is that Drakey doesn't have full access to the board's inner workings. It's quite likely he needed to enlist Mariann's help to bring back MM's account. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I don't think anyone here is suggesting that there ought to be some "easy way" to make people wise. But SoT here seems essentially to be suggesting universities could offer intensive courses in critical thinking, and I'm not convinced that it's possible to teach that in isolation. Now if he means that it ought to be taught by means of a broad range of instructive examples from various disciplines, that would be another matter -- but I think there are humanities courses that offer something fairly close to that already. It is, but you can still haste and bless with potions. And enemies' magic works just fine, so the statues are quite capable of summoning things that will kill you. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

From what I recall of Jeff Vogel's very early plans for a game that sounded vaguely like Geneforge (I believe he mentioned an idea for a game where the player could create monsters even before the release of Avernum 1), it seems as if it may even have been Jeff's original intention to allow a much greater degree of fluidity in the sorts of creations that could be made. Also, in case you didn't know it already, there's a trick that's useful in a lot of preset encounters in BoA; enter combat mode, bless and haste and all of that, then have your entire party use the Wait command once ("w" on the keyboard) before triggering the encounter. That way, you get at least one full turn in on your opponents before they can act. (If you're sufficiently hasted, this probably becomes *two* full turns.) After that, well, just pray your party can kill off the statues before they can summon anything. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Debates aren't designed to change the minds of the people participating. If there's an attempt to influence anyone at all, it's onlookers who may not previously have thought at all about the issue. More often, though, we debate because it's fun to show off what clever arguments you can construct for your position. As far as I know, I've only ever changed one person's mind on a major political issue within the space of a single argument. There's no "official" map of the surface (other than Valorim, of course). Some members of the Blades community have made unofficial maps that are reasonably well-accepted among the community, if you want to use one of those for inspiration. They're only based fairly loosely on canon; the names of the continents and their general properties are known, but everything else has to be made up. Cheating can be useful if you've already finished once and want to see how different decisions affect the plot without going through the trouble of replaying the whole game properly. Quite apart from that, though, people play the way they prefer. I'm not entirely sure how attacking them for doing so is justified or helpful. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Well, it does depend on what one is studying. Frankly, I'm not entirely convinced that anyone learns anything of value from an Arts degree that they couldn't learn in a less stressful manner by reading a bunch of books in their spare time. Nor am I convinced that having read a bunch of books qualifies one for any particular form of employment. Litalia's a nut; even as a rebel, you can pretty much kill her without repercussions anyway. Still, this does seem like a bug, and apparently it's been mentioned before. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |
