Those two sentences were somewhat separate -- he did in fact explicitly imply that a large proportion of his players were functionally illiterate, on account of being 8-year-olds with violent tendencies. :P -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! It's true that they don't have to be 5 letters, though, as long as they're exactly two syllables long. "Snagot" is fine, for example. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Yes, this is pretty ridiculous. Pricking someone's fingers and ears is not going to do anything to clear pooled or clotted blood from inside the brain. Incidentally, the aspirin advice later in the thread is harmful if the stroke was caused by bleeding (as 1/3 of strokes are) rather than a blood clot. Even in the case of a blood clot, breaking up the clot can trigger bleeding in nearby areas of the brain and further brain injury. (Note: my analysis assumes the strong version of the paradox, where the prediction is 100% accurate.) Except that how many boxes you choose to take doesn't affect your chance of winning, unless you believe that your decision now can influence what's already been put in the boxes in the past. So if you don't believe in reverse causality (and you don't believe that the aliens are cheating by changing the contents of the boxes after you choose), you should pick both boxes. (An alternative resolution is to accept determinism, in which case the question of which box you should choose is moot because you don't really get to choose. This acceptance has more force if you can convincingly argue that it's impossible to predict events with 100% accuracy in a non-deterministic universe.) From a sitting position, I can touch most of my foot to my head pretty easily. quote:I'm pretty sure some companies have actually done that (not literally with the melting-into-ooze part, but with non-reusable CDs). The trouble is that this makes reinstallation really obnoxious if it becomes necessary (eg. due to a HD crash or getting a new computer). EDIT: DL, most companies actually will send you replacement disks if you send in proof of purchase. They'll only reliably do so for a couple of years after release, though. One would have to say that even being a sellable trowel is bad enough. Having seen the quality of some garden implements that have changed hands at local garage sales, being an unsellable one adds considerable insult to injury. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Newcomb's Paradox is a stronger version of the one in Walter's post above, in which the predictor is always right. (The weak version as Walter posted it isn't very interesting, because once you assume the predictor is capable of error there's no longer a contradiction between its ability to predict and your ability to make a choice, and taking one box is the obvious solution.) The situation as described is impossible, which is what makes it a paradox; the trick is to figure out which part of the situation you want to declare impossible. This depends on your opinions about causality and determinism, and also on what degree of logical chicanery you're willing to have any truck with. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! I'd hardly call the UK a real multi-party system; one party always ends up with a majority in Parliament, and that party's always either Labour or the Conservatives. Australia has essentially the same parliamentary system as the UK, and only manages to have politically influential minor parties because of a peculiar tradition of voting for different parties in the Senate than one does in the House of Representatives. We'll become even more of a two-party state if the current federal government follows through on its threat to defang the Senate. Don't mind TM; as you may have noticed, he's sometimes TM. He's really a very good person, he just isn't always very nice. quote:... would, of course, be asking two different questions; the former psychological, the latter historical. Is literary criticism a branch of psychology, of history, or both? (I'm not being facetious; it really does seem to me that literary critics aren't the people best placed to answer these questions. To a historian in particular, the actual content of a text is pretty much irrelevant in analysing how it's used.) Three main reasons. Firstly, Jeff's games have kind of a small audience. Secondly, Jeff has said that he doesn't really approve of fanfiction. Thirdly, Blades of Exile and Blades of Avernum sort of make fanfiction unnecessary. There is some Exile fanfiction in existence (Tharma wrote some, although I'm not sure if any of it's still online now), but not much. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! I've seen other games which had autocombat with configurable tactics. Autocombat is never very smart, though; in fact, if it were, it'd kind of defeat the purpose of combat being there at all. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Through a careful reading of the topic title and the content of the discussion, you may notice that this topic is about solo parties -- that is, a party consisting of just one Celt or Roman, rather than four. This makes matters rather more difficult. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |
