I can only assume it's French. There's no other good explanation for a silent S at the end of a word.

Only rational numbers can be expressed as a repeating decimal. I should imagine proving pi is irrational is dead easy (much easier than proving it's transcendental, which, as you know, means that besides being inexpressible as a fraction with integer numerator and denominator, it also can't be expressed as the root of an integer polynomial (e.g. a square root, a cube root, etc.) That pi is transcendental has also been proven, but it's harder and not necessary in this case.)

There are many pretty simple proofs for the irrationality of pi, but they mostly involve calculus. Here's one. I can't vouch for it on account of not having had the time to take it apart, but here it is:

Seth Lloyd, a professor at MIT, wrote a paper a few years ago (which I think was published in Nature) on the ultimate physical limits to computing. Anyone who is interested could probably dig it up on the physics e-print archive.
Think I read something vaguely like that in New Scientist. Essentially there are limits to what's computable given a computer that it's actually physically possible to build in this universe. The upshot is that we're never going to be able to solve the protein folding problem by looking at every possible conformation that a protein can fall into and finding the most stable.

Actually, he did finish and release a fifth book in the "trilogy", entitled Mostly Harmless. Some people say it's a little disappointing, but I rather liked it -- it probably has the most coherent plot of any of the five books (which isn't to say that the plot is particularly good, just that it serves to hold the events of the story together).

The Salmon of Doubt would therefore be the sixth book.

Let's say that if the PC kills a NPC, the NPC's SDF would be triggered. This would be useful because of clone towns (equal towns with the same NPCs, but where the actions in one of them are reflected in the other. Example: I kill John in town 1, he won't be in clone town 2).

This should be pretty easy. The best way would be to give all townspeople a custom creature script (via editing the creature data in your scenario's custom objects script). The script should be a modified version of basicnpc, with the main difference being that the DEAD_STATE sets an SDF which depends on two memory cells (one for part x of the SDF, another for part y). Now, just set memory cells to different pairs of values for each person, and remember what they are.

In addition to this, you could have the creature script's INIT_STATE check if it's already been killed and erase itself if it is. (Note that if you do this and the player uses the character editor to reset towns, dead people won't come back.)

3 - Is there a way to change a town's script in-game?

I mean, is there a command or any scripting trick, to make town 1 use the t1B.txt script, instead of the default t1.txt?
Nope. The best workaround is to create a duplicate of the town and use Variable Town Entry to "redirect" to it from the old one at an appropriate point.

Go *around* the Nephilim. Avoid them wherever you see them. Your eventual goal is to get to the northwest exit; there's something you can do elsewhere to make this easier.

Okay, have you entered the room where he lies down on the bed and rests? In that room, walk into the chair beside the bed.

EDIT: I'm assuming you meant you were stuck in the town of Ivalice. If you mean that you're stuck and unable to leave the Nephil camp, I can't help you.

Not at all. Write a program to calculate the digits of pi. Store its output. Eventually you run out of places to store it, so you can't store the answer to an unlimited degree of precision even if there are no limits on your program's ability to keep on calculating.

What version of the scenario are you playing? Version 1.0 didn't give you your spells back. I think the latest version does.

Nope -- at least, not during the course of normal gameplay. You can do it by messing around with the scripts, though.

You can also pay by international postal money order; just go to the local post office and they'll be quite willing to make out an order in any currency you like.

Yeah, nobody's ever really figured out why the Lost City does that. On Macs it usually just takes a really long time for the town to load, but on Windows it can often crash the machine outright. We're all a little nervous about it.

You do not, of course, literally mean that this applies in every case. Nine times out of ten, someone trying to overturn major ideas about how the world works is just an annoying crank. (The argument could be made that most of science's great minds were cranks who happened to be right, but I'll leave that for another day.)

I think what you were driving at is that the currently-established scientific consensus tends to consist mostly of relatively recent ideas, to a far greater extent than in other fields.

You'd have to ask Drakey. Presumably it either signifies the number 18, something else entirely, or nothing at all.

You have to kill Chika (don't feel too bad about it; as you know, it's not really her anyway).

If you pay attention to the message window, you'll notice that she drains any status effects placed on you. Haste yourself and suddenly she's hasted instead. Bless yourself and the same thing happens. Now, think about how you might be able to use that to your advantage.

I'd rather like to see more exploration of scientists being right for the wrong reasons as well. Thinking specifically of Millikan here, although there are plenty of other examples involving a greater or lesser degree of deliberate misconduct.
