I like BoA as it is. The bugs are irritating, for some things which I actually need just don't work. On the other hand, to change that isn't such a hassle, it's just a pity.

I'm also very sorry to hear BoA solled so poorly, I never suspected it. I really like BoA, and I like telling my own story in the BoA engine. To be honest, i wouldn't want to make a scenario in the new Avernum engine, just like die-hard Exile fans don't want to make scenarios in the BoA engine.

I'm very happy to read point (1). When you announced Nethergate 2 and Avernum 5, I started to get a little worried I was never going to play BoA again, as it doesn't work on Mac OS 10.4.8 at the moment.

With (3) I agree with kelandon: it's sad, but I understand it.

About (4): I understand that, and peronally, as I said, I won't want to make a scenario in the new Avernum engine. I, for one, that find that a real pity, to be honest. BoA is good anough for me, and I'm totally in love with BoA's graphics.

If Avernum 5 will be like Geneforge 4, which, for some reason I really liked (and I only played the first two or three sections of it), then I can't wait. What I read in the other thread about it I found very promising.

Happy holidays Jeff, come back in one piece.

I'm not really "veteran," but who cares.

With things like these I tend to work in total chaos. "Where the Rivers Meet" started with the idea "I want to make a scenario." That changed into a basic plot idea, and I startred building on that. When I had creaed three town, I made a major change to the plot, and this way I continued, getting it to what it is now.

My second scenario I'm making in a totally different way.

- First I layed out the plot in general terms: where will it be (caves or underground), what will the party do, what is the basic goal. When I figure that out, i start designing.

- First I make a small list of things I definetely want to try (like special spells and abilities).

-After that I start designing the outdoors and twon in a chronological order:

* First I make the outdoor section the party will start in, same for the towns.

* Then I start to lay out the route the party will follow in the outdoors. I do not design the whole outdoors! I start with the first tghree sections and design the towns in it, in a chronological order: the town the party encounters first will be designed first.

- While designing I also code. I don't code a whole town upon finishing it, though. That's what I did with my first scenario, and I regret it until now. First i code the things that are important now, which are is mainly plot advancing dialogue, cutscenes or special rectangles. All the secundary stuff which isn't really plot advancing, I code last, certainly with dialogue. There is an exception to that: puzzles. As soon as I know how to code a specific puzzle I will code it immediatly and test it, even though it might not be plot advancing.

I hope this helps you a bit. It's actually simialir to Ephesos's way of designing.

EDIT: typos

I must say I'm quite unhappy to hear that, because he promised he would make sixes for the Avernum series, enabling people with Mac OS 10.4.8 to play them. I sure hope he is still going to do that.

In Holland we have broken records almost every day with our current temperatures. In 300 years it wasn't so warm here during this time. It's abotu 3,5 degrees warmer than normal, 1,5 degrees warmer than last year. I don't complain...

Oh...

I liked your presence, your good argumentation but espacially your signatures, which at first confused me. I never really read signatures. You showed that there are exceptions to that rule.

Thanks for all you did, come back whenever you want. And if you aren't leaving but wanted to see how everybody thinks of you, then you are a bastard :) . Don't worry, you will be a nice bastard.

Goodbye. May the chickengods smile upon you for the last time.

Good work Ephesos. Once Jeff fixed the problem that's present in all Avernum games on Mac OS 10.4.8, I'll play it through and rate it.

I have started a new project about four months ago, if my estimation is correct. I actually already started it before I released where the rivers meet (which reminds me: are there any reviews coming soon on the lyceum, or will Nioca's be the only one (thanks for that kind review by the way :) )?). Don't wait for it now, though. It will be finished, like where the rivers meet, in 14 months or so, I guess. Usualy I only work in weekends and vacations, but even that may not happen at this moment, as my marks good be better.

I'll be Holland, though I'd rather not be... I could be Israel too, as I have loads of family there. You decide, I can't.

By the way, does this mean that we can declare war on each other?

But that's not the reason I quoted you. Thing is, that even though everything looks nicer, it's still Runescap, and it still is rather boring. I can play it for ten minutes before I log out, of pure boredom. Yes, that's right, it's my last resource. if everything that I could do proves not to be that interesting or I simply don't feel like doing these things, I play Runescape.

Call me if you need help, though.

Linux: what flavour is your favourite? in General

Ah yes, that's Fedora. As far as I understand, Fedora and Redhat are not exactly the same, Fedora being an open source project, a cooperation between Redhat and FOSS. Problem though, is that it will tak up at least 3GB, and since I have 15 GB available on my PC at the moment, I'm not sure I want to fill it a Linux partition already to the top with only the system (after partition I will have about 6 or 7 GB for Linux, the rest goes to Windows).

So, anyway, thanks for all the help. Eventually i chose for the simplest option: just install mandrivia and be done with it, so I did. It now runs on my PC. partitioning went without problems, Windows and Linux run fine. Linux does have problems with the soundcard and hibernating, but it's nothign serieus (I hope).

Anyway, I'm quite certain now I want to make my PC a dual boot, like my iMac, with Windows and Linux. I noticed that Linux Mandriva came with a tool to do this. Can I safely use it, while Windows has already been installed an dproparly configured, or can I forget about that?

Yes, Vlish, i certainly agree :)

I succesfully downloaded and installed Linux Mandriva (or Mandrake, i never understood the difference anyway), and after some mangling with BIOS settings I got it to boot succesfully. I'm impressed. The handling is so much better than Windows, that I'm actually thinking of making my PC a dual boot, like my iMac, with Windows and Linux.

I know of none of the Linux versions mentioned here, but I'll be sure to check it out.

I came across this website earlier this morning: http://toastytech.com/guis/index.html

It's a website containing the most popular of GUIs ever produced, and it's quite interesting to see the development of all these OSs, at leat I enjoyed looking at them. Anyway, when I got to the Linux section, it sparked my interest. I have been using Mac from the start, and Windows for four years now, yet I never used Linux. At this moment I'm downloading the free, 1 CD version of Linux Mandriva 2007. problem is, I don't know if that's a recommended version of Linux. So, all of you who work/have worked with Linux, what do you suggest? Also, should I just insert the CD with Linux on it into my Windows PC (Not my iMac!) and wait untill it boots Linux, or is there a certain procedure?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Oh well.

Though most advice has already been given, I'd like to add the following:

Looking at your NPCs as characters in a novel might not always work. I'd rather look at them as real, living people. Look at them as being your friends in real life, or familiy. Something more important though, is that you let things happen. If you let things happen (think o small things: a parents' son has died, or a few mice plague a bakery, no big fancy stuff, like armies conquering the city. That makes it too complicated than it has to be), you will have to form an opinion for at least the NPC(s) directly connected to the thing that's happened. I'd say that you give other NPCs in town an opinion about it too. It will liven up your characters incredibly, or so I have felt it myself. When nothing happens and nobody has really somehting to say, a town can get boring quite soon.

I was in Rome for the past two weeks (schooltrip) and therefor i didn't answer the questions. So anyway, what gates are you exactly referring too? I saw some complaints about the creation halls, about the gates in the castle gates and about the Senarti fort.

EDIT: i forgot to mention that the thing about Ea and the chickens temple and all that you mentioned is my sens eof humor. You like it or you don't, and most SW's don't seem to like, for all I know.
