Yes, Averum 1-3 and Blades of Avernum are remakes of Exile 1-3 and Blades of Exile. The plots of the Exile and Avernum trilogy are the same, but as I understand it, the Avernum trilogy has a few more side-quests. The main difference between the two trilogies is the interface, though I'm sure people will post after me discussing the merits of Exile's greater number of spells, Avernum's isometric graphics, etc., etc., etc.

EDIT: Or posting before me discussing the merits of each...

On the other hand, Avernum 4 is completely new, not a rewrite. It uses the Geneforge engine, but is party-based instead of solo based.

If you don't have a text editor that keeps track of parentheses, get one. I recommend Programmer's Notepad, but it's far from the only one out there.

Argh. Doesn't seem like Notepad wants to put in line breaks. Care to tell me where line 407 is? Without knowing that, all I can recommend is checking the spelling of your calls (I had the toughest time figuring out why get_buffer_str() didn't work a while ago).

No Harm Done: The Question of Morality in General
Guardian

Heh. Wait a day and everyone beats you to the post. This is a quickie, sorry if I'm less than lucid.
quote:
I had been attending CCD solely for the sake of achieving Holy Confirmation and therefore receiving presents from proud relatives.
Presents? When I did Profession (something almost but not completely unlike the RCC's Confirmation) all I got was some lousy theology books. :P

Paragraph 6: You're still saying (or at least implying) that swearing is permissible because everyone does it. Probably better to say something along the line that it's the idea behind the word that matters, and since constant repetition has caused the word to lose its insulting/racial/whatever meaning, it is permissible to utter it. Not something I completely agree with, but it expounds on what you have.

Pedophilia and Consent: Another thing I think you're missing is the possiblility of doing harm to oneself. I don't know what the age of consent in the States is, but in Canada it's 14. There's been a number of cases where girls over 14 move in with their 'boyfriends' against their parents' will. It's impossible for any legal action to take place, as both parties often consent, even in the cases where abuse is involved. More generally, there are thousands of abusive relationships out there, with both parties consenting. Is it still moral?

Even ignoring the subjective nature of harm, I find your morality of 'do anything except harmful things' little different than the RCC's morality of 'do anything but this list of naugty things'. It tells you what not to do, but nothing else.

Works Cited: I'm not familiar with footnote MLA, but as far as I know, this is the format for "Online: Electronic Text on the Web - MLA"

<Author>. <Title of Article>. Trans. <Translator>. <Title of Site/Database>. <Editor>. <Date Article Created>. <Institution owning Site>. <Date Accessed> <http://sitename.com/article.html>.

Use hanging indents (all lines but the first indented). Replace everything inside the angle brackets, keeping the puctuation (the exception being the hyperlink, which appears exactly as shown. The text I'm pulling this example from (Canadian MLA, as of 1999) wants underlining instead of italics. Don't underline the period. I think it is permissible to use italics or quotations, though. You can omit bits that don't apply (like Trans. <Translator>). Don't believe me, though, check exactly how the mag wants it to be.

I seem to remember a topic like this before.

Dintiradan is decidedly unique, having all results pertaining to me. The PDN I use on some other boards is decidedly non-unique (un-unique? a-unique? anti-unique?), being a horrible pun, and none of the results pertain to me.

I used to use Editpad, but I've switched over to Programmer's Notepad 2 for everything code related, and I'm not going back. In my opinion, it's the next best thing after an AvernumScript IDE. Once they release the documentation for making schemes on the site, I'll make one for AvernumScript.

Spire Meenas Chest Trap in The Avernum Trilogy
Guardian

If I recall correctly, there is a secret passage on the north side of town that will get you to the chest, with traps I think. You don't need to confront Meena (though I did; by that time I was at a high enought level to wipe out all of Spire).

EDIT: Nevermind, misread. If you can't leave by the secret passage, then you do have to fight your way out.

I was just being on the cautious side. I read the first two Shannara series around ten years ago, and it never really clicked for me until much later. Try as I might, I can't remember the flashlight.

I'm the wrong person to ask about whether or not to buy it; I don't buy any books until they appear at a used bookstore near my house for a dollar. There's nothing spectacular about Armageddon's Children: no airships or amazing artefacts as in Shannara, and the dark philosophical moments aren't as good as in the Knight of the Word trilogy.

It's definitely more a Knight of the Word book than a Shannara one (except for a few chapters; for a hint, look at the bloody cover). Some characters from Angelfire East make an appearance.

Anyway, this is probably the last Brooks series I'm reading. He's definitely exhasted the setting, but on the other hand, this will be the series which ties nearly all his works together. (Any bets whether Landover will make an appearance?)

--------------------
And now for something completely different:
Was anyone else surprised that the Stone of Tears, the mriswith, and the kitchen sink didn't appear in Phantom? Everything else did.

That's supposed to be a Carrion Crawler? But the tentacles are by the mouth. It's obviously more shrimp-like, and thus, more Mind Flayer-like.

Seriously though, any combinations of Tentacled/Green/Acidic/Dire/Giant with Grub/Worm would work.
