Opinions, yes, firm views, no. Opinions got be my karma, and firm views did also (ie. not easily saying, "Oh, yeah, sure, everyone should vote for Kerry!").

Oh, and tithing is a good thing. Good for missions, you know (err... ahem... I mean saving little black African kids).

High Karma is supposed to be a good thing, but the named-rankings for the SW Forums make it hard to know where to go.

I mean, being an "Evil Priest" is pretty cool, Saints are kinda sucky. What if I don't want to stand next to the Pope, what then?

I agree, been evil is way more fun and sounds better than being a saint. Nevertheless, five stars always look better than one.

I never (almost) participate in debates; the fact that my karma is not the lowest rating probably has a lot to do with that. It seems kind of pointless to me anyway, since the only way debates really affect anything is they help you understand your beliefs better. Has anyone actually left a debate and changed thier political party/religion/whatever? I doubt it. And it's not like president Bush is going to come to these fori and think , "These people hate me, I better end the war, legalize stem cell research, and make gay marriage legal throughout the US."

Debates aren't designed to change the minds of the people participating. If there's an attempt to influence anyone at all, it's onlookers who may not previously have thought at all about the issue. More often, though, we debate because it's fun to show off what clever arguments you can construct for your position. As far as I know, I've only ever changed one person's mind on a major political issue within the space of a single argument.

I think the main reason I don't like debates is if I strongly believe in one of the sides in the debate it just succeeds in making me mad,and I know that I wouldn't do to good in debates since most of the people here are smarter than me.

I understand what you are saying. Almost everyone in here is so smart, but that is how you learn. You learn by debating with the best. I like debating if I feel passionate about the subject, but it always depends on the person I am debating. Some people can be really closed-minded.

The only thing I've ever debated on this board was my moderator position. Mariann kicked my ass.

Less due to any superior debating skill than due to being able to say "debate over, you're fired"? :P

My problem with debates is not that people having opposing viewpoints angers me. It's that idiots like Ben completely ignore everything that people say and keep repeating the same points over and over even though they've already been answered.

Ya, whatevea. :/

My internal viewpoint instinct comes up with the same replies for different objections, whatever that means.

There have only been a couple of major debates since I arrived. The heaven/hell debate was farily good, although I didn't really get involved. Teri Shiavo was a big one, although it was already about 4 pages long when I first noticed it, so I didn't start. THE GREAT DEBATE was going to be about animals and being a vegitarian, but it didn't really get off the ground.

Damn. I've somehow managed to forget all about that for a little while now. Although my internet access isn't that great at home, my wrist healed up long ago, and so I suppose I'd be up for engaging in the debate in earnest. I'll admit that it probably would have begun long ago if I hadn't utilized more than a few delay tactics to cover up my reluctance to engage in a one-on-one debate which would involve a significant posting obligation. It's very difficult for a chap as lazy as I am to agree to accept such a responsibility.

Right now, however, I'm feeling just about up to the challenge. Expect a new debate topic from me some time in the next few days.

It was pretty damn fun. I got a ride down to my friend's apartment in Champaign-Urbana with another friend of mine. A few other friends also made the journey in order to be there. Add to that small cadre a group of friends and acquaintances that were staying the summer down there, and there was a fine party to be had.

We started out at the apartment, just drinking beers and chatting for a while. When a few more people arrived, my friend brought out the birthday cake. I went native, devouring my slice without once touching it with silverware or hands. As I was getting rather drunk, and it was still rather early, I took the advice of a few others and slowed down for a bit. A few other people arrived, and then, just before midnight, we gathered to trek over to a nearby bar.

On the way, I turned 21, and "Happy Birthday" was sung by all with great gusto. Upon reaching the bar, I received my first wristband, had a seat, and promptly was supplied with money to buy drinks for myself and others. They kept me fairly busy, but I had time to chill and enjoy myself. Several people I hardly knew stood drinks for me, which was nice.

At 2 AM, the bar closed down, and we were forced to leave and head back to the apartment. After that point, I don't remember too much, but I apparently managed to drag myself into a couch before passing out.

I woke up somewhat early, still feeling a little drunk and with a fairly bad hangover going. It got progressively worse in the next few hours, and I was sure I would end up vomiting. However, after a few slices of lemon at a local diner it quickly cleared up completely, after which I got a ride back home with my friend. Quite a fine weekend.

And, in case you're curious about the particulars of what I drank, here's about as much as I can remember, in roughly chronological order:

5 cans Pabst Blue Ribbon
1 shot Amaretto
1 Margherita
1 Mini Long Island
1 pint Leinenkugel's Berryweis
2 shots Jamison's whiskey
1 pint beer, of some kind

Keep in mind that all of this was consumed over a six-hour period. I wouldn't have survived the night if I had tried to drink all of that at once.

Sounds like a fine weekend indeed. While you were doing that, we were all here posting normally and wondering how you were doing. Then when you came back, there was the incident with Eraserhead. *shakes head slowly*

I started with a tolerance that was pretty much rock-bottom for my weight, and although it has been raised considerably over the course of the last year, it's still not all that high. I've got my genes to thank for that, I suppose.
