You say this after four pages of verbal war on whether the rules are the same to everybody? :)

A person can only be held responsible for their own posts, right?

To expand, Yes.

I've been hollered at by stareye once or twice, when I bent a rule or two. It seems easier to conform (to the extent that I am like anything else) than to furiously rebel against ... stuff.

Interestingly enough, I play ET on another web board. Not exactly him, but pretty close. It ends up being that most of the better read members find my message to be accurate, but none of them can publicly agree with my caustic remarks, lest they be smeared with the vitriol which follows my remarks. The administration does keep a close eye on me though, as the barely literate masses usually find a way to be offended by the truth, and the [report post] button is alive and well, but I have never been banned, warned, or disciplined because I stick within the ruleset of the forum and the mods/admins.

But over there it matters. It is about the survival of an actual living species, and the nancy-pants method of communicating has failed for thirty years. Here, it isn't even a game. It's just a bunch of well off folks arguing semantics and intent in some crpgs.

So, if you love these games you have three choices.
1) conform to the ruleset and posting style of this forum, asking advice on the same as needed,
2) rage against the machine,
3) form a subforum for geneforge fans and run it as you see fit, or
4) stop loving the games.

I think another issue here is that few people actually do bother with intentionally belittling/harassing, etc. Mostly it is sarcasm, however effectively written. What bugs me the most about you ET, is that you throw yourself in the middle of a discussion already anticipating getting hit with comments that you perceive as negative. It isn't exactly a self fulfilling prophecy, but you shouldn't be too surprised to find yourself pilloried when you jump in the middle of things. Like mentioned, it isn't your contributions (however philosophically misguided) to the games threads that put you at odds with the moderators, it is your insistence at being some sort of union leader for the under represented newbie. It's not your role, and never has been, especially in the public eye. If you want to lobby for something, there are effective ways of doing so. Calling the admins to task is not on that list.

So you are now agreeing with my earlier assertion that people are judged by numbers here rather than content? You just said the opposite a few posts ago, why the flip-flop?

A for effort. D- for comprehension.

More posts = more content = more data from which to extract valid judgments. So, where is the flip?

Generate enough presence and the dye gets diluted away.
I can think of several members who made simply horrible first impressions, but that evaporated quickly when certain factors became known. Others made decent first impressions, and eventually soured their reputation. It is as much a function of individual as community, and is unlikely to change without a vastly different rule-set.

The reality is though, that you (ET) seem determined to change the type of community present here. I don't really know why, perhaps because the bar for entry is so low? But, that isn't going to happen. You aren't the force of personality that you may think, and the collective personality present is too much for any one person to re-direct. I doubt though that it would be satisfying to find a community which matches your desires, as then you would merely be a fish in the sea, rather than a community personality. Albeit, that personality is the crazy guy that wanders around in his boxers and bathrobe walking his cat on a leash while mumbling about non-existent political machinations and cabals.

If you like, we could start taunting people like Alec or Scorp. Is that what you would like to see for parity? I mean, we already taunt Drakefyre, *i (well, you do), Alorael, and the rest of them. The only difference I see is that they are smart enough to not over react.

They spoke in an article in a niche magazine. The link is to a more mainstream source. I do not believe that they submitted the article to the mainstream source. But, I could be wrong. Mainstream picked it up, imo, because it is sensationalism and sells [advertising space].

Well yeah, but it is only controversial once we start expressing those diverse opinions. The content of the story isn't new. It's been done before. The content is legal, and is supposedly a private function between two people. It has nothing to do with SW, or it's games, or the people that play those games. It seems to solely be posted here because it was a slow news day for Excalibur and he felt compelled to post something.
I felt it was a poor choice because it offered nothing to this board, except perhaps some angry posts and feelings of later regret. In my opinion, people wishing to help the acceptance of this type of activity do so by not making a big deal out of it. They treat it as the natural occurrence that they believe it to be. It is only those who wish to discredit the practice that propagandize it.
So yeah. As much as it doesn't belong here, it is also tabloid journalism and belongs nowhere.

Actually Aran, Ratt is spot on. Diki specifically requested that this thread not be cluttered with inanities. Despite only two chapters being released, this topic has grown to almost 150 replies. I assure you that most of them could exist in a different thread, as they are completely unrelated.

Next time I'll try to be more specific.

On the drive home, I asked my parents if it had snowed in Portland. "Probably not," they said, as we took the boulevard to our house. But it had, and it continued to snow and hail sporadically the rest of spring break. We used to hit the 70s in spring break! *snif*

We still have snow on the ground, despite the 60 degree weather today. First day in 5 that it didn't snow/hail/sleet though. Sorry about your spring break, I saw pics on the news showing the coast. How was the highway over the coast range?
