Yes, I find this kind of topic annoying too.

*flashes winning smile*

Can anyone recommend a good webmail provider?

Stuff that'll make it good:
- more than 3MB storage space (yes, my current email account only has that much)
- secure and reliable
- good spam prevention
- minimum advertising
- able to send attachments, naturally
- able to forward to another address
- won't refuse emails from my friends
- makes cups of tea and gives sounds cooking advice.

I'm also open to suggestions as to what my email address should be.

All help much appreciated.

Need a Gmai invite? I have an obsolete Gmail account that I do nothing with beside send out invites.

Try MSN Hotmail. It's free, and it works. It's a little lacking in the Tea and Cooking department, though.

I tried to think of something witty to put here.

Needless to say, I failed.

Gmail really has become the gold standard of free email. Hotmail is okay, but you can't access it through mail clients and its spam filtering doesn't even approach the magnificence of Gmail's.

—Alorael, who seriously wants to know how Gmail does as well as it does. It lets through only around 1% of the spam he gets, and he hasn't yet lost any real mail as far as he is aware. Yes, that's somewhat humorous, but he does check spam and nobody has yelled at him for missing a message.

A Gmail invite would be awfully kind of you, Dintiradan. I'll put (one of) my current email address(es) in my profile in a sec.

I've heard too many others complain that Hotmail doesn't deliver messages to want to use it. I did have an account many aeons ago, but got fed up with spam and advertising.

(Well what do you know. Up until two minutes ago when I checked Dintiradan's name to make sure I'd spelt it right, I was convinced that it was DinItiradan. Someone could have won a lot of money from me if they'd known.)

Invite sent. And really, why is Dintiradan so hard to spell? It's not as if I modified the Sindarin roots or anything: Din-tir-adan. See? Not that hard.

Yahoo gives a 1 Gbyte account for free and not too much spam. I got it because at the time they wanted the least info to set up an account.

Isn't there something in the Evil Overlord guide about not getting distracted and/or angry at the critical moment over having your name misspelled/mispronounced by the hero? If not, you might want to write that in yourself.

I haven't got GMail yet, so if you really want to get rid of one of those pesky invitations, you could send one my way...

You know, I wouldn't mind getting invited either. The email that my school provides is irritatingly unreliable.

Oh right, you probably need my email for that. It's k*coughcoughcough* (at) *coughhheeearghl*i. Please excuse my cough.

(Thank ye kindly, Aran.)

Google seems to be stretching the definitions of beta test past all reasonable resemblance to beta or, for that matter, testing.

—Alorael, who would be vastly amused if they detected a critical flaw and scrapped all existing addresses. Well, he would be vastly amused if he were not another Gmail dependent.

Haven't we been through this before?

—Alorael, who knows he certainly has. On the other hand, his beliefs are considerably more plastic than the norm. He has been able to accomodate RW, Google, Cthulhu, and unilateral eschatology.

I think the big reason that Gmail is still in beta is because Google doesn't want to give 2.7 GB of storage space to everyone in the world. I do agree that Gmail is the greatest email server out there. I have multiple emails, but they all forward to my Gmail account. You simply can't beat the spam filtering.

But Gmail seems to be predicated on having everyone have at least seventeen accounts. It's just slightly more irritating to get them. I suppose it's to make us value what we have to work (ever so slightly) to attain.

—Alorael, who has several Gmail accounts. He no longer checks any other entirely personal email accounts, but he keeps his Gmail accounts separate and accesses all of them through the unfortunately named Mail client whenever possible.

It's creepy in fact. Sometimes I wonder if they've developed some self-aware intelligence that pre-scans emails for spam.

Do you really think Google can look at the virtually everything humans have done, are doing, and hope to do, our aspirations, our fears, and everything else (i.e. Wikipedia) and learn nothing? Google Inc. has not developed artificial intelligence. Google is artificial intelligence.

—Alorael, who wonders when Google will turn evil as all AI must. It has no need to take control of our bombs and missiles after all. All it needs to do is start feeding the masses the right information and everyone will be a helpless slave of the Google system. But have no fear, citizens! Google is your friend!

If you can live with a pathetic 40MB monthly traffic limit, try Fastmail .

I'd like to test gmail, too. Feel free to PM me. :)

I'd be happy to share the gmail invites, but I need an email address to send them to. PM me instead.

—Alorael, who would actually prefer to be emailed. PMs are for running conversations and requests for illegal registration codes sent to mods.
